Still one of the best JRPGs I've ever played. I may be an FPS aficionado, but that doesn't mean I can't fully enjoy experiences as majestic and soulful as this one.
I wouldn't be without Brandon, he was the voice gametrailers, the best in biz back then. Gamespot and IGN immortalized lazy 5 minute reviews, just ridiculous.
I put it on par with Chrono Trigger. One of the most polished, perfectly paced, most replayable RPGs of all time. Everything in it is good. No filler. It's possibly the best game Sega has ever made.
This is a remaster review, not a new release review. All of that was said in the original review, the point of this review is to state whats new and different.
The new Valkyria Revolution is such a slap in the face to this great game. They took out everything that makes this game unlike any other JRPG type games. They made it a hack n slash mixed with the usual final fantasy type combat and they no longer have the great looking cell shaded look.
Just played VC 1 and 4 and holy shit people I can't say how much these games are underrated. Buy these games and support these devs - these games are a treasure
Maybe its just me, but does anyone else kinda get misty eyed when they watch the intro and that music kicks in? Bought it back in 2008 and again in 2016. More reviews please. Going sign up for patron with you guys..... just need a new career is all.
Wasn't expecting a review of this, but always welcome, this is a great game, it was 8 years ago and it still is. And now it even has that delicious 1080p-60fps that is mandatory for some people out there lol This game is totally in my top 10 games off all time, I own it 3 times now XD The ranking could use some work though, even maybe by completing it scout-superfast can only get you up to B-rank, but you have to beef up your score with extra kills to bump it up to A. But regardless of ranking, it's always very satisfying to completely clear a map, eradicating all enemies, even if you do get a D-rank for it lol
I'm more worried that the only people buying this will be the old fans from back on PS3. Everyone who plays this game loves it, yet so few people are willing to try it
Fantastic review. I feel like I've heard everything I need to know about this game, to make an informed purchase. Which certainly isn't guaranteed these days.
Hmm I like the game, and I got the remastered edition on pc last year (?), but honestly the more I've played it, the more I realize how dissonant the anime tropes feel in the actual narrative, and how ultimately simplistic it is in the execution of a nuanced plot. In certain parts the story seems thoughtful, but in the end, the moe / dating sim / genocide kinda falls apart. Moreover, the "innocent" romance between the main characters is basically any anime/jrpg romance ever. Still its true, if you're curious and haven't tried it, it's not a bad game. I personally wouldn't rate it as highly, but I suppose it has been overlooked before so it deserves a boost.
As I remember I watched Your team review of the PS3 Version @ That time...admired The review & still admiring the work on the remastered version, peace & Easy allies FTW
You can't imagie how happy I become every time a new EZA review is made. I used to blindly trust the Gametrailers review as those were in my opinion the best out there, and now that trend can continue. Thanks for making this channel happen
hope this means we'll get a odin sphere review as well. I know those are completely different games by completely different companies but I'm referring more to the fact that this review basically confirms that you guys won't shy away from reviewing a game just because it's a remaster, which is GREAT! And I feel odin sphere did more with it's remaster than this game did in terms of actually changing how the game works instead of just making it look better.
Just recently started playing VC due to the remaster and 4 being sold together at a good price. Love the game, the setting, the strategy, and the characters, and especially LOVE seeing my old friends from Skies of Arcadia lending a hand... God I want to play that game again... That being said, if I had one complaint, it would be... Why why WHY did they make ranks based solely on the number of turns a battle takes? To get the best rank, you have to do insane things like charge your troops past enemies plinking away at them, ignoring everything but the goal. Forget tactics, forget cover, just run past all the enemy troops and HOPE your soldier doesn't miss killing someone at a critical moment, because you need that high rank, without it, you can't afford your upgrades.
I'm on chapter 3 and this game is magnificent! It reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics, a game not even Xcom really did for me. Its unique hybrid of turn based strategy, real time action, positioning strategies, little handholding, the robustness of creating a squad, and the story made this a game I was gonna play for a few hours to a game I'm putting everything else down to play to completion right now
Great review of a truly great game. I play a lot of RPG's and JRPG's but never did this one, so I bought it on release only a short time ago. And it's true that the ranking system is not the best, give yourself a defense boost and rush to the flag ignoring all enemies (or killing only a select few) and you get yourself an a rank for that mission. I found it really strange since those enemies were suddenly "gone" after that capture. Anyway the story, music, voices and graphics are very good. And with all the extra skirmishes or even extra story's like "Largo's Vegetables" (really weird) you last a long time.
One of the only highly praised games I haven't played yet. I watched this yesterday, and decided to give it a shot. Whether you guys see this comment or not, I'd like to let you know how I feel once I go into it. But regardless, thank you for the review!
I own this game on Steam but i've never played it, i'm not a patient person and it gives me the impression that it will be hard and frustrating. Am i right? I don't have the patience for deep tactical planning or replaying the same part over and over
Game is faster and has a more direct feel than traditional strategy or turn based games. Give it a try. Some missions get a little harder later on, but it's not like you need to replay them a dozen times to success.
As I love it 110%, dont think you would, but try a couple of hours would give you the answer. A first play needs patience and can be a hard game really thinking in a strategic way to beat a map. Give it a try, to me Valkyria was a buried treasure game for years when it came out on PS3.
This is hands down my favorite game of the last gen consoles, and perhaps my favorite game of all time. And yeah scouts are reaaaaaaly broken, back on PS3 I was able to beat most missions in 1 turn using the Alicia (maybe all can't remember if there were some that couldn't be beaten quickly)
Does look better. If this makes it to PC on Steam (i never read anything about if it is or not), at the very least, people who already owned the 2014 PC release should get a discount on the remastered version.
So... Allies dumb question are you EVER going to review Pokken Tournament? I know it's late but it really surprises me you haven't reviewed it yet. Oh and excellent review.
It was one of the best games I've played back then on my PS3, too bad Sega doesn't seem to be porting part two to the PC or even releasing the successors in the west. Though I fear they can't touch the greatness that the first iteration is anyway.
Excellent it is, to me its a masterpiece strategy game! Kept my PS3 copy for 8 years, but could not restrict myself of buying a smaller better version for PS4! So rare strategy games on consoles for many years, always a pleasure replaying. Sad the VC2 & 3 where wasted on PSP back in the day...
You should check out the anime if you haven't Ben, it's certainly not a 10/10 but it isn't bad either, and it does a nice job of fleshing out some of the characters on the Imperial side, particularly Maximilian and Jaeger.
I adore the Advance Wars series but am excessively bored by story in tactical games, especially if I can't skip it. Should I still give this a shot? I know Ben-san says I have no excuse but to be fair he says this quite often^^
The subtitles are probably from the English dialogue though. That's how it is in the PC-version and I'm assuming that's the same for this version. This means that they aren't a translation of the Japanese dialogue. I still completed the game on PC this way, but just to let you know.
If you can't understand Japanese but but prefer Japanese voice work then it's not an issue anyway - although it ought to be said that, for the most part, the english VA on this is well above a lot of dub work from the time, or since.
I got this for PS3 a long time ago. I was enjoying every single moment of it, and then there was this one mission I had to use a guide to continue the game. Pretty much killed it for me after that. Still, if you absolutely love turn-based tactics and/or good at it. What the hell are you waiting for? Get the damn game already
But you know he is only the voice? Anyway: if you really love the Old GT-crew, go to www.patreon.com/EasyAllies and give them some bucks. ;) So good to have all of them back, even Damiani, who is working on a successor of his Pop Fiction-series right now...
Wait, isn't the reviewer an ancient IGN reviewer? Or gamespot? or game trailer? I remember his voice from the first Gears of War review... somewhere... Or is it another game in the same time period
Hi! We're all from GameTrailers. The narrator is Brandon Jones who founded GameTrailers and did the vast majority of voice over. We started Easy Allies shortly after GT was shut down. Welcome back! -Bloodworth
I'd say if you enjoy fire emblem, advance wars, maybe ffta on gba and haven't bought and beaten this game you must enjoy shooting yourself in the foot and denying yourself what you deserve. Amazing game and I recommend hard difficulty as it is actually a struggle later on I rage quit for about a month mid game I couldn't beat this one level and came back with a vengeance
my advice for hard mode? have a core team of scouts you rely on and make sure at least one good sniper and engineer stay alive through the end. and use smoke like a mad man. I almost never used my tank for anything else! welkin was lighting it up
First time through just ignore the ranking system; just play it how you want. Getting less XP will actually help you not get OP too quickly and you'll enjoy the game more. If you want the medals for best ranking just come back and do it later when you can likely breeze through - even with a single character in some cases.
A great game! I remember it being pretty grindy in places, but very touching, with gorgeous water colour graphics and unique gameplay! I am surprised other games have not copied its switching from top down to first person gameplay, it really brings a strategy game to life!
the anime was also pretty well done and man there are death (alot) it's pretty good anime and I played it on my old PC I personally give it a 9/10 (it's felt a bit slow to me still a nice change of pace)
