saw them in 80, i think, they were awesome, looked just like this ^ but i remember a lot of drinking and smoking on stage, well all over the building lol, RNR at its peak, for me anyway
i loved making book covers and drawing on denim. i was 10 at this time and was a skate rat a few years later. but i did jam to VH for many years. they were just a solid band and impossible to not like them.
But more and more is starting to come out they actually have quite a bit of footage. I was listening to an interview with Michael Anthony and he was talking about they did record a lot of footage when they first started because they wanted to tweak their performance so they wanted to see how they looked on stage so little by little a lot of it was starting to come out and they’re re-digitalizing the videos to make them look better so keep looking and you’ll find some here on RU-vid🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Everything before 1998 was their prime years. But while there's pro shot good footage of every Sammy era tour there's nothing official from the Roth era, just pro shot boots of varying quality
I know, they edited to add the count to make it look the master but this is what was broadcasted on TV after edit, I have the exact same one still in the attic somewhere in VHS tape 🤷🏻♀️
@jayc650 Con Maybe but I think he probably made serious jackpot before Eddie and Alex got greedy. So your assumption (and assumption is always the the worst thing anyone can do in life) is that he didn't stand up for himself? His status is just fine. That is fact not fiction from assumption.
@jayc650 Con Bullshit. Quit assuming. You're toast and had absolutely no place in the negotiation. Deal with the fact you don't know that fact or Michael himself. Shame on you.
@jayc650 Con Like I said. You assume way too much. Just deal with that and grow up. You are way out of your league to comment on the business dealings of the band, rights, royalties and someone's personal character. Good damn thing you don't work for me. I'd buck you down hard.
@@dr.stonks9911 yeah but you'll sit there and call people names like Boomer not knowing who in the hell are you talkin to on the other side. Sounds like you're doing plenty of complaining son. So how about you get over it.
So many people have said.. This will never happen again ! I am so fortunate that I grew up in the 70s and the 80s. I've seen Van Halen many times nothing compares to it. So thankful for the music as it remains Eddie will be truly missed.
I got her agree with you. I grew up the same as you did. I'm 57 years old. I live in South Florida. I've seen Van Halen so many times. It's like every time I go see Van Halen it's like seeing them for the first time Eddie's memorizing just just memorizing you can't take your eyes off of them. You can't. I mean s*** it's it's just like you're frozen in time. It's unbelievable to watch him. Everybody misses him. I'm crying now watching this. I'm not afraid or scared to admit that I'm a grown man. I don't care. It's this is my life like millions of other fans. You know any Eddie is the goat, the king. He did it all. I mean Van Halen who didn't grow up on that in our era. You know February 10th 1978 they came out. They blew everybody away. Actually they came out 1972. They were called Mammoth but they changed their name. When David Lee Roth told any of the change, their name and the rest was history. F****** a Van Halen is the best in the world. Always will be too bad. Will never get to see them play again. I've seen them play many times. There's there's no comparison to them. Rest in peace at a you're so miss brother. We all love you
Born & raised in San Bernardino I was 19 when this went down at Glen Helen regional park we camped in my brothers van 4 days. Went all 3 days this was the best of all 3 Van Halen Judas Priest Scorpions Ozzy Triumph And a up & coming band named Motley Crue Best concert of my life
Also born and raised in San Bernardino and I too attended Heavy Metal Day. There was another band that was super hot at the time and was a late add that day - Quiet Riot.
I will never forget hearing Van Halen for the first time. My brother called my cousin and me into his room. He said no more disco music for us. He played the first Van Halen album for us. It was the most awesome sound I ever heard in my life!! Long live Van Halen!!
@honey badger and Dave's amusing anecdotes on matrimony. Dave says, you Have: 1 - the Engagement ring 2 - the Wedding ring AND 3 - the SUFFER . . . ing
I love the fact that every time I see Eddie playing that guitar it looks like he just got it as a Christmas present and he just loves the thing! The smile is a mile wide
THAT'S AN AWESOME RIGHT ON DESCRIPTION!!!!!!! believe it or not... I had the honor of doing Eddie and Alex's handprints in Terrazzo in front of the Guitar Center in Hollywood ... Eddie has the greatest smile! Got to see them twice...the First Tour at Anaheim and here at the US Festival! ✌️ PS... I was on the football team at Downey High when coach told James Hetfield that he had to cut his hair...James reply was... Eddie Van Halen doesn't have to cut his hair...the rest is Rock and roll history in the making still....blows me away
I was 15 we would ditch school roll the windows up in our hot rods and jam VH and Ac/DC while we smoked ourselves stupid, went on to Love Dio Sabbath, Deep purple, Pink Floyd we had the greatest music ever that’s why it’s still around.
yeah man, Reagan was president, metal was exploding, and VH ruled the world. good times, even tho I was convinced I would be drafted in a 3rd world war against USSR in a few years lol! I was 16
@@lawnmowerman4040 hellyeah.. I would go to typing class high af and kick ass on that typewriter lol I was stoned there always and I was alway #1 or 2 in the class, hyper- focussed :)
@@vaekkriinhart4347 Funny thing though my Aunt was Pentecost and told me that they would be watching us through our tv’s in 1979, man was she right our phones know everything
Ahh ,what a great time to be young. The late 70s and early 80s were the best time of my life .I love you tube and being able to go back in time with vidios like this ..time has not been kind to me so watching this and feeling young again for a couple min is priceless
For the time they were outrageous and raised the bar very high for those that followed in their rock and roll foot steps. We all grew up with their music and for me, they were my favorite rock band and I will always miss Eddie's smile and sheer love of playing the guitar.. RIP Eddie... we will never forget you.
This was VH in their prime. Insanely charismatic front man, arguably the best guitarist of the day, and the best background vocals in rock. Woz and company got it right at the US Festival.
What a magical time to be a teenager!!! MTV was brand new, and some of the biggest hits came in 1982, '83, and '84. No cell phones, crazy haircuts, and people were totally tuned-in to the music. Man, I miss the s*** out of those days!!! So damn much fun!! Now I'm old, balding, and go to bed at 9:00 each night.....😕
I was at this gig, I had just turned 19 a couple weeks earlier, it took me a solid hour to slowly slide my way up to as close to the front as I could get which was about 50' It was insane , PACKED. Now I'm 55...where have all the good times gone? :)
I'm 55 too, and it's tragic what age does. Have u seen David Lee Roth lately, it's sad, he looks and sounds alful. It's like the world went on and he stayed back in 1984
@@alicesaid9761…...I just see now he's doing a 9 day Vegas "residency". I gotta think it's going to be horrible because as you say he really does sound horrible as at lest did the last time I heard him sing a couple years ago.
I would refute that statement about Dave. I just saw him open for KISS last week! Him and his band were ON-POINT! He look and sounded GREAT! For his age, he moves (and kicks) and sings exceptionally well. In fact, he sounded better than he did in 2007 when VH reunited with Eddie's son, Wolfie on bass..
This happened when you let the patients run the asylum , we lost all common sense in exchange for diversity, equality,& inclusion. It seems the powers that be are letting this happen & seem to think it’s all o.k. Well it’s not o.k. & the people will eventually are gonna get fed up with it & force common sense to be back into society. Boys are boys ,girls are girls is the first thing on the agenda !
There`s also a head level vertical kick of shaolin type style in that footage as someone who has spent 40 years doing martial arts you don`t get those skills without a lot of work.
Mike”s back up vocals are just so good. Eddie just shredding on Frankenstein and Alex pounding out those beats. And Diamond Dave just being Diamond Dave.
@@HidingFromFate not sure it was back then. (EX: most bands "FIX" "live" performances, b/c running around etc means it ain't gonna sound good. Not sure VH had FAKE backing vocals in concert at the time. The tech would be too crude back then.) PLUS, we can clearly see lots of OTHER suspicious bits, like EVH's guitaring NOT MATCHING THE AUDIO (look at his harmonics during the first guitar solo in the first song), so it's not just the fake backing vocals that are an issue in this video.
Man, they were the ultimate band during that decade! Saw them so many times then. Sold out arenas & great times ! Wish I can just turn back time for just a little bit ! Miss those days !
Michael Anthony's harmonies might as well be another instrument - they are ESSENTIAL to the total Van Halen sound and are simply lacking without it. They blended so well with Dave's and even Sammy's voice.
They were absolutely amazing and ferocious at this time and they could do no wrong. There will never be another Van Halen and I'm glad that I got to witness them live , amazing. 👍🔥🤘
My favorite studio and especially live was deep purple. Period . Also rainbow , UFO and triumph. those were the best bands I ever seen live . Then I would say Judas priest van Halen acdc and kiss. Those were the days. Also Molly hatchet dio were great live
@@davidarmitage289 it was a great line up all the way through the weekend...just incredibly HOT!!! Most of us were dehydrated and sunburned GOOD TIMES!! Lol
WhatWouldHouseDo I don’t remember it being that hot but I do remember that guy that brought out the whiskey! Pretty soon David was performing pretty badly. We made our way out to the parking lot (dry riverbed) after the 4th encore. I completely forgot that Dave wore assless chaps! 😂 Man that was great weekend!!!
It was pretty hot Let me tell ya...i fried all day long and smoked weed and drank booze as well ...My high School buddies and i met right in the right hand side of the stage ...what a fuckin coincidence lol ..Best day ever for me
Believe it or not bands are still bands today and yes music still is music. Just because it's not spoonfed to you through TV and radio doesn't mean it isn't there. Ya jaded ol geezer

You're not getting old. You just appreciate incredibly awesome music!!! And, of course, you're very fortunate to have experienced top-notch music!!!! Feel sorry for The Millennials.
GREATWHITE2 and I feel sorry for you guys for missing out on some of the actual good music today (again not spoonfed through TV or radio) because you can’t stop living in the past lol Edited to add: its also hilarious you guys are saying this on a “live” video that is so blatantly overdubbed 😂. But this is when music was music right???! lol
We're already living in the past but moving forward attempting to change what We did in the past(s)...ponder on that...i shouldn't of quit school at 15 damnit
1983 Van Halen. At the absolute height of their superpowers. Many incarnations of the band over the decades. Plenty of debate as to which version was more musically talented. But this original lineup is/was/never will be unmatched.
Same here. Had to have the absolute worst management AND label to not do SEVERAL live videos of this band back in the day. Far as I know, Live Without a Net is the first one that they officially released.
I have to admit I have never been a fan of Dave's, but he was the ultimate showman and front man indeed... What an incredible show and ride....Eddie as simply amazing.... I've never seen a guitarist so happy to be performing on stage....
This might be the worst DLR performance ever recorded. He was piss drunk doing press before the show. He can't do his kicks. He stumbles around and forgets lyrics. Go watch Oakland 1981 and see what he's like when he's on his game.
@@mjwbulich if you get a chance, watch the Largo 1982 show here on RU-vid. That is the true mighty Van Halen at their best. It’s the complete show and you will not be disappointed. The last great tour they ever did with diamond Dave. Even the 1984 tour wasn’t as good as 82. The animosity was beginning to show on stage.😊
What an incredible performance. A band for the ages... I984 was my first concert at the Coliseum in Phoenix, AZ... after that I saw them several times. They always had incredible energy, and would bring the best out of their fans. Thanks for the memories Ed!
The very First time I saw Van Halen in concert was 1979 at the Angels Stadium in Anaheim CA. They made their grand stage appearance by parachuting out of the sky and landing on the stage, although I'm sure it wasn't them though they were wearing jump suits. It was quite the spectacle!
I'll never forget EVH!!! ONE OF THE BEST Musician's EVER!!!!!!! I can tell how much he loved playing with his bro & son Wolf. He was a kind soul!! Damn!! My heart still aches and hurts! Praying for his family, Valerie B., his true friends and all of us diehard VH fans!!!! R.I.P. Ed. We love you!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
It's funny, when I heard the news that day I was just numb. It wasn't until the next day as I was looking through RU-vid vids that I found some news footage interview of Eddie and a grown up Wolf in the 5150 studio. The affection of father and son brought tears to my eyes. It's like, I couldn't cry for myself but I could for Wolf. I'm eager to hear his solo album whenever he can release it... I think he'll carry on in his dad's footsteps, at least I hope he does. Eddie will live on in his music and our hearts! RIP EVH
I have almost every Van Halen record. I was saddened by David Lee Roth's departure. Sammy Hagar is very nice, but he couldn't replace David. But Van Halen will always be one of the best rock bands in the US. All band members were equally important.
I don't know if you ever saw them with Dave at a live show. After the release of Diver Down he was terrible vocally. It wasn't about the music anymore , it was about him. Sammy didn't have that with them. The shows and the music were spot on and the vocals perfect....even with Gary Cherone the show was better live than with Dave. Don't get me wrong the studio versions are priceless. l
@@Doc_Holiday ...Yes Van Hagar was a better pop group with Sammy! They made killer soft drink commercial soundtracks...👍🏿 Did you freakin hear the crowd in this clip!
Back when they ruled the rock and roll world, at the height of their game. I was a senior in high school.they were my favorite band, along with Journey and Ozzy Osbourne and The Cars
Dear Lord Jesus Christ Lord of Revenge: Please never let me run into David Overstreet and why did you give him that name and he probably thinks David Lee Roth is better than Sammy Hagar when Hagar makes Roth look like a lounge act and ‘Eruption’ is one of the worst things in the history of music and what the hell are these overrated haircuts from an Eighties shampoo bottle talking about in ‘Ice Cream Man’ and what is a 5150 and give me a break. - Chris Chichester, Rochester N.Y.
this is Obviously them in their absolute prime! DLR 's voice is perfect!!! Hell im getting pumped up watching it right now!! You really got me was amazing
I met Eddie in 1983 in Greensboro NC. He was so nice. As soon as I got to engage him in conversation, the road manager comes up and says "Limos here Eddie" Eddie says "wait a minute, I'm talking " puts his two unopened Schlitz malt liquors into his left hand and his cigarette in his mouth and shakes my hand. When he and Michael goes out the backstage door, I hear the crowd waiting outside start screaming. It was then it dawned on me that I had just met Eddie van Halen.
I checked him out when I worked at a Trader Joes in Westchester, CA. 1997. It was right before closing. I bagged his stuff then said something like, "Here you go. Now go practice." He looked at me, smiled and grunted like, "Oh. I get it." I told my manager, "I just checked out Eddie Van Halen." Once he believed me he ran out to the parking lot looking for him. I felt stupid about my failed joke for a couple days. EVH no doubt forgot about it before he hit the parking lot. lol
@@crashburn3292 1 second ago Yup....we've all been there.....I've met a couple famous people kind of unexpectedly and said something I thought (in my mind) was clever....but when it came out of my mouth, all I could think to myself was (Man, I'm an idiot) lol :-)
I was in the parking lot of the Greensboro Coliseum smokin out~ then Cruised High point Rd. My band opened up for Molly Hatchet 2 years later. Fuck Greensboro lol
Well, all I can say is I'm glad I caught them on their way up back in '79. They were still good then; by '83 they were all hype. That's my opinion, anyway.
I had the awesome and wild pleasure of seeing Van Halen with David Lee Roth (the only Van Halen) 3 times!! I've been to dozens and dozens of concerts and never ever seen a crown as explosive as the ones at Van Halen's concerts. RIP EDDIE!!!!!
@@CombatMedic1O He sucks. I saw them at the Pasadena civic back in 1976 before they were even signed (my buddy was a guitarist and he knew about Eddie and wanted me to see them). I was about 15 feet from the stage. I was shocked at how bad Roth's voice was. The bassist Anthony has the great voice and hit all the high notes.
I was one of the VERY fortunate ones to be there!!! Still rockin' & amazed how music has kept US united thru concerts&love for our ROCK ⭐ STARS grateful for the post thank you!! Peace to all 2023!!
Esas eran bandas, verdaderos músicos, se encerraban a inspirarse, componer, luego la producción del disco, la gira de promoción y posteriormente el siguiente disco....qué época!
Was lucky enough to see them in concert in the 90’s with Sammy. They were incredible live. R.I.P. Eddie You are one of a kind guitar player who will Never Ever be forgotten. True talent through and through and your smile watching you do what you loved❤️🎶 God Bless You Man!!!
That image of DLR at the front of the stage with audience packed like sardines, that’s such an ‘80’s crowd. I love it. I remember as soon as opening song starts, you would just jump five feet from the rush of the crowd. Then you think, I can’t breath. You can’t get away with that much nowadays.
The best part: Alex comes off the drums and gives little brother Eddie a massive hug! Priceless! Knowing where they came from as immigrants to forming the largest band in the land! Amazing!
Van Halen was the ultimate party band! Diamond David Lee Roth was the last Rock stud who mixed true showmanship with insane vocals. Eddie was the last guitar God in the line of Hendrix. Record companies have killed off true talent like Van Halen to push corporate created dumbed down artists. Hopefully, in time the cradle will rock once more!
EVH carved an all American music & love how he made the guitar scream & cry! Such a great group that rocks!!! No other rock group can match them! Sadly, this will not repeat again, without EVH. Alex's drumming is awesome too! Every one of them I so talented.
I saw them, Memphis TN, 3rd row Midsouth coliseum, Truly one of the best shows I have ever seen!! Eddie and the His talent will be missed, but will never die... Thanks for sharing this recording.
I was there. I was on my last week of high school at Eisenhower high. I was going into the military in a few months. This was the greatest time in my life. I love you Tracy even though you would not be with me in the future.
Dude I agree 100% this was my jam my triumph TR seven hanging out at the beach or McDonald’s now these fucking asshole kids listen to shitty rap fucking horrible
Im almost 70 And i feel im one of the luckiest man alive, i got to see hendrix, santana in his prime, i saw deep purple, led zeppelin, kiss, van halen, Yngwie with alcatrazz, vinnie moore, frank gambale with corea and many many more, i still go to concerts every chance i get but theres not really much to see after you see van halen, yngwie and gambale No one can top those guys!
I was there, as a young 21 year old man, witnessing a very gifted, trendsetting guitarist having a great night, and a very intoxicated lead singer being the arrogant show-off that he was. RIP EVH!!
If I was the lead singer of Van Freaking Halen as we said in the 80's I would be arrogant as well. How could you not be? Free women, drugs, everything and everybody kissing your ass.
I was there as well. The whole band was pretty drunk. I'd seen them 3 times prior to this and they were a mess on this night. Didn't help to have a 2 hour wait after a flawless Scorpions set.
