The Valencia Marathon is one of our favourite events, with a flat and fast course, great weather, and a December date that lets you smash out one last race before settling in for Christmas. In 2022 Run Testers Gill and Nick were out for the race, with Gill eyeing up a PB and Nick shooting for a sub-2:30 in the Nike Alphafly 2 after PB’ing in the Vaporfly 2 in Berlin. Here’s how they got on.

Totally agree with you about the start, it was chaos - lots of unnecessary stresses and strains. Whatever they did so well in 2021 they completely messed up in 2022. Anyway - well done to you both!

Always found Stryd to be accurate for distances without calibration. I get the feeling the calibration is intended as a last resort if you are consistently getting issues rather than something to do because it’s there.

Well done guys, incredible running both! I'm hoping to run Valencia next year. I have a similar fueling strategy to you, Nick. One Maurten 320 mix in the morn and a SiS tab in water (along with the porridge) and then I carry 2 500ml flasks of a 320 mix drink each, one in the hand and one in the flipbelt. Not ideal to be carrying it but it works for me. I've never tried the gels, had bad experiences with other branded gels in the past, maybe it's time to revisit them.
@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
Thanks! Like the sound of that strategy haha. I find I can do 2-3 gels OK, but when I fully rely on them to try and hit high amounts of carbs it sometimes gets too much for the stomach, and even when it doesn’t get too bad I still feel much better on drinks

Well done to you both! Nick, I have tried taking a Salomon 250ml soft flask on a run, in a running belt, but the nozzle just leaks with any pressure on it when running. How do you stop this from happening with your soft flask nozzles? Any help/advice you can give would be appreciated.
@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
Thanks! The Decathlon flasks have a valve you shut by turning it, extra secure! Can easily turn it in your mouth before/after drinking. I’ve also used normal bite valves before though- I’d try and have the nozzle sticking out to the side away from waist and didn’t get too much leaking!

Another question on nutrition Nick. I used something similar on my last Marathon but just had two 250ml flasks mixed with one 320 = 500ml. You have 3 flasks 250ml, do you mixed your last 320 with 250ml? Or how do you mix your 320 with 3 x 250ml. Might be a stupid question, apologies in advance, math was never my strong point
@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
Hi Paula! I either mix up an entire 500ml of 320 and pop half in a bottle and drink the other half at some point (maybe night before). Or in Valencia I made 250ml in a bottle with the 160 drink mix for the same carb amount.

Ahh, so 320 eh. I used 160 but four of them in 500ml handheld bottles in my last (virtual) marathon where i used my car boot to reload the drink mix! So you drink from the aid stations as well? How much water do you drink at that point, a swig then throw it? I'm a 3:30 btw.
@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
I'll have a couple of swigs of water at the aid stations yep, but not that much. In Berlin I barely drank anything as it was cups and I mostly just spilled it on myself.

@@TheRunTesters Cheers! With the 320, did it dissolve okay? Even running with the 160 I was shaking it a lot - it can form a gel at the bottom of the bottle can't it? I need to try warm water...

Oh Nick, you and I cross the line more or less at the same time. I follow your videos about a year or more. I'm from a little village of Valéncia. I run usually with Vaporfly on Marathon but this time I try to Adios Pro 3 and I run my PB. Great shoes. I'm very happy to run in 2:28:52. At the moment I only wear the Epix to run, AW 24/7 as that’s the one I’m using to test Stryd and some other apps for a video. About to start testing other watches tho, so need to make room…

@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
Hey sorry should have been clearer, I'll mix up a couple of sachets to fill the three flasks. So either I do two 500ml bottles of 320 and drink the 250ml left the night before, or do a 250ml bottle of 160 mix to fill the other flask.
@matthewbrett3135
@matthewbrett3135 Год назад
Is it the next gen Stryd or the older wind pod? Either way, your placement on the shoe isn’t great which may affect things, should be nearer the bottom of the laces and you can get an angled clip off Etsy for shoes like the Alphafly and Vaporfly to keep it facing straight on. Congrats on your time!!
@JoutarouKuujou1
@JoutarouKuujou1 Год назад
Yeah I emailed stryd and they said pretty much the same thing. The key thing is the placement should be consistent across all your shoes
@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
Thanks! It’s the new one and yep position is tough on Alpha, but it was calibrated in that position. Also it changed distance readings as I got faster in race, without changing position. Just think pace isn’t perfect with it, power and other stuff more useful I’m sure
@matthewbrett3135
@matthewbrett3135 Год назад
Was the race any hotter or colder when the pace changed. I think it uses other sensors alongside the accelerometers to measure vertical changes so may have been something like that as it sounds odd. You will need to keep placement the same as the wind port impacts the power readings so unless you plan to change calibration per shoe, they’ll likely differ depending on placement. I love mine so be interested to see your opinion in due course.
@TheRunTesters
@TheRunTesters Год назад
It got warmer but jumping from 1.01 to 1.03 on manual Ks is big change. I’ve long been a fan of Stryd, but have found the distance readings tricky to calibrate with super shoes in particular. And multi-band GPS is so good it’s not a big selling point of the pod as it used to be imo. But lots of other stuff to like about it too
@monobboard
@monobboard Год назад
@@matthewbrett3135 Many things to consider. Sounds like one has to focus more on the Stryd rather on the race itself?
@mattworthington7671
@mattworthington7671 Год назад
Gus from Stryd won't agree with the accuracy statement, but I don't know anyone who hasn't needed to calibrate it. I've also found the same that when calibrated (I had to set 104.6 on mine), that it will still change and show different distances on the same route depending on the pace. Multiband on the 955 is plenty accurate enough now, only thing is the few seconds it can take to detect the change in pace, where the Stryd was faster at picking up changes (which are pointless TBH when it's not accurate!)
@gudboyngdisyerto
@gudboyngdisyerto Год назад
between my highest and lowest stack shoes, there's 30 meters difference per km with stryd. some comments in other videos told me they use stryd for power and let the watch measure distance and pace. that doesn't make sense as you can't trust the power readings when it can't measure distance correctly
