My definition of 'home made' is made from scratch. Nothing wrong with using packet mixes to save time but I think most people appreciate it when you've put all the ingredients together yourself (without the extra chemicals) and produced something as mouth watering as your vanilla sheet cake Sara that could possibly include home grown lemons and eggs too. It's good old fashioned comfort! I really enjoy your channel so many thanks and keep it going!!
1,000 thumbs up for you Sarah. When you took a bite of that little piece of heaven I was literally salivating!!! Will definitely make this cake. Thanks ever so much for your wonderful recipes. Regards from Madrid, Spain.
this video was recommended to me on youtube and it's the first time i watch an "everyday food" video. i have to say this woman is so sweet and likable, immediately liked her character :) cake looks delicious, definitely going to try it! greetings from germany
Sam Dian I agree. If someone made me a cake, even if it was from a mix, I would consider it homemade because of the time and effort it took for them to make it.
Carolina Esquivel Your English is very good. Brava! It is "I want to tell you thank you," or an easier way would be, "I want to thank you for ..." English is very confusing to learn!
I LOVE to watch you cook or bake. You have taught me soooo much! And I don't even feel guilty about eating the good stuff afterwards. Thanks for all your wonderful tips. You make me smile with your happy vibes :)
i don't think they're home made if they come from a box, BUT scratch cakes are alittle more dense and i like lite and fluffy cakes. my favorite box mix is Duncan hines. Although i have found a few scratch cakes that are moist and fluffy. Very few. Cake looks tasty I'll think i might try this one. have a good day and thanks
Making an already mixed cake doesn't qualify as homemade cake. What makes it homemade is the effort of measuring out the flour sugar leaving milk and eggs, not tearing open a box and dumping into a bowl, i ❤️ your work Sara!
I love making desserts from scratch but there is nothing wrong with using cake mix or “box mix” they still both taste good to me. Sometimes it is easier and less expensive for a lot of people.
I did, on one occasion as I was pressed for time , doctor up a mix to make a chocolate poundcake. I added extra eggs, sour cream, butter and cocoa powder. When asked if it was homemade, I said, "It was definitely made at home".
Hey Sarah can you subsitute a vanilla frosting for the lemon cream cheese frosting? My mom and I both agree that cream cheese frosting is a little bit too much.
I love to bake cakes, and my texture preferences mean I love oil cakes! Plus, they're simple to make. I like that they almost have more moisture, as they sit on the counter. I love the flavour of butter, and used to melt it in place of oil for some recipes, but found the cake would firm up too much.
So if I sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa, and salt for my 11 year old and tell him all he has to do on the day he wants to bake a cake for his dad's birthday is add the butter and egg, you would consider that not made from scratch because I gave my son all the measured ingredients put together in a ziplock bag to cut done on mess and to eliminate error. My point has been made. Box cake mix just eliminates the human error that ruins baking when you scoop the flour right from the container instead of pouring it into the measuring cup like you should to prevent dryness, or it takes away the mess from sifting or the mistake of using a liquid measure for dry ingredients and vice versa. Read the ingredients on a box mix. It has flour, dry flavoring, and a leavening agent. The difference is butter is not creamed with sugar because that is already in the mix. The scratch cake is better because of fresh ingredients and of course the love and care that goes into it, again, depending on the baker. Why must women fight and defend madness and limiting behavior, which keeps us divided and so preoccupied that we aren't focused where we should be which is on raising kids who aren't continuing this madness in the form of racism, classism, ageism, and sexism. I just feel it is all correlated with why women get 3/4 pay for every dollar a man makes. We waste our thinking resources and problem solving skills on making brownies for the school bake sale from scratch while a man buys it from a bakery or grocery store so he can go focus on closing another deal. If "from scratch" is a requirement he would have an assistant do it before wasting his resources, while a woman would feel less than if she didn't do it herself because of this madness thinking. Here's a better question instead of "do you prefer box mix or from scratch." Do you prefer stock in Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. Buy the cake mix from the company or store that's going to pay you a higher dividend. I wonder if that is Martha Stewart Omnimedia. #MicDrop
I guess made from scratch means it's not a good cake if you didn't scratch your head trying to remember great grandma's recipe for it. Good thing we have shortcuts like the Internet and the Everday Foods channel on RU-vid. Here's a new madness question to keep women divided. Are you a better cook if your recipes are filed away in an ear marked book with the butter stained pages, or laminated into a 3 ring binder, or if you rely on recipes from the Internet, Pinterest, & Food Shows? Let's think about this dumb question until election time. #Rise
That looks incredible! Nommy nommy. And absolutely no way is a box mix homemade! As Henrique Zane said in his comment its Homebaked, but definitely not homemade. I know here in Northern Ireland, the majority of people wouldnt dream of using a box mix for anything in baking really. We pretty much do everything from scratch here when baking. Even in our shops, the baking aisle doesn't have a great deal of box mix items. There are some obviously, but they aren't a big thing here.....thankfully, heehee. There is nothing quite like homemade. Great recipe Sarah. Lee xx
I always do eggs separately for the shells but it really helps if that freak thing should happen.. I also had one egg in my lifetime that was bad..black inside.. and 2 eggs that had pieces of blood in them.. yeah.. so good idea to check them out first before ruining a lot of good ingredients! 😮🍰 This cake looks yummy!🍰😝
i cant find the video of that lemon cream cheese frosting that looks oh so fine! anyone know what video it's in? also, i dont think premade cake is considered homemade because it's not handcrafted by you!
Seat sarah. Im from Denmark and Gere we actually have something called dream cake! Its the name of it, you should tre making it. It is a vanilla-base like in this video. On top is a thick crunchy and gooey layer of coconutty caramel goodness! The Danish name is "Drømmekage" and is probably one of the most popular "everyday" cakes.
Ohboy. Best 'Don't forget to crack eggs in a separate bowl' story is the time I was making a fritattta, and cracked an egg directly in the bowl. It was just BLOOD. Yech.
Could you tell me where to find the recipe for the cake and icing. When I choose the link it takes me to what looks like a Martha Stewart web page, so are we supposed to search for the recipe and if so did you double the cream cheese icing when you made it.
I love box mix cakes because my 3yrs old daughter loves baking so each time we use only 1/3 of the box plus the cake will still taste good even if she over mix it or add more water by accident🙈😹😹we turn the cake mix into cookies sometimes or even pineapple upside down cupckaes
I think it is not homemade bs it is also not store bought it is simply a shortcut that people take to save the time and miss. Any way thanks Sarah for this great recipe I can't wait to make it for mom she will absolutely love it I'm sure. Thanks again :)
home made from a mix? HERESY! That said, Its hard to beat boxed mixes except on specialty cakes like Carrot cake. Question for Sarah, Do you consider it a home made pumpkin pie if you use either Canned pumpkin? Packaged pie crust?
Did you know box mixes used to require even less than they do now? No egg, etc. But it wasn't popular, because with so few steps, baking the cake didn't "feel like baking" So the box mixes put less in, making more steps, and people liked it better. People like to think they're making a cake when they use boxes, but really, it's already made, they're just putting it in the oven.
I've been looking for the same cake pan that was used in this video (and other videos from this channel) anywhere, does anyone know where I can get these? The ones I have currently are darker and non-stick and the outsides of the cake are already burnt but the center is still uncooked when poked with a toothpick.
I don't love store bought cakes, and I don't say that I made it, because it was in a packet, and all you had to do was mix. I like making cakes and slices from scratch because you know what you are giving yourself and other people.
I don't consider it a homemade unless I make it from scratch. However, if I make cookies using a cake mix with other ingredients then I feel like I made a batch of homemade cookies 🍪 😀
