In this tutorial you will learn how to setup and render a realistic interior lighting setup in V-Ray for 3dsMax. We will be going through the basic scene preparations and then create 2 differetn interior lighting setups: One using a V-Ray Sun & Sky System and then another setup that just relies on a single HDRI. We will explore the concepts of MIS (Multi Importance Sampling) and how we can use the new Adaptive Dome Feature of the Domelight to eliminate the use of Portal Lights in V-Ray. Additionally we will explore the new Chaos Cosmos Library and use it to populate our interior lighting scene. These techniques are great for Archviz or Architectual Visualisations with 3d Studio Max.
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 5 in this demo, but you can get similar results even with earlier versions of V-Ray. You would need V-Ray NEXT for the Adaptive Dome Feature at least though. If you use earlier V-Ray versions you can use the workaround using Portal Lights.

Another great video! I too, did not know about MIS, even thou I am familiar with this new way of lighting interiors with a dome light. Still, very informative and enjoyable to watch!
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 3 года назад
Yeah, it's also not really clearly documented in my opinion. I think the default now should be if you add a VRaySun that it creates a domelight with a VRaySky instead of asking to put it into the environment. The truth is for exterior scenes you might very well get away with it and wouldn't really notice a huge difference, but for interior shots if you light with the environment you will get catastrophic results :-)

Nice Tutorial as Usual, I would like to know please how did You hide the ceiling in just one view port and not in the view You are rendering from?
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 3 года назад
Hi, the ceiling is just a plane and then if you enable backface culling in the object properties you can look through from the other side in the viewport :)
@pixelquarry
@pixelquarry 3 года назад
Never heard nor known about MIS, thanks for the insights. How did you manage the exposure for the perspective view? When you moved around while not looking through the camera the exposure seems to be close to the EV9 of the camera.
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 3 года назад
In the Environment you can set the global exposure, this will set the exposure of your perspective view if you don't use a camera.

hello does vray 5.2 remove light advanced optinos from dome light? Do you use the same aproach for exterior as well? thank you
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 2 года назад
Hi, it seems some options were removed in 5.2, that's correct. In general yes but for exteriors you can also get by without the domelight and just illuminate through the environment as there are not so many secondary bounces...

@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 2 года назад
Hi, you can just disable Auto Exposure and Whitebalance but set or animate them according to what you need directly in the camera itself

How come my Dome light don’t have advanced option on the bottom? I am using 5.2.2 Vray and 3ds 2022. And why not using Vray camera? For interior scene, no need to put Amb. Occlusion? Thanks for your tutorial 🙏🏻
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 2 года назад
- This was changed in Update 2, the advanced options are no longer accessible. - The V-Ray camera is in my opinion much more annoying to use as all parameters are connected. So if you change the shutterspeed it will change the exposure and motionblur and so on. But if you like to use it then go for it! - Technically with brute force GI and high enough sampling you wouldn't really need that. But there is the option in the GI settings to add that if you want to use it to add additional contrast.

@@JonasNoell but when I rendering the interior scene in 4K, the walls color and shadow seem not smooth like compressed image, what should I do to fix it? What color mapping do you use for interior scene? What is your best production render setting for interior scenes? Awesome tutorial 🙏🏻thx

Does this still work the same way with Vray 6? I mean does it still render faster using a dome light instead of the Environment Map to render VraySky? I've noticed in Vray 6 there are no "Advance options tab - Enable MIS" in the Dome light settings. Maybe the Environment Map also have "MIS" ability now, whatever that means? (Does any of this even matter when you have an interior scene with no windows / outside light coming in, only interior lights?)
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 4 месяца назад
Hi, I guess the MIS option is now always on for the domelight and hidden from the UI as there is no real reason to turn it off. Also lighting through the Environment Map still has the same problems (when lighting interiors with a lot of bounces) as demonstrated in the video. And if you don't have any windows in your room and only artificial light then all of this doesn't apply to you anyway :-) It mainly relates to situations where you have a very bright light source "pushed through" a smaller opening to illuminate the inside of something, as this requires smarter sampling and a lot more bounces. For exterior scenes that is usually not as problematic and in practice you wouldn't notice much of a difference in terms of quality and rendering speed.

@@JonasNoell Thanks, that makes sense. Will be using dome lights for partial exterior scenes from now on.

@L3nny666
@L3nny666 3 года назад
ich glaube dass adaptive dome light ist in vray next noch nicht so gut...
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 3 года назад
