This Valedictorian called out her high school's staff for their lack of support and setting bad examples in this scathing grad speech.
» Subscribe to NowThis: go.nowth.is/New...
In US news, high school graduate Nataly Buhr shocked the audience and the world with her San Ysidro High School valedictorian speech. The headlines will surely read 'Valedictorian shocks world with brutally honest speech,' because in this grad speech she called out teachers and school staff for being negligent and accused one faculty of being a drunk teacher. Buhr hoped students would find her graduation speech inspirational. A rep from Sweetwater Union High School District called the speech 'unfortunate.' Buhr is evidently not the teachers pet.

It would basically show that they are guilty and trying to cover up - not to mention the social taboo of "silencing a child", and the media fallout would have been a hundred times worse. The only thing they COULD do was stand there and wait for it to end and do damage control afterwards. Honestly, it was a brilliant move by the student because they would have brushed ot under the rug if she "aired her grievances" on a letter or in the privacy of their offices because they protect each other and their jobs so nothing would have been done. Epically if she had waited until after the graduation - they would say shes no longer a student and dismiss her. So doing it this way forces them to hear her and address the issues because now the media and everyone else knows and are watching their response.

@@OceanFrontVilla3 Note; no one said anything about Ivy League schools, nor did I imply I was talking about Ivy league schools. Find a better argument to make, because the United States has the best colleges/universities in the world. "Challenging schools" mean that the average SAT and ACT score is 1570 and 36 respectively, with an acceptance rate of 4% at best... Like MIT, Duke, or Stanford. Yes, I have hired plenty of people. I was the hiring/regional manager at LOVES for a few years before I decided to go back to school for nuclear engineering. People like the girl in the video make it much farther in life than people like yourself, who don't seem have the gall to stand up for themselves. You can call her whatever you want! Snowflake, crybaby, whatever. I'm sure if you actually said any of this to her face, she'd laugh you out of town. Lastly, I'm going to assume that you're an alcoholic yourself...since you seem so keen on defending them and their illness. If not, then I recommend you check your priorities. I for one pay taxes to send my children to school so that they can LEARN. If anything is impeding them of learning(like, oh, I don't know...a drunk teacher?) then it needs to be addressed. P.S. Scholarships are made purposely difficult to come across in the United States, since you can't just apply from anywhere you want. Most are regional, and hyper-specific. He says, “I’m on a diet” and then angrily walks over to his desk. One of the kids says, “Why not just eat” this ticks him off for some reason and he says in an angry tone, “This is why teachers get grey hairs”. That was my least liked teacher. The one who had nothing for the average, or the struggling, but instead elected to pour all their attention into the gifted students as if they were the ones that needed the help learning to be a better student. As though some future famous author was going to vindicate all the years they committed to the teaching profession with some fold out in a book sleeve, "About the author," where they thank the English teacher that inspired them back in highschool. I find that, among Christian's, this is also the same person to whom the "going *to* church," will never be as important to them as the "being seen *at* church," is.

My staff at my shool was terrible!! They always made appointments that never ended up being fulfilled and I genuinely feel like my school district let so many students who needed actual help slip through the cracks. I skipped classes everyday because I was being bullied and would cry in the staircase almost every day but all I got were scathing phone calls to home rather than giving me the help I asked for several times. my skipping made me behind in my classes and so instead of taking the classes I needed they put a bunch of electives instead of my core classes. Luckily I got out of there my senior year and I don't miss it at all but I never made good high school memories and that's what I regret most

@@kayleahrierson628 For most of the year? When things like that happen, the other counselors/ a new temporary counselor is appointed/hired to help students. She could've let the students know there was a family issue and she would not be available and would reschedule their appointments with other counselors or for when she was able to come back to work. My college counselor has purposely submitted college apps of students she disliked late. No one believes the students and students aren’t willing to speak up during their time in school because it could mean risking your future. Thank you for what you do! I'm going into my senior year of high school and I've had several teachers. Some who use their knowledge to help and guide others into the world, and others who like to abuse the privilege of being in charge of a group of young students 8 hours a day. Thank you for being the first one.

If you're a teacher, you should give sound advice. There's always a time and place to speak the truth. Sometime, holding back the truth, is more powerful and brave, than one might think. Lips sinks ships. We are all human. Forgiveness is golden.

i live near this school, less than 15 miles away, little did the valedictorian know that her councilors daughter was just killed by a drunk driver while she was running one. that councilors “absence” was because her daughter was murdered and she was taking care of herself and family.

My condolences go out to the councilor's family but you mentioned that lose just happened. The valedictorian said it was a problem all year to get in touch with that councilor from the beginning, why weren't they doing their job then?

Leeann Sampson they had a replacement councilor because the original councilor was seeking help and taking care of her other children as well.

She would never have felt the need to do this if her concerns had been dealt with in the first place. It sounds like she exhausted all avenues and this was the last one left. She used it well.

The problem is her generation is just as bad as previous generations of ignoring people asking for help around them. She'll get it much worse because she helped make public shaming ok.

For any of you who didn't like her speech, you can't handle the truth and you needed it, hopefully the school staff will wake up and grow up and become respectful adults but unfortunately you need to be fired so you can start over become productive somehow in your life.
