The idea is to buy low and sell high. Buying low, however, is only half the battle; you must also know when to sell

When it comes to finding a decent public bathroom downtown I like going to hotel lobbies. Hotels always have random people entering and exiting them so no one will call you out if you just casually waltz in to use the bathroom, unlike, in say, a coffee shop. Supermarkets are all legally required to have public bathrooms as well, though they can sometimes be in awkward places, like in the storage area in the back.

Hack for staying cool: I’ve been going to the library a lot recently to do work and it’s air conditioned! They advertise themselves as a place to escape the heat so if you want to escape the heat, be productive and not have to spend money on coffee or food, the library is a good place to go

Compass Card Life Hack (additional): You can set up Auto-Load with your credit card so you don’t have to load the Compass Card every time it’s low on funds. That way you’ll never have the awkward *taps cards* “insufficient funds” moment on a bus.

Too good to go is a big thing here in France so I'm happy to know I'll still be able to use it in Vancouver :) And the "no alcohol outside" rule is good to know because as a French person I'm used to walking around the city with beers

My contribution is also Compass Card related. If you keep losing your Compass Card like I used to, go to the TransLink BC Customer Service at Chinatown Station ( it's moving to the Waterfront Station this days, not sure if they already moved though) and get an alternative Compass. I bought a Keychain Compass, but they also have a bracelet thing and maybe some other options.

If you cycle or ride a scooter download or memorize the Vancouver bike path system map… since our car roads are very trafficked and dangerous, I try to only stick on the designated cycling streets (some are also much quieter)

A Vancouver tip ive found after my move from Calgary: Depending on the type of street parking you could pay $1/hr to $8/hr. The gray parking meters with the old designs tend to be on the cheaper side. And if you see newer ones or big advertisement on them like "Scan QR code to pay here" they tend to be the $5-$8 per hour parking!

The two times I visited Vancouver from the UK I found it confusing that the SkyTrain went underground for portions! My lifehack is if your employer has showers, or there is a gym very close to work, buy a good bike and cycle to/from work 3-4 times per week. Maintains reasonable cardio fitness and saves a fortune in transportation fees (less bike maintenance costs)
@AdamJBell
@AdamJBell Год назад
Genius! I did the same at my last job, biked in, hit the gym (sometimes 😅) then used the showers when needed. Said lots that year !

Ah that's why people still use the coins for parking! I never knew that as I don't drive here :P. But my Vancouver hack is whenever you take a SkyTrain (Canada Line) to Templeton area, particularly to McArthur Glen outlet store for shopping, since it will take you more than 1.5 hour (Translink time for charging a user again the next tap), you'd better take a day pass which would be around $11 and that will be cheaper than tapping in with your Compass Card that would be around $2.45 and then as you tap back in from that area if you are beyond 1.5 hours out it would be a single fare just like from VYR airport which will cost more than $11 in total than a day pass.

@pamelafrancis8131
@pamelafrancis8131 Год назад
Ha! They are not "streets" they are "avenues"! "Streets" belong to Vancouver's suburbs. Just say, numbered avenues run East/West and named streets run North/South (almost 99% of the time unless you are below the avenues - hence Cornwall and Point Grey Road if you are on the West Side). Doesn't work Downtown however....

REAL LOCAL LIFEHACK: grocery stores, and I mean the true vegetable stand type ones, usually have a clearance veggie section where you can get a whole bag of mixed veg at steep bargains like $1.50. Availability subject to store and time of day/week. The stores I have found this at include top 10 produce in kits, kin's farm market in kerrisdale, joti's no frills at city hall. I'm sure there are lots out there tho

With the situation in East Hastings street in downtown Vancouver, that would be the last city on earth that I would consider moving to. Vancouver has become a dangerous unsafe dystopia and a hotspot for the mentally ill and drug addicted. This is due to unsound policies drummed up by misguided politicians who were voted into office by misguided voters. I doubt that there is a way back. Beware those considering moving to Vancouver. Its not what it used to be. A far cry. All thats left is really to cry about what this city was and will probably never be again. Shocking.
@winnietam6203
@winnietam6203 Год назад
Those are huge generalizations, I’m offended because I live here in Vancouver and I don’t feel unsafe and I’m not crying over it…
