heres am amature tip (cause im not a pro lol) once you have it in the vacuform machine with the vaccume on, if you don't get some of the detail you want you can heat up the area you want to target with a heat gun to get more depth in the detail. alternatively you can use a desoldering station that has a very narrow output for the heating element that will allow you to target the area you want. have to be careful with the 3d print underneath, but with other heat resistant materials it works a charm. Cheers!

I love the simplicity of that vacuum forming machine. Very easy for anyone to build and meet most needs. I went whole hog back in the day and built a big daddy 2x4 ft former from the TK forums and its 500lb of steel and fire breathing glory that's too massive to use most of the time. The tip here is get as far as you can with simplicity and you'll have a heavier wallet and more shop space!

Those little holes you drilled won't work very well if they don't line up with the holes in your platten. You need a little bit of a hollow under your puck so your vacuum will distribute through those holes and suck your plastic down into those details.

@@punishedprops I also have one more question to you guys. I just watched your video on priming EVA foam for painting. Unfortunately - you only test the side without the texture on, which is very easy to paint. But how to prime the side of the mat with the texture on?? It has some nasty finish that I can't paint with anything I tried. Nothing seems to bond to it. I'm planning to repaint my 9-year-old N7 Armor soon but I can't seem to find a reliable technique (the last paint I used worked for a few months, but now after 9 years it's chipping off like crazy)... :( :( I know that you also have a similar N7 Armor so you had do solve the exact same problem somehow.

@@punishedprops I''m definantly planing to get one and build a steam/diesel punk theamed hybrid solar/kennetic driven rotating stand for the driver as part of a 2 part project so I can put it on display next to a Coffee Engine once I get one of each. I've got an idea for a hopefully infinantly moving coffee engine that Should virtually "never" stop if all goes well. The stand I want to build for the driver uses the same basic principals and mechanics as a self winding pocket watch to maximize the kenetic potential of the driver to reverses and dampen the energy to spin the stand/display in the opposite direction at a slightly slower speed and storing the energy in the self winding mechinism... So if I start the driver in a clockwise spin, the display on which is sits should spin in a counter-clockwise rotation till the mechanism collects enough stored energy to reverse kenetic energy in on its self pushing the stand into a clockwise rotation causing the driver to rotate counter-clockwise, and vise versa. I've also thought about doing this with an antique or reproduction Pull string Spinning top.

I wonder if you could get deeper imprint if you heated the 3d printed mold a bit - not anywhere near melting temperature, but a good bit above ambient. That plastic sheet has an awfully low thermal capacity, meaning the moment it touches something cold, it cools down and solidifies immediately in that spot (and drains heat from adjacent areas solidifying them too). Keeping the mold warm should allow the sheet to flow more.

May be worth experimenting with just printing top infills at like 90% or something instead of 100% so there’s some porosity, replicating the porosity in plaster of Paris forms and so on.

Yeah I'm not sure how that would work! It may not withstand the heat of vacuum forming as well

@@punishedprops me neither but could be worth a shot! I’d experiment with it myself but I don’t have enough room in my cramped flat to add in a vacuum former as well 😂

Look at mister fancy pants here with his drill press that's not 50 years old, I have never seen one in such good condition outside of the show room.

I’ve seen a lot of different diy vacuum formers, but I’ve never seen anyone add any sort of scale to eyeball a more accurate idea of how far the plastic is sagging since that seems to be so important to the fit / finish. I wonder why that is.
@punishedprops
@punishedprops 3 года назад
Probably because it's inconsistent and totally dependent on the plastic and heating conditions

Great Vid. I was asking myself if you had abandoned vacuum forming after building the large heating box and vacuum plate a while ago, which would have been a damn shame! Would you try out a larger vacuum forming project with your larger plate and frame for chest armor (or the like) to educate us on the challenges of larger projects? That would be awesome! I even saw a maker video once where some used high density eva foam successfuly in vacuum forming instead of styrene or petg....Cheers from Germany!

I'm not sure! If we come up with a costume that needs the process then we'll definitely try it out :)

Have you thought about creating a small ledge on the underside of the mold, so there is an air gap between the bottom of the mold and the top of the platen? Otherwise the small holes you added to the mold back up onto solid board and are not likely to help pull the vacuum.

I definitely should have done something like that, I think it would have helped to get those little crevices to form better
