I’d like to suggest you hit the performances from the movie “The last waltz”. The movie immortalizes The Band’s final concert with all their musical guests including Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and many more. It also gives the history of The Band (The Band is the bands name lol). The movie of the concert and interviews was directed by Martin Scorsese.
He played with many musicians throughout the years. The Band, Jeff Beck. B.B. King John Lee Hooker, just to name a few. So glad you are doing some Van. So much to listen to. As always fellas great reaction. Appreciate you 🙏
I've been listening to Van ever since "Gloria" with Them back in the sixties. Such a talented songwriter and dynamic performer! Every song is fine. For a different vibe try "Into the Mystic." Thanks guys.
@@michaelkeefe8494 I like Patti Smith. I heard Jimi's version of Gloria first, then Van then Eric Burdon and finally some black blues legends at Antone's in Austin doing it. The rumors are Van Morrison lifted it from some early R & B and changed the name and some lyrics. I'm sure how the internet works, some more of that story emerges. Lots of songs we thought were originals were lifted from old black blues legends without copyright protection.
Thanks for liking the string section's coming in! That's my teacher playing violin there, to Van's left. Nathan Rubin - don't rest in peace, be fully active and ecstatic the way you helped me to be by being such a kind teacher! 5:00
With the Caledonian Soul Orchestra. He made “it’s too late to stop now”. Probably one of the best live albums ever. It’s still frigging expensive to buy even today.
Van Morrison is the deepest hole you can crawl down, matched only by Dylan & Joni Mitchell in terms of lyrical content. Van started in a show band (basically a big band scene) in Ireland, his home country. He had solos where he played sax on his back on stage, ever the showman. This band was the Caledonia Soul Orchestra, but he's had many bands. He is also a multi instrumentalist. Funny story I read, one of his drummers said he would signal the drummer the meter using hand signals, one show he was motioning to slow the tempo, it got so slow the drummer said Van was gripping his hand like he was grabbing something, the drummer didn't know that sign. when the concert finished the drummer asked him backstage what did he want with that signal, Van laughed at him and said I was saying to you, you can't go any slower I got you by the balls now! Van has always been the man.
Van The Man blasting Caravan is always an amazing reminder of his talent, "Caravan" is a song full of gypsies, travel, and community. It's a song about the open road and music, a general celebration of freedom. Van always has a message in all his songs. You should give his Album 'IT's TOO LATE TOO STOP NOW' a song-by-song listen. It's one of the great Live Albums that captures Van at his best., i
As you are clearly a fan, like me, a little treat for you. You may have seen it before but even so... bloody awesome. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TmkS-ndc7Qk.html&pp=ygUhdmFuIG1vcnJpc29uIGxpdmUgaW4gYmVsZmFzdCAxOTc5 ENJOY. YW
So glad you did this live version. It's a pure Van arrangement with a multitude of instruments played by great musicians. Everyone requests the Last Waltz version but this one is far superior IMHO, no offense to the Band who are also brilliant, but they race through the song and it's meant to be a slow vibe like this.
And there's another rabbit hole. So much to love in Vans music. He basically had a different band every time he toured, but most people would agree, this was hands down the best. The Caledonian Soul Orchestra.
Vans songs often refer to the RADIO. He grew up in Dublin at a time when the Shortwave radio brought him inspiration. His skat singing often imatates the noises he would hear.
The strings must be thrilled playing with Van. Check it out his Celtic Ray and imagine yourself on a boat sailing between Ireland Scotland England & Wales.
Van Morrison possibly the most prolific songwriter, musician, singer from Ireland, originally he played with a band called them, his solo work is astonishing I saw him live once and it was non stop until he walked off stage, he never did an encore.
In 1974 I had 2nd row seats for van at the felt forum which is the small theater inside Madison square garden... we thought it would be this large band ...but instead it was just Van and a piano 🎹..still a great show....
Van called this traveling group The Caledonia Soul Orchestra. He used them, along with his normal band, for the 1973-74 tour. A double live album from this tour, TOO LATE TO STOP NOW, is essential listening and is regarded as one of the best live albums from that era. I absolutely love Van Morrison, and this period of his career was magnificent. Thanks for this one! 👏
Yes, essential, so so good, and the sound engineering = top quality on most of the songs. It’s like you are THERE in the hall. Why can’t all ‘live’ albums sound so pristine?
give Into The Mystic or Moondance or Tupelo Honey or Wild Nights or Brown Eye Girl a listen By Van Morrison all great songs thanks and keep doing what you do Peace out
This is from his 3td solo album "Moondance," and incredible album worthy of a deep dive. The concert film/documentary The Last Waltz, directed by Martin Scorsese documenting the final live performance of the original line-up of The Band. They played their hits sbd brought up a bunch of musicians Thales recorded with or were just friends with the version of this song is far superior. The film is an absolute masterpiece and mandatory viewing for a wider musical education. The Band, with Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, The Staples Singers, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins and some bonus footage with other legends. Van Morrison is one of the few contemporaries of The Beatles who is adamant that he wasn't at all inspired by them, but instead by jazz and RnB. His 2nd album "Astral Weeks" is another masterpiece, but very different. Recorded with him on vocals and acoustic guitar in one booth, and a small jazz ensemble he met on the day in the main room. Recorded in two days, plus one more for overdubs. It alludes to other music, but mostly because of its spontaneity, it sounds like nothing else. Kind of a folk jazx.
Van has such soul!!! Thank you, with love, Maralyn in Virginia 🩵🎼 If you have not heard Van’s “Did Ye Get Healed,” PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS SONG- it is jazz bliss!❤️
He's been aroud a long time."Gloria" is a rock song written by Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, and originally recorded by Morrison's band Them in 1964
He sings "Turn up your radio" . The radio was a HUGE influence on Van, and us all back in the day. He grew up in Ireland where even if you could get to a record store they would not have Chuck Berry. So the radio was the way. Anouther of his many radio songs is "IN THE DAYS BEFORE ROCK AN ROLL".
Van Morrison is 🔥He is actually from Belfast, Northern Ireland. "The Belfast Cowboy" is not for the "faint-hearted he has effortlessly slipped between genres, during his half-century career. And most certainly He's one of my fav's...However, I'd like to continue to add new artists to your playlist, so if you're interested, I'd like to introduce you to "Simon and Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson (Audio)" this duet has some of the best harmonies, and they are wonderful storytellers. Folk rock legends for sure
Keep the Van coming! Sorry I can only like this once. Van is not only a great singer and songwriter but he doesn't get enough credit as a bandleader. He really populates his band with amazing people and let's them loose. He's still touring to sold out shows and as good as ever. We've seen him in LA and Chicago in the last few years.
Van the Man, the Belfast Cowboy. You can't go wrong with my Northern Irish troubadour. Try "And It Stoned Me" "Into the Mystic" or "Jackie Wilson Said" next.
You might watch Van Morrison Live on Cyprus Avenue. It was a celebration of his 70th BD in Belfast. It's an hour and a half, so too long for here, but you would like it.
This is just part of the video that Van did called "It's too late to stop now. You should try to watch that whole video sometime as it has some really great theater that Van loves to create in addition to his music. Up on Cyprus Avenue is another part of this longer video and the bass player keeps asking if they are gonna bring out the shot glasses. I know the longer version might be too long to review formally, but you both will enjoy it as Van truly did exibit a soulful quality in his music. As I said, his dream when he was a young boy was to emulate Ray Charles.
Great choice and artist. Van Morrison has a long list of great songs - "Moondance", "Tupelo Honey", "Wild Night" etc. Van has such a unique sound - no one else is like him that I know of. Thanks guys for reacting to this one!
This was part of Too Late to Stop Now Tour...this band toured together for about a year and called themselves Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Many of these band members played with Van on and off over the years, some more than others. David Hayes and John Platana still play with Van regularly. Van was known to always change up his band and the musicians he worked with to change up his sound and explore different genres.
Van has so many great songs. One of my faves is 'Cleaning Windows', a story of an average working man, loving life, looking forward to making music on the weekends in small clubs. Just such a great song. Along with Into the Mystic, Brown Eyed Girl, Caravan, and on and on. I also love how he always calls out and recognizes the bandmates. A truly cool guy. Just don't get on the wrong side of him.
Gentlemen. Dig deep into Van Morrison's 1974 live album 'It's Too Late to Stop Now'. Possibly the greatest live album ever recorded. Truly live. No studio overdubs or re-recording. It was recorded with the same musicians you just saw in gigs in the US and the UK. I read that Van is such a perfectionist that he wouldn't allow one of his most popular songs, Moondance, to be included on the album because of one wrong guitar note! Seriously brilliant album from an artist at the height of his powers.
He called them The Caledonia Soul Orchestra - the tour was about three months. The original album "It's Too Late to Stop Now" (the title comes from the last line of his song "Into The Mystic", which is also on this live album) was released in 1974, then an updated DVD was released in 2016 with performances from additional nights of that tour.
That was cool, as good or maybe even better than The Last Waltz version. Days Like This is a real tasty number in released in 1995. His early music from the 1970’s gets most of the attention but arguably he was at his peak musically in the 1990’s and 2000’s.
Van has a huge catalog. In a similar thought to you playing Jimi’s “Little Wing” last, Van deserves some care. Start with the “Astral Weeks” album as a reference point although you could go a little earlier. He has had many sidemen through the years. He writes, arranges and produces his albums, writes his own horn arrangements, plays guitar, saxophone, harmonica, etc. He has been going strong for more than 50 years.
Yes! Van the man. I love this dude. I had a feeling you would enjoy Van’s music. You can tell that he really values the talent of his fellow musicians. The studio version of Tupelo Honey would be a good follow-up to this song. In my opinion it showcases his voice and song writing even more. Thanks! You two bros are the best!
You said, "He sings so cool". I think it's just that he feels the music and he uses his voice as another instrument to fit in between the lyrics he's singing. Sometimes the lyrics is the instrument. Hard to describe. How about, he just feels the music more than most and releases what he's feeling.
I like and appreciate Van Morrison, but never as much as I did as a teenager. When he sang "Brown Eyed Girl", I was so happy to be acknowledged. Most songs mentioned blonde blue eyed girls 😊
