Richard, I did exactly what you said on the video. Everything went smoothly, but when I popped the battery in and squeezed the trigger, I heard a pop. Looks like I fried the board. I checked and I don't think I crossed the wires--I had the red on the left and the black on the right. What gives? Is it toast or is the board replaceable? Thanks.

I am a 73 year old woman who successfully fixed the trigger on my vacuum thanks to your video! Those who are attempting to accomplish this task make sure you have a thin torx T8 screwdriver before starting. Look for one like Richard uses in the video. The first one I bought had a sleeve too large to fit in one of the areas so I had to buy another one. I can't thank you enough for the excellent video!!

@@mrrestrepo6812 T8 screwdrivers are specialized tools that are used mainly for electrical / computer work. The tip of the screwdriver looks like a multi pointed star. Look on ebay there are plenty there at cheap prices. Buy a kit with varying sizes as you never know when you might need them again. Go for the longer 100 ml length ones or longer (you may find that an extender bar may be useful) so you can get to the screw down the handle

Richard you are the best! I had a broken trigger on my Dyson V 11 that was just out of warranty. The only Dyson Center in downstate New York had a three month lag time just to see the machine and never answered my phone calls. The two vacuum cleaner repair centers in my neighborhood said they couldn’t touch the Dyson out of warranty. Outrageous for Dyson to leave you no real options. To the point, I am a 71 year old woman who has never ever ever fixed anything and thanks to your video and the instructions on tools etc. I fix that Dyson trigger! It did take me 3 1/2 hours instead of 17 minutes….but I so appreciate you doing this work. Thank you!

wow! Thanks for sharing your story! I am so glad this was helpful for you! As a former Dyson warranty center, I can attest that they do not support small businesses. I was treated as a door mat and so I stopped working with them. I will fix and service them for my customers, but I won't sell them or do their warranty repairs ever again.

This was awesome - thank you. $8 replacement trigger on Amazon and 45 mins of my time to repair a V10 animal. BTW if anyone is watching this and when you pull the trigger after re-assempling and the battery just flashes once and it won't start, check that the small white lead is properly connected. Its easy taking it off, but not as obvious how to get it properly re-seated.

An absolutely brilliant “how to” video to enable me to fix a friend’s “V11 absolute” including the little problems that might be encountered during disassembly and assembly. One point that I can possibly give a useful comment on is that I didn’t have a long shafted Torx T8 driver, but made do with a little Torx driver that was included in a sat nav battery replacement kit which would comfortably fit down the long trigger grip handle. This tool wasn’t quite long enough but had a useful hex shape at the far end of the handle that fitted into a 9/32” socket - job done!!! Thanks once again for giving us amateur menders the knowledge to accomplish this repair job.

I think RU-vid has been a boon to do-it-yourselfers. It's saved me thousands of dollars in repair costs over the years, from replacing the capacitor in my AC unit to changing the broken trigger switch in my Dyson vacuum. That said, there are a lot of so-called experts on RU-vid who waste your time because I suppose they like to hear themselves talk. Well , Richar's Vacuum Center, your delivery is perfect. One, you know what you're talking about, two, you didn't waste time with a 10 minute intro and finally the content was perfect, nothing omitted and no extraneous BS. If you ever get bored with vacuums, you can put together some RU-vid workshops for those verbose RU-vid people who waste 60 minutes of your life when 10 would have been just right. Great job dude! By the way, I never ever comment on RU-vid videos. Yours was worth it.

Thank you so much for this Richard. I was about to throw my defunct Dyson V11 out. It had been cutting out sporadically for ages and finally gave up the ghost. I had suspected it was a trigger problem but couldn't face getting it to a repair shop. I decided to take a look online to see if I could fix it myself. Encouraged by Gayle Insler's comment here recently, I went for it, bought a T8 screwdriver and got stuck in. Husband only interfered a little bit, lol! I'm coming up to 68 and never repaired anything either, so feel absolutely chuffed to bits that I now have a working machine. Great stuff! P.S. It took me several hours too, over a a couple of days, but so worth it. Thank you again!

On my particular V11, I removed the white plastic cover to find that the circuit board had a thick coating of clear silicone on it. I was able to carefully chip away at the silicone to expose the terminals/wires and complete the repair, but it's something to keep in mind. You have to be careful when removing the silicone to not damage the wires, and make sure that the metal terminals and connector are left spotless before re-assembly to get good electrical contact, but it was manageable. Either way, great video! Thank you!

I know this is an old video, but I'm very happy to have found it. My four-year-old Dyson just quit working, and when I took it in to see if it could be repaired, was told it was the trigger, but the part was probably no longer available and/or if it was, it would take a very long time for the repair shop to get it in. They suggested I buy a new vacuum cleaner from them to the tune of $700! I immediately did an internet search on my own for the part and then stumbled on this video. After watching it, I ordered the part (it included the thin torx T8 screwdriver), had it within two days, followed this excellent step-by-step video, and within about an hour had my vacuum cleaner repaired! This video saved me from buying a new vacuum cleaner, and all for less than $14.00!

Excellent video. My V11 was only a few weeks out of warranty when the trigger failed. After many calls to Dyson due to failed promises of a callback they finally directed me to an electrical services company that would fix it for £79! These plastic triggers are all over the internet (as this is a common problem) and probably only cost a few pence to make. I got one for a few quid and thanks to your excellent helpful video was able to change the trigger relatively easily and quickly. Thanks for saving me money and the hassle of waiting for someone else to fit this job in. I'm extremely disappointed with Dyson. Any other "reputable" company with a known component failure would instigate a product recall. Or at least be more helpful to its customers.

Can’t believe it, I fixed it yesterday thanks to your help. Took just two trips to both Home Depot and Lowes to find a T8, breathing in tons of micro fine dust powder and about 2 frustrating hours to get some of the screws off. But I did it!!! I was so sure that I would never get this thing to work again so I ordered a new Dyson because I can’t live without it and when it actually started up again after reassembling it back together again I felt an overwhelming warm fussy feeling of bonus!!! Granted, I mysteriously have two screws left over and it kind of makes a faint whistles noise when on, but it works! That’s all that matters to me. Thank you for this video.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I managed to fix the trigger on my V11 thanks to following your really clear instructions. Admittedly I probably too me around 3 hours to fix it as the more parts I unscrewed, the more wine I drank... but it worked :)

Thanks for an excellent video tutorial. Managed to take my v11 apart and whilst I wait for Amazon to deliver my new modified trigger I thought I would thank you for the clear instructions you provide. Hope it goes back as easily as it came apart. 🙏🤞

Follows this tutorial exactly and (given having the right torque driver) had the repair done in about 20 minutes. $27 later and the D11 runs like new!

Thank you, mate. I got most of the way through disassembling my vacuum before I had a thought to see if I needed to pull apart this many components to look at the trigger. Replacement part on the way, but a little super glue and a wooden skewer as a splint is working in the interim.

Thank you!! Dyson tried to charge me £85 to repair this but I bought a spare button on Amazon for £9. Managed to change it following your video. 👏🏼

Thank you for this information. This video and a thin Torx T8 that I bought at the same time I bought the new trigger was all I needed. Make sure to have all things in order and be in the good mindset before starting on it and you'll be done before you know it. I can honestly say that this is probably less stressful that emailing Dyson with a complaint about the trigger malfunction after your warranty time is over. Greetings from the Netherlands

What a stupid design flaw in the original trigger. My broken one was identical to the one in your video. It’s great that people like you share this information and concise instructions on the repair and reassembly. Easy to follow and got my vacuum back to working great!

This is by far the best video on this topic. THANK YOU. My vac came apart exactly as described in this video. No surprises. It failed and the video seemed easy enough so I have REPAIRED the trigger with the old super glue and baking soda trick, we'll see how it lasts while I wait for a replacement "upgraded" trigger to come in.

When I wrote to Dyson about my trigger being broken on my V11, they told me way too fast that I had to change the whole main body assembly (cyclone + handle assembly). Which is basically the whole vaccum and costs a fortune. Good for me that I successfully forced them to send the part totally free, even if I was out of warranty, thanks to the consumers protection act in my province... 😂 They kind of shot themselves in the foot there! Now I'll use your great video to fix my old one, and after buying a few extra parts, I'll have two V11!

Thank you thank you! Saved me so much money and time. I swept my house for a week and was like how did any one do this everyday! Ran across this video and knew it was my trigger and not the battery!

Thank you so much for the video. Our V11’s trigger was replaced and is working perfectly again. We had it for 4 years, after the replacement of the new trigger the machine definitely will last longer 🎉.

I repaired my Dyson Trigger and all it cost me was $10; couldn’t get it fixed anywhere else for that cheap. The purchase was for the trigger and a Torx 8 screwdriver. Couldn’t have done it without your help.

I also want to thank you for an excellent video making it possible for a 79 year old to successfully do the job with a new trigger. Only difficulty was getting the two screws out at the 5:45 mark. I was worried that the spring might also need to be replaced as it seemed a little stretched, but it worked fine after reassembly. Great job--best video by far. Thanks again.
