*Centenary Lecture At Baptist Boys’ High School (BBHS) In Ogun State*
Nigeria can produce the highest quality individuals to run the most efficient governments and private institutions if we teach the right values, not only in our institutions of learning but also imbibe the ethics of hard work, honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness, among others.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, stated this in Abeokuta, Ogun State while delivering the Centenary Lecture of Baptist Boys’ High School (BBHS) in the State capital.
Speaking on the topic "Values: the difference between success and failure," Prof Osinbajo urged that an ethical revolution is necessary to fast-track the country's development towards becoming a great nation indeed.
According to the VP, there was a need for a national consensus, especially among the political, religious, and business elite, in accepting and implementing minimum ethical standards, "where we establish a national work ethic, of honesty, hard work, thrift and the deferment of gratification."
Explaining this, Prof. Osinbajo noted that, "it is what is taught and learned that shapes the character of individuals and nations. But it is not just teaching, governments must lead this ethical revolution, by rewarding ethical behaviour and ensuring speedy punishment for misconduct."
“The religious elite must reinforce the ethical direction agreed by showing that wealth, and influence are built by hardwork, diligence and the deferment of gratification and not just by miracles. The religious elite must also reject and ostracize public officers and persons whose wealth cannot be explained or is clearly from shady or suspicious sources. Every modern society has had to deal with corruption, and enthrone minimum ethical standards to succeed, we must do the same.”
The Vice President, referencing the earlier section of the ceremony where the Commemorative Centennial Obelisk with the names of the distinguished centennials inscribed upon it was unveiled, observed that the same values of integrity, hard work and trustworthiness are what makes individuals, institutions and nations great.
He said, “the difference between men and women who attain significance and those who do not are values. So, it is also the case that the difference between successful societies or countries and failed or failing countries is values.
Noting the examples of countries in Asia and Africa with huge deposits of natural resources and human talents, the VP said “while geography plays an important role in the success of people and communities, they are not defining features; otherwise, the countries with the largest deposits of mineral wealth would be the most prosperous.”
Defining values as ethical principles by which individuals and communities live, work and interact, including honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, perseverance, hard work, diligence, discipline, respect, etc., the Vice President emphasised that “it is values that determine the success or failure of individuals or societies.”
According to him, “Venezuela has one of the largest oil deposits in the world but the UN estimates that 94% of its citizens are poor. The Great Lakes region in Africa has some of the world’s richest mineral deposits, yet the countries in the region are some of the poorest in the world. On the other hand, some of the wealthiest countries in the world and those that have the most companies listed on the Nasdaq are Israel, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, South Korea and Singapore - none of which have any natural resources.
He stated that “every one of the great and successful economies of the world share the same characteristics, they emphasize hard work and integrity.”

The story about Prince Bola Ajibola reminds me of the many instructions my father left me. It was December of 1977. I was 10. My dad was on the Board of Directors for UBA while also working in the Ministry of Finance. A director at UBA is my answer to your question. A Sony TV was delivered to the house and of course, we received it. Why not?! Did I mention that it was a colour TV? Before then, we had one of those wardrobe black and white contraptions. This was a step up. We had made it! That evening, dad returned home from work and saw the TV where we had kept it. Our thoughts were probably he would be disappointed that the element of surprise had been lost, but we got from him something else entirely. This was a different daddy. It was inquisition time. "Where did this come from?" If 10 year old first born me was shocked, I couldn't imagine how my other siblings felt. This was in the 70s, when families were bigger. I had two aunts staying with us - my dad's younger sister and my mum's cousin. My older cousin was also staying with us at the time. My siblings were not old enough to stand trial so it was just us four. The inquisition continued and no one gave a favourable response. A courier came, dropped the TV for the M. L. Awoyele household and we received it as expected. That was a good thing, yes? Apparently not, according to M. L. Awoyele. When our stammering started to get to my dad, the cudgel came out. His logic? Perhaps after a few strokes, our brains will reset and we'll understand it better, by and by. But we didn't because it was beyond our understanding. What had just happened? The next day, dad went to UBA to clarify what the TV was for and they told him it was given to all Directors as Christmas gift. Mr. Integrity had done it again. But for that caning, I'm still waiting for my apology. 😁 Love you dad ❤️ and continue to rest in peace. ~ Ayo Awoyele

My father finished from here. Though he is late, he was a man of true values. How many of us wish that Prof is our president? I wish he is the candidate of the ruling party, APC. He would have won this election easily!

I am pained each time I recall how much our values have been corrupted. These men are Nigerians brought up in Nigeria handed over by the colonial masters. I remember in 1974, I was going out with an elder. We found a penny on a school's field. I violently refused when he asked me to pick the money. I reported to my dad who called it "stealing by finding". I don't know whether there's any such thing in law. But that's the Nigeria in which I grew up. May God cause the ethical revolution that big brother Osibanjo spoke of.

I once wrote on a 'T' Shirt, that I wore for many months, after the aborted 1993 Elections; "ON JUNE 12, I STAND". After the results of February 25, 2023 must have been declared, I will write on another 'T' Shirt; "ON OSINBAJO PRESIDENCY I STAND", and wear it, till it is realised in 2027! We should never wait to say, "OSINBAJO WAS THE BEST PRESIDENT, NIGERIA NEVER HAD" NEVER!!! So, immediately after the announcement of the winner of 2023 Presidential Election, not minding Who wins; "MOVEMENT FOR OSINBAJO'S PRESIDENCY" will be launched.
