I am from Libya, and we have an infrastructure that is perhaps the worst in North Africa. It has collapsed for decades, since the days of Gaddafi. There is no maintenance of dams, especially the Derna Dam. There was a recommendation from a Swiss company that evaluated The condition of the dam in 2002, and a report was submitted that it was vulnerable to collapsing at any time, and the government did nothing. Likewise, the 2021 budget was allocated to repair and strengthen the dam, but it was not implemented for unknown reasons. This applies to the entire country. We in Tripoli suffer from pools of water if it rains for half an hour for this matter. It could have been overcome with very few casualties if we were in a respectable country

Oh how awful. I'm so sorry. These dams are ticking time bombs if they aren't maintained properly, and honestly I can't imagine that anything of the kind was foremost on the people's minds who are in charge. People in my own country don't think about what the government is supposed to do for people. They love to talk about cutting services and getting rid of parts of the government. It's the mundane things, the day to day things that are so important and since they are working, they are almost invisible. Even if they're not working well, they are still working in some way, so no one thinks of it. I read where a hydraulic engineer (Dr. Abdelwanees Ashoor from Omar Al-Mukhtar University) had recently published a paper about these very dams and said if something wasn't done, there would be death and destruction on an unimaginable scale. He was in the New York Times today and said he lost members of his own family. Knowing it was very likely to happen and nothing was done has to be absolutely devastating. My heart goes out to your entire country. I myself live downstream to a large dam and recently there were some concerns about it now that the weather is becoming more extreme. My area has always been flood prone, and we just had floods where you could see refrigerators and sheds floating down the streets. Obviously, nothing to compare at all with what you have been through, just that I know even a small flood in comparison can be life altering. Political instability just adds to the danger that any country faces. While this may be naive, I can only hope that out of this enormous loss your situation will change for the better. The average citizen suffers and it's not fair. My thoughts are with your people.

@@googlyeyedcat Nope. God NEVER promised to never send another flood. God promised to never send another flood that would destroy ALL the Earth. If you want to quote God then at least get it right. However, Jesus also taught us to be careful how we judge others who are killed in catastrophes. In one situation his disciples asked Jesus if a recent catastrophe that had killed dozens of people when a wall fell on top of them some years earlier was perhaps a judgement of God. His response was: ""Verily I tell you all, that unless all of you repent of your sins and be saved you shall all die as those men died that day."" Jesus was of course talking about the spiritual death in hell, cut off from God, that comes to every one of us if we are not REBORN as spiritual children to God's loving kingdom of Heaven. The same could be said to every nation of the dear victims at Derna, Libya or any other catastrophe anywhere around the globe. REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS PRESENT. GOD IS WAITING TO LOVE AND HEAL US ALL FROM OUR SINS SO THAT WE CAN BECOME HIS FRIENDS AND SONS AND DAUGHTERS TO INHERIT HIS GLORY FOREVER.

@jenniferloftus2363
@jenniferloftus2363 11 месяцев назад
Sadly, your suspicions are correct. There was just an engineer who wrote a paper that explained how the dams were not being maintained properly and that if they failed, they would cause catastrophic destruction and death. The engineer said the dams, which were finished in the 1970s, weren't built with the desertification that's happened in mind. They weren't maintained well either. Right now there aren't many things we'd consider "government services" over there. They have a divided gov't with each of the two governments saying they are the right one, and fighting with each other to establish themselves as the one real gov't. They aren't expending money on things like dam maintenance or the welfare of the people, so there wasn't any kind of warning system or coherent messaging about whether to flee or stay. Very sad.

So Libya has become two failed states that are unable to handle the water input/output of a dam, resulting in a devastating apocalyptic situation. I wonder what has caused them to be so inadequate after being self-sufficient? Man-induced climate change is a factor, but Egypt received the same amount of rain. The greed of unevolved men for dominance and to exploit others is also a factor in this.

@@keithallen5795That's what matters. The very sustainable thing is destruction, simply because construction is going against the natural order. If you construct a structure that can withstand gravity, it will eventually collapse. As the solution, you resort to maintenance (fighting natural order). The destruction of human legacies by fellow humans can be even more devastating because the natural order is still present, leading to catastrophes of such magnitudes.

Maybe that is the only thing that will bring them together. While it is absolutely awful, the only "good" (if you can call it that) outcome here would be for the whole country to be brought together and the government starts working for the people. It really brings to the front how important government is, and how the day to day things it does make huge differences in people's lives. Dams, roads, bridges, pipes, airports, mail services, all of those things are the backbone of any country and they don't matter until they don't work. We should learn a lesson in the US from this, which is that we need effective government to protect the people and allow us to live our lives normally. We should be thankful for what we have, and also thankful that we are finally starting to take care of the infrastructure here after decades of ignoring it. With the weather becoming more extreme all the time, we need to be vigilant about our systems and plans. And also, we should all make sure that if we can help the people in Libya that we do so. Find effective charities and send money if possible.

First, the earthquake in Morocco and a few days later, this horrible catastrophe in Libya, and so many other disasters that have occurred around in the world in this year alone. Our hearts are broken for all of the lives and the families and communities lost, for all the non-human animals lost, for all the pain and trauma that are left behind. In moments like these, we are all united in our pain, we are all one and we wish both Morocco and Libya strength in rebuilding and growing stronger once again. He lost some of his family this week. A Libyan from Tripoli up futher in the comments said a Swedish firm in 2002 checked out the dam and there were recommendations to fix it, and there was even money allocated in the budget but was never used for that purpose. Of course they have meteorologists. They also have hydraulic engineers like Dr. Ashoor who wrote a paper describing what could happen since the dams weren't being maintained but he wasn't listened to by the government. I don't know if we can say most people there don't listen to the weather, although what we can say is that having warring factions in two parts of the country, each vying to be the only government, has led to a breakdown of services for the people. There was no warning system in place even though they were right there near two large dams that weren't built with this type of desertification in mind, nor the pounding rains that happen as a matter of course all the time there. I don't know that they are allocating money to weather services like planes or satellites, since they are really in the middle of a kind of civil war.

Yes, we have meteorologists. This is self-evident, just like any country in the world. Did you think that Libya, a country on Mars, for example, does not have meteorologists? Rather, we do have meteorologists. Otherwise, how is air traffic managed in the country? All that matters is that the population was warned beforehand. The accident happened and they told them that there was a disaster coming, but the residents ignored the warning, so what happened happened and thousands of souls ascended to their Lord

@@MrDXRamirez Cars have nothing to do with it. The sun is getting very slowly warmer. As it usually does in cycles of many centuries. Cooler and cooler then warmer and warmer and so on Back and Forth. The climate change is real but it is not nearly as bad as the hysterical elitist media is making it to be. The Earth WAS even warmer back in the Viking Age than it is now. After that it got cooler and cooler until about 1900 when it very slowly started warming up again. Don't be a silly lemming, enslaved to the trillionaire parasites' media propaganda tricks.

Google Earth has imagery from 2023-09-12. Much of the danmage is clearly visible. It appears that the majority of it is because a city has been built up on a river delta. the main channel southwest of the city has been cut at least 80 to 150 meters into the ground, showing, that in the past, significant water flow has shaped the terrain. Areas other than the main channelhave also been flooded. This has happened before and it will happen agian. These events are to be expected.

Condolences to the affected families, but Libyans should pray for forgiveness for killing their Leader by the help of France and NATO, as a Muslim country they even didn't give Kadafi a respected or proper burial, instead of that they kept his body and made fun of his dead body, the Gods are angry and it was Eastern part Libya that did this horrible act to Kadafi, these are the consequences, go and give him a proper burial and these wars and natural disasters will no longer occur. My suggestion or advice.

TEARS FOR THE MISSING 2023 !! Tears are the raindrops of the soul And there's one for all who die. They are the silent words of grief As they fall free from the eye. The shortest verse in the Bible Is the one where Jesus wept So, if you hold back tears, shed them When your pain is too harsh to accept. Tears are lovelier than a smile When they come from those you love As they seek relief from sadness When you're summoned from above. Tears are a love-mates humble gift When it's time to say goodbye Though the eyes are wet and swollen With time and patience they dry. By Tom Zart Most Published Poet On The Web !

When Muammar Khadaffi was one of the world's biggest troublemakers, we left him alone for over 20 years. Then he unilaterally gave up his country's nuclear weapons development program, and we went after him, chased him out, had him killed, and left this country rudderless which it has been for the last 15 years. This is one of Madame Clinton's and Pres Obama's crowning achievements. As always, the little people scontinue to suffer

We will all die one day, we do not know how or when but that day is coming. What you do now will determine where you go once you die, it is all that matters. There is a heaven, "For where will the righteous go?" and there is a hell below, "For will evil be and will it ever cease?" (1 Peter 4:18). "But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the Lord, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!" (Joshua 24:15).
