Hi, I'm Uyen Ninh but please just call me Uyen!
I moved from Vietnam to Germany 3 years ago for studying. I make silly videos about how Germany looks like through the eyes of a Vietnamese student - on my way to be your favourite Ausländer! :D

Learning another language is tricky enough when it has the same basics as your own but going from Vietnamese to German.... I am in awe of you.

Thanks to the internet i learned English and because i learned English it's easier for me to learn German (same language group). And scince my native language is Ukrainian I'm familiar with genders and cases (nom, akk...). So I'm very lucky. Can't imagine how hard this new language system is for native English speakers (why should table have a gender, right? 😂) and for Vietnamese i bet it's also really hard (I'm not familiar with this language, would be nice to know if it has any similarities with the ones i know)

@@idontreallylikelongnames As an English speaker, I'm familiar with gendered nouns from languages more commonly taught in the US (Spanish, French, Italian, etc). That part doesn't confuse me. Although remembering which ones are which... is another story. In Spanish at least nouns often have a or o at the end which signals gender. Your English is perfect by the way! Impressive learning it from the internet, but I suppose it must be something of a necessity because of how ubiquitous it is.

It was hilarious to see how you mentioned many points and made them funny :) good job! One point was when my husband and I used to start a conversation in Deutsch and at the beginning I was so proud of myself and 2 minutes later, I was just literally leaving the room, when he started to continue the conversation in Deutsch :D

Your bit in the bread shop is exactly how I was in a bakery in a German speaking swiss one. I started off trying to communicate in German, she replied in English, then she thought, ok she wants to dialogue in German, so she switched & I then couldn’t understand! 😂😂 . I gave up & asked her to repeat that in English please. Swiss German is even more confusing than regular German too!

In Berlin I think they wouldn't say "Viertel drei". That's more of a southern German thing. The rest of Germany says "Viertel nach drei" und "Viertel vor drei". Which should also be understood everywhere.

Hattest du schon mal Individualunterricht in Präsenz?

Ah man, the name bit reminded me of my cousin and his wife. She's from India and Urdu is her native language. During a holiday with a bunch of the family there, they were discussing (good-naturedly) how they constantly mispronounced each others' names, resulting in one of them -- I don't remember who -- asking "wait, what's your name again?" lmao

had english in school for 7 years, read literature like "brave new world" and other classic books, only learning thze necessary vocabulary used in the chapter, never learned to talk in it or write freely. this all came about 20 years after school while reading newspaper and books (Thank you so much, Terry Pratchett!!) and listening to youtube clips of viva la dirt league. Now i think i'm pretty fluent (reading it), but i need about 5 to 10 minutes to adjust to the speaker to propperly understand them. not to mention: fo i learned english through reading, my pronounciation is HORRIBLE!!!! Kansas - AR-Kansas instead of Kansas - Arkinsaw etc

I'm learning Norwegian, which has a few words similar to German, but also a ton different. I'm used to three thirty is 'half past three', but in Norwegian (like in German) it's 'halv fire' aka 'half four'. It's hard to remember! There's also many words that sound similar to English, but many that are super different too. My mom was learning too and I think she was surprised when it started being less analogous because most of our early lessons sounded nearly like English. Also those sounds that aren't in your native language are really difficult! I'm doing ok with the Norwegian 'R' but I'm certain I'm doing the sound at the end of 'takk' or 'melk' wrong. I'm making the English 'ch' sound, but I don't think that's right, but I don't have anyone to speak to so it's the closest I'm going to get for now.

Actually, the German way of doing number order works in English, too (British and American). It's just very, old fashioned. We also have mpolite/impolite forms of address just like German-"you/you/yours" is polite and "thou, thee, thy/thine" is the impolite, which nobody uses...because it sounds old-fashioned, unless you're from Yorkshire.

I love how the German basically uses complete sentences to describe the purpose of something rather than just give it a simple, one word name yet can come up with a single, simple word for describing various complex human emotions, ewig being without an English equivalent.
