"Peter Hammill's great. A true original. I've just liked him for years. If you listen to him, his solo albums, I'm damn sure Bowie copied a lot out of that geezer. The credit he deserves, just has not been given to him. I love all his stuff".--John Lydon

Goodness, this is incredible. To think that I have been a huge fan of prog rock for close to 45 years now, and being 63 years of age...and just recently gotten into this band. It's beyond criminal. But I am making amends as quickly as I can. Thank you Eric De Rosa for your amazing upload!! Tim here in Essex County in Southwestern Ontario, appreciates it immensely.

I saw VDGG around the time this album was released at the Sheffield city hall. They had second billing after Lindisfarne and above Dr Strangely Strange. Bottom billing went to an up and coming band called Genesis. I wonder what happened to them. The ticket price I seem to remember was 17Shilling and 6 pence. 4 hours of great entertainment for under a £.

Amen to that. I recently read about John Lyndon bigging him up in the late 70s stating that Bowie "owed" Hammill .
@ThefightingCelt
@ThefightingCelt 4 года назад
Lydon , who was also into Bowie , did say that , but there is no basis in it . I doubt very much whether David Bowie was even aware of Peter Hammill , let alone VDGG , in those early days . Bowie was much more interested in the likes of Lou Reed and Scott Walker .

I cannot even begin to describe how beautiful a song "Afterwards" is. I remember the late 60's. This song brings me back. I become a six year old again. It is very bittersweet. A time that is long gone, never to return again. It was too beautiful for an innocent kid watching Viet Nam unfold on the telly. Something was wrong in my little utopia. Hammill reminds me everytime I hear this, how lucky I was to be safe with my first bicycle and tonka toys. It did not last. Nothing ever does.

I find that quite a lot of '69 albums are like that. Caught in the transition from 60's to 70's I guess. We got some fantastic albums that year, I believe '69-'74 was the peak of music. Mid-late 70' seems a bit lacking of something to me.

In my (one) year of university study in 1971, I often frequented a student pub where "underground" music was played, as this style became initially known to me. It was an eyeopener at the age of 18, having been raised in a smaller village. I'm pretty sure that this particular album was a regular there, it would have fitted in perfectly.

First time I have heard this. Very good indeed. Love that bass work - pity he moved on so quickly. And Hugh Banton's organ is superb. Actually better than some of their later stuff.

Thank you for posting this. Here I am in Dec. 2021 watching the world fade away. I was lucky enough to see VDGG a few times. They never get the recognition deserved of them. Peter Hammil worked with so many people and really many Proggers have no idea who he is. Ugh.

Van Der Graff even on this formative and great album were showing how original , uncomprimising and inventive they were . The classic albums were yet to come but this debut showed how great a band on the progressive scene they were destined to be .

First effort from Peter Hammill & Associates. The result is outstanding, even more if you consider that it was recorded in one long, long session. It is genuine and a bit naif, and it promises what was coming. Wonderful start.

Not according to wikipedia:(January 1969, 31 July - 1 August 1969). It looks like it was spread out over at least three days.
@Babyboss65
@Babyboss65 4 года назад
+Mike Reiss My assumption would be that one track (no idea which one) was recorded in January and the rest was recorded in a long overnight session.

@@Babyboss65 Afterwards and Necromancer were recorded in Jan by VdGG , the others with the intention to make a Hammill solo album in that one session, but with the same musicians. It seems when the album then was released as the first VdGG album 2 of the songs were skipped in favour of the 2 earlier recorded songs. Most of the songs were played live by the band anyway, so in the end it is in one way or another the truly first band album.
