I love the arrangement and how the instruments enter little by little after each cycle, especially how the guitar and accordion enter on the second one ("teen mie ilon itsekseni")

Judging by the soviet medals some of the footage might be in Russian Karelia, or perhaps a music event in Vibourg/Vippori - a former Finnish, now Russian town near the F-R border?

@Drbaconboy Minna Rautiainen. The vid is quite probably from 1990 in Sortavala/Russia - she left the band a couple of years later as she didn't want to consider singing as a career. Actually she still occasionally followed the band - taking care of the children of the other band members during the gigs/rehearsals and such. I think she had a genuine "rural" sound in her voice that suited perfectly to their material in that era.

Да вы правы это скорее всего снято в Сортавала. Я бываю там иногда. Правда город конечно с того времени изменился. Но это да похоже только на него. Насчет Минны Раутаинен да Вы совершенно правы ее голос стилистически очень подходящий под старинную этническую музыку те произведения того времени что были в ансамбле.

@laelamarie1 They had a percussionist, Christer Hackman in their line up at this time - one of his listed specialties was indeed darbuka/tabla. So you must be right - this is of course not by any means a trad Finnish instrument, but depending on the level of purism neither is any other instrument here ;) Alexandria - of course - and now the lighthouse depicted there also makes sense, thanks.

@EneriGiilaan Thank you 4 all of the info. Now I can have fun going back over all of those videos & try to keep track of who's who. And I could seriously become more knowledgable about the history of the band. I clicked your channel, & came across the beautiful & haunting "Travuska" which I have never heard of B4. I must check out your other vids. I must thank pidzej78 too, 4 posting this one. I love Varttina! I musn't 4get the great musicianship of the band, too.

@fredericfranc AFAIK Bartok studied and used much of trad music from areas in and near Hungary in his own compositions? I guess that would mean 'Non-West-European' constructs, harmonies etc. Finnish music, especially the part based on Karelian tradition, is also NWE and melts with traditions further East and S-E. So for all I know there might indeed be much in common here.

@khundar Well, by the title the song is about supine people, and "latunenä" (or ladun nenä correctly) then the most certainly represents some kind of leader in this context) . latu = the path for cross-country skiing, and one has to make it so he is the nose of that path... I guess one has to go ski outside of public paths in a group to really understand this. There are many proverbs about this.
@TK8866275
@TK8866275 14 лет назад
@Skaldmatte . It means snotnosed small child, toddlers who are crawling on all fours on the floor (lattia). If you think two nostrils running mucus it is quite obvious resemblance of ski track. XD

@fredericfranc As a Trinidadian linguistic ... :D But seriously - I have read that while Hungarian and Finnish are both Fenno-Ugric languages they are actually quite removed - about as close as English is to Hindi in the Indo-European side. The perceptible similarity raises only because you have the vast sea of engulfing I-E languages to compare against - and they are both clearly distinct from those.

@Eneri Giilaan At first I was going to ask, "Why would you think it's not Riitta when we don't ever get a decent look at her face?" But after comparing pictures of both, I think you're correct. It's odd, because there is quite a resemblance between the two in the nose (there's a YT video from years later of the two of them & third accordionist playing together, and when you see Maria & Riitta side by side, they could be sisters). But the shape of the face in the long shot at 1:13 definitely resembles Maria more than Riitta. I never would have noticed that if you hadn't mentioned it, I just assumed it was Riitta because she was in so long & Maria was in so briefly.

@IhanaPuhuaSuomi I'm not a linguistic nor phoneticist - but anyways ;) The sound in English "goo" matches Finnish long vowel "uu". I guess there is no English equivalent to Finnish "y" - it is close to German "ü" (über), Swedish "y" (ylle) or the "u" in French "une". Here are some Värttinä examples (put the codes in RU-vid search box): watch?v=rd0LeCE4xOg "syyllistä" at 0:48 watch?v=Erf26tDccio "tuulta" at 0:30 At first it might be hard for an English speaker to even hear any difference?

@Eneri_Giilaan Considering how well you seem to be versed in poetic Finnish, can you possible tell me what this song is about? It seems to go all around the place: "En ole opissa ollu" I think translates as "I was not aware / I did not know" but for all I know this is more likely to be dialectical Finnish with Karelian influences. Another thing that puzzles me is the use of the phrase "Mie alota, ja lopeta" without any conjugation whatsoever. What is the way to go about translating that?
@chuckletense
@chuckletense 9 лет назад
Nicholas Lee i know you posted this question a long time ago but if you never got a reply and are still interested, the song is about how everyone is silent and the singer decides to be the one to amuse herself since everyone else seems to be mute and unable to sing, and she is doing this despite being poor and uneducated 'Mie oon vaan varaton tyttö, ja varaton en ole opissa ollut, ja opissa' and 'kun en aina mie alota, ja alota, mie alota mie lopeta, mie lopeta' can either mean that no one is singing or making joy if the singer isnt the one to start or end it or it can also mean that the singer isn't always the one to be there to start it and end it. *en ole opissa ollu* literally means that she hasn't been schooled. Hope this helps :)
@nicholaslee7792
@nicholaslee7792 9 лет назад
Haha trust me, it has definitely helped. A lot of these Karelian songs are incomprehensible to one who has learned formal Finnish.

@@nicholaslee7792 i am finn and this and most of the finnish folk songs are not karelian but mixture of finnish dialects. There are influeces from eastern and western dialects. Even if the singers were from eastern finland they use many features from western dialects becouse western dialects have remained very old and have many poetry features more than other dialects.

This sounds to me like the most deep rooted music by Varttina that I have heard yet. Early Varttina? Isn't the young lady on the right, the one who is in seelonikoi, Oi dai, Aijo? years later? I can't speak Finnish, I have a friend over there. But I do have a musta koira.

I'm not a Finn, but "nenä" is nose and "latu" means (according to dictionary) ski track, path or track. I don't believe it's "pathnose" but it will be combination of these two words ;o) Find the metaphor for yourself, I don't get the meaning either xD

@LittleBigIdeasMedia Why on earth would they pronounce it "ai" or "uu"? As a Finn I can assure you that they pronounce "y" as "y", the way God meant it ;) Or if not exactly God, the very simple and straightforward rules of Finnish spelling: one sound - one letter, unambiguous match. Or if not exactly unambiguous, at least almost - there must always be an exception and there is also with Finnish, but only one (or two depending how you count) ;)
