You can mod the bumpers, bumpers are actually a pretty faulty part of SC. I have about 6 steam controllers, each time first thing that breaks is one of the bumpers.
@@pawes7418 I didn't say they don't work. They do work fine, in my use case for about a year and then they break. It is not a faulty design, it is just not optimal. I broke 3 shoulders until now.
one thing ive noticed about Valve hardware in general is it's very iterative. i can see a lot of design influence from Steam Machines, Steam Controllers, Vive Wands (designed in collab btw HTC and Valve), and Index Controllers all on the Steam Deck. in a vacuum, sure the Machine and Controller might be "failed" products but if they were so bad, why did Valve make a handheld gaming computer with dual touchpads, gyro input, and joysticks with capacitive sensors?
Unlike most companies, it seems valve is aware that a failure doesnt mean the whole product was bad. And i think thats what makes them such an interesting company, because a company like nintendo will experience a failure, and immediately give up on it in hardware and game design. Theres usually something good there but most companies just throw the baby out with the bath water
Great video. Only someone who loves the controller could hate it this well after all this time. After 8 years of it mostly collecting dust and helping me to get out of the house more, I'm finally going to retire it to playing only games like Timberborn. Nothing plays that game from the couch like the Steam Controller. I think this thing might shine on "city builders from the couch"
I genuinely believe there's a market for a new steam controller with a more steam deck layout approach to it in the coming years because exactly as you say, there's nothing quite like it to play specific games, and it'll be truly a shame as time goes on and they start to fail from wear and tear. Im scared for the day my analog stick starts drifting lol.
I'm surprised to see such a recent video that still has the old Steam Input UI! As for the thing you couldn't replicate, you accidentally set up the right trackpad as "joystick" (not to be confused with "as joystick"), which makes it behave exactly like the analog stick, instead of a trackpad imitating mouse through the analog stick
@Snoozie that's fair. I don't mind the super clicks bumpers, though i totally get why some people aren't a big fan. The thing that bothers me about them is that I feel like there should be an extra set of bumpers on each side. There is plenty of room for a couple smaller bumpers there, and the added functionality would be appreciated. Just feels a bit like wasted potential.
There is a sheet metal bumper mod. It's like 2 90° turns and a piece of sheet metal with a small bend in the middle. It's not very hard to do and just requires a pair of flush cutters, some scissors, and a sacrificial piece of thin metal (I used to Bakugan card back in 2017)
The steam controller was amazing, because of all the possibilities. It was essentially a controller designed for everyone. However, because it was designed for everyone it takes a lot to customize it to your personal preference. For me personally i still use it for any game i play on my TV besides racing games. The biggest issue i have is mimicking a right analog stick. In most games it works pretty well, but mapping for racing games is the bane of my existence.
Still using mine, haha. Played all of Baldur's Gate 3 with it and tbh it is still really really great. I always preferred the feel of it compared to other controllers. Maybe because I've always been a PC gamer. But gaming from your couch is way more comfy of course, and this works great with strategy and RPGs :) Other games I enjoyed using it with: Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2 Civilization V & VI 80 Days Disco Elysium Tropico 6 XCOM 2 Great video btw!
Ive been trying to use mine more outside of FPS titles and i wanted to use it in BG3 But since im playing it local co-op, it forces me to use a normal controller which is a shame
I think it is not that the gamepad itself controls differently for each game, rather that you are expected to configure it for each game to your liking.
Nope. Some games just have different rules and methods on how they can read the inputs of the controller and mouse inputs simultaneously, not to mention sensitivity is not uniform between games. Some games just have really weird pc ports or never intended to be played with a controller like this and honestly you cant really blame the devs for not accounting for it 9/10 times
The dual pads are amazing, but yes, the barrier to entry is too darn high. I have a personal template I use for most games, and then edit it as I play depending on the game specific combos and features. It gives me a common baseline to all my configs.
@@carminediserio you can export a configuration as a template. And when you configure for a new game, you can assign the template configuration and customize some more.
To remove the switching thingy on the HUD where it like switch from controller to like keyboard and mouse. All you need to do is make the controller a keyboard and mouse basically in the steam controller. Config + to do that you just like change every button input to a keyboard input and I think there's a button to do this but I can't remember
Thats what i was discussing in the video, but sometimes, you dont want your controller to be a keyboard and mouse exclusively and sometimes want it to be a hybrid Theres ways to do it but its more complex (Check nerrel's video for more info on it) but thats part of the problem, the actual set up to do that + just map every button to a key on the keyboard
TLDR. Bought Steam controller, didnt use it for years. Finally learn to use and love it. Buy a second one to have backup i bouth a steam controller in the summer of 2016 and my 2 gibbest issues were, the trackpad joystick mode and the 2 bumpers (dissicult to reach and click). I was playing dark souls 1 with some logitech controller and the SC didnt feel as good, so it got shelved for like 4 years. in the mean time i got a ps4 and used it's controlelr for on my pc as well. But then in 2020 i decided to give the SC a second chance. With the tutprials of (now) RambleCan (it was a different name back then), i learned the beauty of dual trackpads (left for movement, right for camera), gyro and in general how to make my custom configs. Unfortunately i still dont use it in every game, because some i dont like how it feels or dont have time to make custom config when KBM or ds4 work good enough. Examples: Deep Rock, Valheim - for KBM is good Helldivers 2 - for Controller + Gyro aim All Dars Souls and Assassin's Creed Games - just controller (I can play them with KBM, but started with controller and am used to it) And finally when i realized in 2022, that SC is discontinued i looks for a second hand one. It took a while but i found a great deal on a used ps3 and SC from the same person (was looking for the ps3 and randomly decided to see what else is he selling)
I still have mine, mostly as backup in case my DS4 breaks though (soon will have a pro DualSense with four paddles though). I beat a few complex games like Lies of P with it, I'd say it's pretty good, but IMO it needs some revision with a second joystick (pls Hall Effect ones), better bumpers and four back paddles, sorta reminiscent of the Steam Deck. However, their heart was in the right place, and it's a pretty good piece of hardware for a v1. I play shooters with mouse and keyboard and melee action games with a controller, but certain melee action games do have aiming instances (God of War 4/5, Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh 1/2, Witcher 3...) and in those cases gyro and/or a touchpad is really good. The thing is, the PS4 controller already does that for me while having good bumpers, and the back buttons accessory wasn't that expensive. The touchpad in the DS4/DualSense is in awkward position and this one was made to aim constantly, though. Regardless, I think the SC controller is pretty good, and might suit those people that really wanna play shooters on controller for some reason (disability, tendonitis, comfort, etc., etc.) so it's a cool thing.
I would love an updated Steam Controller while I love my original the haptics are clearly the biggest thing you notic as they are not good by todays standards of hptics, hell I would love the same controller just better build quality and better haptics
Am I the only one who recognizes that your background music is from Xenoblade Chronicles X (New L.A. Night theme)? I see that you're a man of culture as well..
@@coppyhop Hey man, yeah. Played that game on the Wii U since way back and fired it up one last time during the final months of the termination of 3DS/Wii U online. Too bad since Monolithsoft's response to the highly anticipated Switch Port is "We don't have the manpower right now" they also stated that the original team who developed the game during its inception has been now disbanded and were now at the Zelda BOTW team. That said, I'm still waiting for it. The story is okay, but the gameplay is great for me at least. If you played it too you'll really know what I mean.
The steam controller isn't perfect, my gripes with it are the triggers, they need a longer travel for racing games. But for me its the best controller I own and I fear for when it breaks. I have RSI so after 30 mins of kbm I cant play anymore for the rest of the day, but with 1 controller I can play all my games comfortably. For FPS games I mainly use the gyro for aiming and its as close as mouse if not better for me.
It genuinely depresses me that there hasnt been a controller that tries to be like the steam controller again because of disabilities and simply comfort and options. I havent used mine in awhile on account of not needing too, but when i wanna just play a game thats a shooter and not serious, its so fun to sit back and just use it and not strain myself in anyway.
hey bud, I deal with pretty bad pain in the arms for a while with pc gaming. How do you deal with it? Just stretching and breaks? Was looking at the steam controller as a good solution as I don't want to just play controller especially on fps games
Im dealing with it in a multitude of ways. Originally i bought 2 10lb weights and did some bicep curls, start at rest, and curl up slowly. Do the same with your wrist by putting it on a table edge or something, and curl your wrist from down to up both directions, wrist down, and wrist up. My arm specifically doesnt hurt anymore after a couple of months, of doing those curls every day or every other day. I also felt that pull ups, when i could do them, did the best for my arm. As for my wrist, i have no way to outright make it feel better, but using a wrist compress strap makes playing shooters bearable. Choose a weight type you're comfortable with curling and try to keep at it at least semi consistently, and maybe try using the mouse less often. I dont recommend going into competitive shooters with the steam controller until you are comfortable with it and can use it in a way you feel is best, but for most casual friendly multiplayer or singleplayer games, its fantastic. I also like to just use the controller for when im not using my keyboard to browse around casually on the internet like youtube videos. And yes, of course remember to stretch when you start feeling some pain and after playing, but not too hard. Hope any of this helps, but at the end of the day, if you can, try to find a physiotherapist. You may have a more severe case of tendonitis or even carpal tunnel.
@@Snoozie wow thanks for the quick and detailed reply! I did some PT I fixed it for a bit but it came back with a vengeance about 2 weeks ago. I work on the computer all day so it can be rough lol. I tend to stretch too hard or I used to which I think made it way worse. I'll try to be consistent with those work outs again. Thanks for the tips! Going to check out your other content :D
@@Wonkanator2 no problem, yeah it can come back, thankfully i seem to have overcome the arm pain, but the wrist stuff, sadly i need to reach out to physiotherapy myself to fix that. For me though, any workout that made the muscles near my elbow hurt, the ones i felt the pain in, to my shoulder, is the right work out to get rid of that pain.
@@Snoozie have you checked out the deltahub carpio 2.0? I have that and it really helped on wrist pain. It's really in my forearms and hands I get the most
The algorithm really hates you for some reason. Why does a good video on a channel that already has 2 thousand subscribers only get a little over 200 views instead of 2 or 3 thousand? The only reason I can think of is that you don't make videos so often so maybe try making shorts if you want your regular videos to get more views? At least the algorithm recommended your video to me. Got you a like and a new subscriber.
I appreciate it but theres a couple reasons. I had subscribers when i mostly just posted my meme content but i got tired of it so more people subbed to me are subbed cause of one of various memes i made. Surprisingly though, this is my fastest growing video because of the algorithm and i have videos in the making and other stuff. Its just hard when you have a job + im going to con for like 5 days and wont have access to my computer lmao. Should have multiple videos out within the next month or two if things go well and hope you enjoy them
It starts of the same for every week And ends in a game on ps3 Pick something out off of a drawer And hold it up against the floor! Spill some junk abou not sex Then a vegan comes just to say gex! At the desk, look like a hoarder Surrounded by some big…. Purple border…?
Just some advice, don't play that music when you say "suuuuucks". That music sounds like something you would play if you were watching a parrot fly through a rain forest. Find something else to play when complaining about a trackpad
