VANLIFE in the Extreme COLD

Surviving in self built Ford Transit campervan as I’ve finally found some extreme snow camping temperatures below -30c in the far north of the Nordic Winter. On the drive I hit below -30c for the first time with was so cold the engine starting to freeze and loose temperature. So much so I could use the heater. But after the Grille cover was on the Van’s Cabin was warm again. The Hab part of my van / home is heated with a Chinese Diesel heater. I make my way from Kiruna in Sweden over to Finland and get to see the Northern Lights and a Moose.
For those interested The “Thermal” in a @PulsarVision Axion 2 XG35. Which I have obtained the appropriate export licenses required from the UK government to take it out of the UK.

I’ve keep it’s on for the last few weeks now. The reason I say -20 or -25 in the video is I have a digital temperature gauge on my dashboard, which gives me the live number read out and I noticed getting towards -20 is when I see abnormality over normal engine temp. In the 80s i travelled to North Albera -20 was a break, many weeks -40 to lows of -54. Had to have circulation heat on 24 /7 , if my van sat, i worked in a loader with heat but never got above 5c in the cab all day, I did sleep some nights in the van, but back then I had only a small direct vent propane heater, in never held much better than 10 or 12 c , i had a military mummy bag and a goose down down bed cover, i remember waking at 3 am having to pee, bitter sweet memories, but in life you've got to go out and live it all, my entire winter best may have been 15 C in my friends log cabin, with wood stove stuifed day and night, good video, it brought back old memories 👍

I remember a January day 37 years ago, I had worked all day in Oslo, and in the afternoon I started with my Toyota Celica north through Sweden. It was bitterly cold throughout Sweden. On E4 in the far north at night, the sea fog came and settled on the road. It was so icy that the wheels spun in 4th gear. Enter Finland. Had driven almost in one, at a very high speed, tired as hell. The more tired I got, the more I increased my speed so as not to fall asleep. On winter nights, when it is close to -40, everything is grey. Sees a slight turn, and follows the road. Sees a gray spot on the road. Why is there a gray spot on the road? Don't get it, because I'm too tired, not until the lights hit the eyes of the three reindeer in the middle of the road. I'm going too fast to slow down, but flipping the light switch on and off makes the reindeer decide which way to go, and I drive the opposite way. Fortunately, they ran the right way into the forest. When I look around, there are probably several thousand animals on both sides of the road.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures Год назад
Yeah, the reindeer certainly usually don’t move until you get by the close and they do blend in pretty well with snow-covered roads even with lights
@protestagain
@protestagain Год назад
Another time, with a Ford Capri, a winter time between Christmas and New Year, at night. Coming over a crest at 100 mph. The road is five meters wide in summer. Now in winter it is narrower. There are three reindeer facing me. I consider, I can drive out. Know that it is actually very nice to drive out on the right. On the left side there is an upward slope. At the very last minute, one of the reindeer moves a few decimetres, and I choose to drive between them, while giving even more speed to over 100 mph. I don't think they realized what disappeared between them, but I'm sure there was reindeer hair attached to the car on both sides. I have calculated that at the speed I was driving at the time I would be able to drive the Nürburgring in less than ten minutes, and this journey was 80 miles.
@protestagain
@protestagain Год назад
@@MispronouncedAdventures A cousin of mine, he was also young and stupid. Driving as he had the devil after him, going over crests at stupid speed. There were at least 14 reindeer standing, at least dead after he hit them. He said he had to turn on the windshield wiper because of the blood. Did you know, there wasn't any speed limits in Finland 50 years ago.

Love seeing how you and the van handle these extreme conditions plus the light towers, the aurora, all fascinating. FYI, a baby moose is called a mooselet and a little known fact is that moose are born hairless on their undersides meaning that mothers must scoop the mooselets up with their antlers when traversing deep snow to prevent frostbite. For this reason the moose is the only mammal known to have a teat between it’s shoulder blades in order that the young can suckle while riding. David Attenborough told me this down the pub.

I use Liqui Moly Mos2 10w40 engine oil with molybdenum disulphide and I also added an anti-wear additive from Liqui Moly Certec and, like all Terrain tires and Terrain Mud tires, it measures 205-70-15 and therefore I use gasoline additives that are used to clean the fuel line! Hi Alex, have you thought about using the bobilvans kits to pre-heat the engine? E.g. by using their underfloor heating kit and connect it to the engine coolant? Not sure if it works but it would certainly be interesting. Somehow it would be neat to get rid of the redundancy and be able to heat air/water and engine with a diesel air heater or the engine.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures Год назад
The principal is certainly there. The power of the bobil van is heat exchanger only 2.1kw whist might engine pre heater is 5kw. But it would certainly heat it up, just take longer. I think more of the issue would be flow and the restrictions as the bobil uses of far smaller diameter piping in. I think I would prefer to do it the other way around and use the engine and the engine preheater as a primary source and some like a SureCal Calorifier. In this environment, I prefer having a redundant system as a backup.
@chblabah
@chblabah Год назад
@@MispronouncedAdventures right, that makes sense. Also, the drawback is that for heating a cold car - e.g. if you're not living in it, it's overkill to use the airheater to heat the engine. On the other side, I've got the bobilvans hybrid, and by integrating the engine coolant, through an additional heat exchanger on the engine side. It would be a very flexible setup. You could even use the hot water in your boiler to heat the engine. The power source could then be either electricity (Bobilvans Hybrid) or the Diesel Air heater.

Well you’re wrong if you trying to say the tyre are not legal in winter. The tyres are perfectly legal in the Nordics winter ( + North American and central European ) . As they 3PMSF rated which meets Nordics countries winter requirements for tyres. And whilst I do see most of the foreign vehicles up here using the same model of tyres this year i did see quite a few of the local, particularly in Norway vehicles use them as well. Other Nordic friends of my have no issues with A/T or A/S tyres in heavy vans and use them. “All terrain tyres” is just word used by companies to describe loosely a tyres properties. I use a BFgoodrich KO2 Oh course there was no scientific basis or relevants for all brake test. We just wanted to have some fun on a empty bit of road, get up to a set speed and slam the anchors on to see how well heavy vans ( 3.5t vans ) stopped in those conditions. Rather well I too would be pissed at irresponsible foreigners they definitely some unprepared ones. I’m sure your a far more experienced Nordic driver and live up there. I only have 2 nordic winters and around 8000-9000 miles worth of driving experience on those middle of winter roads, but in that experience, daily to daily drivability, traction, cornering, and breaking has never been a problem. However I choose to leave the Nordics when it starts to warm up and temperatures return to near zero as I would prefer studs then.

@@MispronouncedAdventures Sorry champ.... I am very sure that I am right. But I am not sure if I shall laugh or cry of your statements .....the latter seems most likely. My nearly 70 years of experience from living up here in the Arctic can hardly match your handful of days as tourist in Scandinavia....??? Well....well... well..... I have only criss-crossed Scandinavia (in all seasons) so many times that I have no idea of how many that would be..... You see .....your statements only show that you are rather clueless and can only convince another clueless. It is not only the manufacturers that use the term "all terrain tyres" .... you said it yourself..... That is also what I reacted on. I had no information which classification your tyres were under (which in this case is irrelevant). Nordic winter tyres has totally different properties than summer tyres. Those properties are not possible to combine in one and the same tyre. Personally I never compromise with tyres. They are the only thing that gives me the needed control and contact with the road. I always drive with top of the line studded tyres. That has multiple times saved me from situations that otherwise would ended rather bad. I am not playing with my own or others lives on the road. Your "all terrain tyres" are certainly not anything close to a Nordic winter tyre. Show me any Scandinavian test that has your type of tyres figuring in their tests of winter tyres ....and even more unlikely performs good.....!!! Maybe there is a reason that your type of tyres are not even anything to consider as a test object in the category of Nordic winter tyres......??? The 3PMSF standard is just a joke. Your claim that "....3PMSF meets the requirements of Nordic winter tyres..." is laughable and only show that you are completely lost. In reality you actually turns things upside down. Here is why: The 3PMSF standard is something EU in their eager to standardise the world have made up just like their standardisation of how straight a cucumber must be......but about a billion times more serious dangerous and stupid. Specially since EU has made up that standard together with USA .... which certainly destine it to be as cheap and crappy as possible. 3PMSF is a MINIMUM-standard that requires a tyre to perform (on semi compact snow) a little bit better than a reference tyre ....which of all is a summer tyre.....!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hence it is a "winter" tyre standard for Brussels and Washington DC ....and places like that .....where there are no winter. A summer tyre has more or less +zero grip on snow and ice. Hence to make a "standard" for a tire that is a tiny little bit better than zero is hopeless. 25 % better than zero isn't much.... Hence EU has created a meaningless black hole of a standard where about anything north of a summer tyre can be labelled as 3PMSF. For Nordic winter tyres which performs sky high better than the 3PMSF requirements ....well.....of course....they qualify to be labelled with 3PMSF. Hence the total opposite of your "understanding" of what qualify for what.... That you see many "...specially in Norway...." with 3PMSF tyres is simply because they drive on Nordic winter tyres ....not because the 3PMSF label (requriements) in any shape or form proofs or qualify to be suitable for Nordic winter conditions. The 3PMSF standard is something that EU has obliged Norway, Sweden and Finland to follow. Many in Norway is less than happy about the introduction of that "standard". The Norwegian labour union TLF (Trafikk- og Logistikkforbundet) that organise professional drivers for whatever of trucks / semi-trucks / vans / bus..... certainly has spoken out against that kind of crappy standards as 3PMSF. In an article from TLF they say that "....it is frightening to see this kind of standard for tyres introduced on Norwegian roads.... ....and it certainly does not make the safety on roads better ....." They say that the 3PMSF label spans whatever tyres from very good tyres (the Nordic ones) to a lot of poor tyres Hence to be understood as crap ...which makes the standard meaningless They say that M+S tyres (that is nowhere near a winter tyre for the Nordics) has better sideways support (for sideways forces) hence gives better control than many of these 3PMSF tyres. They also say that manufacturers of these 3PMFS tyres do admit that such a label DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR NORDIC WINTER CONDITIONS. Well known brands as Nokian and Bridgestone sell tyres with the label 3PMSF .....but they also give a warning ....that they are NOT suitable for Nordic winter conditions. I would say that you obvious has a mission to go and tell Nokian (for example) that they haven't understood anything .....since you have stated that 3PMSF tyres "....meet the requirements for Nordic winter tyres...." .....good luck on that one. I also challenge you on your statement that 3PMSF tyres are "perfect legal". I would say that the only you show is perfect ignorance. That 3PMSF tyres are "legal" does not mean that they are good ....and can be used under any road/weather conditions. There are additional requirements in the law that states that one must drive according to conditions (like not to drive at all ) and also use equipment which is suitable for the actual conditions. All terrain tyres / all season tyres are good for naked asphalt ....not for Nordic snow and ice conditions. If you were stopped in a control on a road with icy condition you would be fined and grounded until you had got proper winter tyres on. To quote one of those who do the controls (from Statens Vegvesen - the Norwegian road authority): "People who drive with all season / all terrain tyres (no matter 3PMSF label) should not drive on icy roads ...simply don't use the car.... If they caused an accident by driving under such condition ....they would be in big trouble...". Your argument that you will "....leave the Nordics when it starts to warm up...." again shows that you are totally lost in understanding of reality concerning the weather and road conditions here north. The reality is very different from what you imagine. The reality is that it can be -30 C one nice winter day .....with plenty of grip on the road surface.... and a few hours later it can be plus degrees, rain pouring down and the road as icy as a skating ring. That can nowadays (with the climate change) happen any day of the winter. Sorry ....you can not plan just to leave before it "starts to warm up". How you with your van shall leave the Arctic and Nordic within a few hours is beyond me. Specially Norway with a very changeable weather and temperatures you risk all sorts of road conditions ....any day.... and you must be equipped for that. When adding that has an extreme topography with a lot of places where the road has to pass over mountains ....hence elevation changes which will result in variation of road conditions of all sorts. On one side of the mountain the road can have naked asphalt ....then up on the mountain plenty of snow (often to much) ....and then down on the other side at low elevation you can experience ice and more ice. You simply can not just avoid these things ....you must face it. It does not help you at all to dream about using studded tyres "when it warms up" and it does not help you to carry with you snow chains in your luggage if you don't use them. So these foreign camper vans are really very dangerous Bambi on ice machines. It does not help much ....on top of that their substandard tyres ....that they are inexperienced drivers for the conditions....and that their camper is heavy ....often around 3,5 tons. For us who live here is there are not much comfort in knowing that there are even worse vehicles on the roads. Again ...and again ....on daily basis....comes foreign semi trucks across the border into Norway with all sorts of serious deficiencies to their equipment. Like driving on worn down summer tyres, no brakes, fake driver licenses ....and so on. We call them death machines ....and yes deadly accidents happens. So thank you EU for your "standards". I will come with a big shout out to salute the road authority that constantly are out on the roads for doing controls of vehicles and remove from the road those who are not fit to be there. The problem is that they can not be everywhere at any time....they don't have resources for that. Concerning another type of equipment. I want to add that you seem to drive with some weird amber colour lights right under the windscreen. They are illegal in Norway in the colour/combination/light setup you drive with. Obs...obs.... now I see that you has posted a video about your driving adventures .....and capabilities for your equipment ....for example on a parking lot in Alta. There you really prove that you are driving a helpless Bambi on ice. But that does not deterre you and your friends to drive out on the main road, E6, as if it was top driving conditions. You obvious did not learn much. I don't want to see you or anyone on the road to be hurt so be careful. Ohhhh.....and didn't you say that you should leave the Nordics before it became warm / icy.....????

You may be able to get it to start, but cold starting mechanically, wear wise is a lot higher than a warm start.

I do love seeing the wildlife along the drive, and unfortunately you do see some of them killed in road traffic accidents that does sound like quite a grim experience putting down the reindeer. It might be a difficult action to perform, but probably better for the relieve the animal suffering if necessary.

I’m sorry but that is a horrible interior layout and color. You need to change both.

should be turning your headlights off when parked at the opposite of the road

Not really sure which part you’re referring. If it’s the bit where I’m putting on the grille cover those are the DRL which are on, not the headlights. Although they do look far brighter in the video than they’re doing reality.

Not often done in vans that could be done with electric or hydronic. But not hugely necessary or worth the effort to retrofit.

kiff episode, just shows how much prep goes into these expeditions, like absorbing so much. Although I would need to be a lot more nerdy to undertake a trip like this solo. But there is something about these types of trips, challenging, problem solving and literally if you aint prepared your trip is ruined. Just love all your gadgets in the van. Have fun with Katie!

Definitely lots of preparation required for these trips just to be able to be safe and comfortable up here in a van

Love that you still make a turn signal with possibly no one within 25km. Old habits! Great video. Thanks.

I absolutely loved the foggy drone shots that you shot in the morning , so haunting , desolate ,beautifull and great choice of music. The cinematography is stunning , some of your finestvwork to date! Best Aron from Wales

Thank you very much I am definitely enjoying the new drone on this trip. Foggy shots are particularly difficult as it causes the blades to ice over pretty quick.

I used to drive Diesel Engine Buses in minus -30C in Northen Québec and the engine heaters which were build in are extremely helpful, in the Arctic in Nunavut the diesel engines of trucks,buses and heavy equipment using Arctic diesel never stopped, they ran 24/7 as we had constant 12hrs shifts and always let the engines run, also we were never allowed to put the breaks on as we used wooden blocks to immobilise the wheels, this was for the Baffinland Iron Ore compagny in Nunavut, Baffinland Iron Ore has the longest road in Nunavut, a 100km stretch which runs from Mary River to Milne Port on the Coast were during summer the vessels are loaded with the crushed Ore.

Engine pre heaters are great! I’m not surprised on heavy equipment to might just keep them running all the time!

Windshield washer fluid is rated to -30 degrees Fahrenheit You’re nowhere near that. It shouldn’t be frozen.

Not sure what a Fahrenheit is. Anyway, variety of different washer fluid is rated different levels. This was earlier the trip so probably some of my UK mix are still in the system or or snow, and ice builds up on top of the nozzles which blocks it
