FYI - this project ended some time in 2019 for 2 reasons: Firstly, I lost access to the shop I was working in. Second, the LS2 engine headers would not fit on the driver's side because of the very weird and antiquated steering box Mercedes uses. It's literally on the fender. In order to get the headers in, I would have had to offset the engine and that would cause further issues. I'm not a very good fabricator guys! My new project is my 2020 Supra. I'm adding some serious power to it shortly. Follow along!

Yeah, R170. R171 has rack and pinion steering, there is of course a factory V8 version of the R171.

You're doing it wrong. There are plenty of R170s with M113Ks.

Oh, and I'm sure you know already, but the LS2 in the GTO got a low mount alternator, but there is also a bracket available for the high mount version the Corvettes use. If space is tight in the low end of the engine bay, you've got bolt-on options!

Hi.. cool project. Im looking at a 2010 ml cdi 350 4matic. Do you have any idea if a simular engine could be dropped into the Ml. Ive seen brand new stroked engine for 13k and though if this could done it would be a pretty nice package without some of the horrors you hear of with mercedes powerplants. Cheers rich.

Ya .. slk. But lets not forget about the 190e with 5.5 amg v8 supercharged. And i have a clk im dropped an ls3 in. So this is great.

you could probably sell that manual transmission pretty easy. a lot of of older Mercedes engines fit that bell housing pattern. then you'll have the advantage of having a working computer and harness with the engine! I think your hardest part will be steering and driveshaft

Hi I have a 1966 200D Finnie and The original engine couldn't even push the car up a hill with more than on person in the car. I would love to get a v-8 put into my body. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

I've never worked on one of those. Do some research and see if someone has done a v8 swap before. If you do it, it will be 100% custom parts most likely. You'll need someone who can weld and fabricate what you need.

O.K. I'm interested. I have a 2013 Mercedes Sports, OM651 4 cylinder twin turbo diesel Coupe with six speed manual. l like the car and would rather keep it BUT, l would rather have an eight, a Chev 8, l have no faith in Benz engines and the expense in fixing them is bullshit. Will that LS1 engine fit, my gearbox is the best choice in my opinion, at least they got that part right, now they don't make manuals anymore.

RevMatchTV Good luck to you!! I have a 2001 slk 230 6speed stick shift. Headers, exhaust, intake, pulley kit, and ECU tune. It’s such a fun car. I truly can’t wait to see your progress. I am now a huge fan!!!

Was there a reason the project went dead? I just bought an SLK for an LS swap. Wondering what went wrong with this. I am experienced with fab work just wondering what went wrong

The steering rack is in a weird spot. It's in the way of the header on the driver side. It would have necessitated doing some cutting of the chassis or swapping out the rack entirely. The concerned from a drivability and safety aspect. Also, I lost the space I was working in. good luck!

You're going to need a really big shoe horn Eric! I don't expect the tunnel will have clearance, but there are plenty of ways around that. The headers might need some customizing. It will be interesting to say the least.

Awsome project!! Im working on a similar project , only difference is im working with a chrysler crossfire , which is basically an slk platform...... I just removed the stock engine and transmission from the crossfire .....one thing i have noticed is the outdated mercedes steering system....i want to convert my steering to a manual rack and pinion ..... Im currently researching that and seeing what is available..... You and i have the exact same steering setup.... Ill be happy to share whatever info i happen yo run across.....right now im thinking a manual mustang II rack and pinion should work....tie rod ends will be an obstacle to overcome..... Im thinking that mustang II tie rod ends will work as well , however the tapered hole in the steering knuckles may require a slight amount of reaming....they make special tapered reams for such work.....

I forgot to meantion the intended drive train for my project comes from a 2010 chevy express 3500.. Its a 6.0 L96 engine already mildy cammed and tuned along with a 6L90E transmission. The transmission tunnel is tall and pretty narrow ,so i dont know if the 6l90E automatic is going to willingly fit , but to my surprise the factory NAG1 transmission that came out of the crossfire is pretty beefy in comparison.....we shall see

Swapped the engine. It's got bad compression in 1 cylinder. The team is pretty much over it =(
