@@SapmiNeiden No to anything Gary: record? No -it sucked. Tour? No (even though I saw it at House of Blues Orlando). Continue with this fiasco? HELL NO.
If you ever watch Extreme live, Gary Cherone is just like that on stage. He always moves like aerobic athlete, can't just stand still, moves his hands and twists his body. It's just don't really match in a Van Halen concert, hence why you said he was looked like a VH contest idol winner.
@Daryl Wheeler You're right. Extreme is a funk/funky-metal band. If you listen to their music, you can imagine their vocalist must always be moving around like a maniac, and the other 3 members also can't keep quiet. Van Halen is a different kettle of fish for Cherone. VH vocalist must have a charisma and control on the stage.
David Lee Roth was very good. Sammy Hagar was great. This guy can't hold a candle to either of them. That is potentially the worst rendition of jump that I've ever heard.
gary played the old songs better than roth could on the reunion. people hate changed...i loved this lineup. wish everyone could have given it a chance.
I've seen Van Halen in concert ten times and with all the different lineups. The concert with Cherone was great because the setlist covered the best of their ENTIRE catalog, and Eddie looked like he was enjoying himself for the first time in years.
@Thomas Cavanaugh I doubt it. The album he did with them did not do well and I think their record label let them know how unhappy they were. Some of the tunes written for the second record with Cherone got reworked for Cherone's later project called Tribe of Judah. There are some good songs on that record, like "Thanks for Nothing" and "East of Paradise" -- those were much heavier than most of the material on "Van Halen III" and I think could have made for a great second VH record with him. Personally, I think the major mistake in VHIII was having Mike Post as the producer.
No the mistake was letting Eddie produce the album. Mike Post really didn't do much. Ed was in no shape to be producing an album. If there had been a real producer on the album I guarantee it would have been awesome.
They picked Cherone for a reason. the guy can sing. of course its weird when he's singing Roth's or Hagar's songs but the guy can sing and that's why they picked him.
Yes, he CAN sing alright BUT, to me he sounds too screechy squeaky for Van Halen! Just my personal opinion, you'd need more baritone there, he seems pitchy all the time. Funny, but Michael Bolton could've done a better job, don't you think? Also, Gary's overdressed for the part, he looks like a nerd among rockers. Just imagine Ralph Macchio with Guns 'n Roses, get the picture? 😂 I like Gary's voice don't get me wrong, but I think he's better off singing his own songs, should've stayed with Extreme, i loved him in Extreme.
I'm surprised how much I like Gary's performance here. He just goes for it; totally uninhibited. If I saw this video in 1998 I'd probably be more critical, but Gary's vocals are on point, which is more than I can say for DLR when he rejoined VH in 2007. And I'm a huge DLR fan.
False, sir. Dlr carried them throughout the 2007 tour , where Ed was still half a mess…. He sang I’ll Wait just fine , which is waaay more taxing than Jump. All opinions of course . So we’re either both right , or both wrong …but since I’m a genius , I’m gonna go with you are wrong .
@@Beepbopboh Yep. He was still good in '07. Saw two shows, both good. Last show of tour in Grand Rapids was the best he ever sounded live, to me. Ever. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y0VO5d01uYE.html&ab_channel=SilverStallionVideos
Damn, loved this man!. Van Halen fan here, I just want to say Gary Cherone is one hell of boss performer!🤘 Eddie made the right choice by choosing him, He's such a talented singer, songwriter and performer....His stage presence is captivating when you see him perform live. Saw Extreme concert and he owns the stage with some very cool antics....You also need to watch the "Freddie Mercury tribute in 1992" where Gary and Extreme played all the famous Queen Hits and He owned the stage I've never seen any frontman or band, the way He captivate and pumped up the crowd into joyful hysteria jumping and singing along is such an epic joy to watch, watched it 20x times already....they owned the stage and did the best tribute and performance that even Metallica and Guns and Roses are also there to pay tribute to Freddie, those bands paled in comparison to how Gary and Extreme performed. That's simply the most epic tribute I've seen by an artist. Gary is the Man!...cheers.😄
Really sucks man, I’m 21 and I never got to see him live damn I wish I group up in the 80s, I believe I was born in the wrong generation all these great musicians dying and not being able to see the full band perform. I’ve only seen Metallica, Cheap Trick , Heart , Bryan Adams, and Billy Idol . Was gonna see Rolling Stones and Billy Joel but thanks to covid, idc about getting I just wanna see them before there gone .
Gary Cherone rules, i personally appreciate a lot his voice and his personality on stage. Not to mention, if Eddie VH wanted him in studio to write and record together, he must have heard something some of you don't get..
get? I think you need to take inventory of what the musical landscape of 1998 was and where VH did or didn't fit into it (they didn't fit into it). This is as odd now as it was then.
I saw this tour in San Diego, CA. It was a different Van Halen, no doubt. The audience still had a great time, the band sounded awesome and they were a tight unit. I don't think too many people walked away disappointed.
He’s a fucking great guy, and talented. Met them in Hawaii this year(98) My band Sunburn Opened for them. I like that he sang it all, David and The Sammy era. Love ya Gary, miss ya Eddie
Cherone with VH: "A" for effort. "F" for results. Square peg/round hole. Still worth watching if nothing else to see people living free and having fun pre-cell phones and lockdowns.
I give him a solid C for effort. His stage antics were awkward and poor. He’d get a better letter grade for effort if he worked on his chemistry with the band. Even DLR is a better vocalist on his worst day.
I don't care what anyone says I say Van Halen with Gary 3 times and each show was F#cking awesome. If VHIII was Rocking and I have heard a couple of the songs from what would have been their 2nd album with Gary a lot of people would have loved Gary more and excepted him!! he was the perfect inbetween guy to sing both Dave and Sammy Era songs.
I didn't know I could like this version of Van Halen any less till I saw this video. I'm surprised the Germans didn't start another war after this show.😮
You watch this and realize how great of a band Van Halen was. Here they are, touring with their least popular singer and behind their worst album at a festival in Europe, and the place is still going nuts.
I saw this tour, and while it was nice to hear the old Dave era songs live again I was embarrassed for Cherone. Vocally he was strong, this video does not do him justice, but his stage antics were cringe worthy. He had big shoes to fill, and I think he just tried too hard to fill them.
Couldn't agree more. I just don't get him as a choice for VH. Cringe worthy is the best description. His flailing about, tall and lanky, horrible voice, etc, etc
By all accounts this was one of the tours where everyone got along and the party lifestyle was under reasonable control. I think they sounded great and Cherone was in a situation that no one wanted to be in, because you can’t please everyone and be all things to everybody. He did it as well as anyone else would have IMHO.
Eddie looks like an Ooompa Looompa. A really, really, talented one. The only other guy that I can think of that smiles more when performing, would be Ozzy. I think that's what I miss most, is watching his enjoyment, entertaining the shit out of people.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 trying to find in my comment where I said I'd take Cherone over Sammy or Dave. Guess what....its not there cause I never said said that. All that has grown on me is a stupid comment from a dipshit that can't read.
Really cool I had not seen before a live song with Gary he did it great, so fresh version, great deal the three of those singers, too short Cherone’s tenure.
I don’t give a F what anyone says. Cherone is legit! VH had been on top for so many years and music was changing at the time. VH couldn’t handle another singer change due to timing. Is what it is! I must say Eddies tone was legit here! 🤘🏻
@Daryl Wheeler You make a good point, but David Lee Roth will always be the real Van Halen. As far as I’m concerned without Dave in the band, Van Halen was just an Eddie Van Halen solo act, but Dave is what makes it Van Halen!
@@nt3523 the VH saga definitely breeds drama! 😂 I always get crap for saying 1984 is the best DLR record. And probably my favourite overall. But the Sammy years were just better all around. They became an actual original band during that time. Eddie never played better than the F.U.C.K./Balance era. Just my opinion of course. But I can agree with your statement.
Wow what a crowd!!! Bring it Germany! Gary had a great set of pipes. I just didnt see any chemistry with ED. At this point Ed was struggling with addiction and his marriage. Just wasnt a good time in his life. The sad thing is the true pros lived all those painful private moments in the spotlight. RIP KING EDWARD
I disagree, respectfully. I think Eddie took Hendrix to another level - and I think Nuno built on Eddie's style and took it to yet another level but the 'quantum leap' - comparable to Jimi showing us what 'else' could be done with the instrument - is happening with Jeff Beck..
