Vacation Rental "Phase Out" Bill Heard In Hawaii Senate (Mar. 19, 2024) 

I wholly agree with that exception, if you don't live on the island or are a corporation making profits from STR's you need to be phased out so local residents have homes. I'm a lava refugee on the big island from the 2018 eruptions. Over 2000 living spaces were taken by lava leaving many of us without safe, affordable housing. Literally overnight the rentals doubled in price and within a few years they've tripled, or more. Finding safe, affordable, pet friendly housing has become a literal nightmare and the lack thereof has forced many off the island, or into homelessness. The only reason I've been able to stay is by lowering my standard of living to extremely poor standards to keep a dry roof over my head and have a home for my pets. So I support this legislation, but there do need to be exceptions for local hawaiians and long term residents/seniors who own STR's as a way to earn income.

HI politicians are owned by the hotels who give $$. Mufi probably pushing this. That being the case - maybe the hotels should pay more taxes!!!!

This is literally to make hotels wealthier by making them the only option in the state for visitors tourists are always going to come thinking that people that own vacation homes on the island are going to all of a sudden rent to locals at a huge discount is delusional this simply creates scarcity of accommodations and pushes all tourism into the hotels making hotels wealthier and not creating any affordable housing most those in opposition are arguing from an emotional position rather than a logical one people that own multimillion dollar vacation homes are not going to all of a sudden rent to locals at a huge discount simply because they can’t Airbnb their places anymore they will just sit empty until those owners visit no one has made a clear argument as to how this fixes anything all it does is destroy a huge component of the local economy while making the hotel chains wealthier and more powerful this is so deeply flawed and if y’all can’t see this is simply hotel chains lobbying to create a monopoly then you deserve the negative impact it will have on locals watching native Hawaiians shot themselves in the foot while blindly supporting hotel chains is just sad this in no way will create affordable housing it will however make hotels the only game in town and make them extremely wealthy and will make more giant hotels viable to build to keep up with the new demand meaning more detrimental impact to nature as these huge resorts scar the land and don’t give back at all to locals

Housing shortage didn't just pop up when Lahaina was lit of fire - it's been a problem for a long time but now the govt has someone to blame besides themselves (like they ever take the responsibility). clown Green had to emphasize the blame game by calling it BULLSHIT. Str ban will not lower the cost of houses or condos. People from all over the world buy condos in Hawaii. Takes lots of $$$$ to buy there and people will keep their condos just rent to friends unofficially
