Would love a Van’s ‘fleet review’ both historical and current. I know there’s been bits and bobs throughout your videos but an all up summary would be great. Vans has great planes but their names aren’t exactly descriptive haha

Completed my RV-7 in Nov-22 and now have close to 70 hours on it. I love the plane and it was definitely the right plane for me. Got my tail wheel endorsement then transition training, but the learning curve was still steep for me, coming from 500 hours in Cherokees. Still struggling to get consistent smooth landings, but again I’m happy with the tail dragger. Very fast and sporty! I just renewed my insurance and it dropped from $3200 to $1600. Should drop more next year when I renew, at least that’s what I’m hoping for.

500 Com/SE/ME/I and I got $1850 out the gate. Zero hrs in RV-7 that I just bought yet (which is frustrating, as it's been sitting in my hanger for 2 weeks! CFI availability / weather), but under 20 tw. Got a good deal from the broker. Can't wait to fly MY new plane!

@@pnzrldr Schedule for transition training is tough during the winter season. It's difficult to find the CFI and finding the weekend with good weather for training makes it tougher.

I can second that!! I’d imagine it’s actually not too far off this plane in terms of price.. maybe a couple grand more a year and a larger purchase price, but certainly an incredible deal given the technology inside it.

The problem I have with Vans is the same problem I have with all experimentals: used ones seem to rarely have transponders or GPS. I know GPS isn't needed, but even a simple one would be handy. I would be flying out of a Charlie so I have to have a transponder. There are some out there but they're all WAY more expensive. People seem to focus on different things than I do when building/fixing up planes
@fabiocf3708
@fabiocf3708 9 месяцев назад
Can't you just buy a used transponder for a couple of grand and grab a screwdriver? I'm not an airplane owner... yet. Looking at you diamond a20
@yalyosha
@yalyosha 9 месяцев назад
... huh? Where are you finding these planes without transponders? All the builders I know spent the time of day to make sure they can fly near one of the larger cities without becoming illegal. Same goes for GPS - I honestly don't know anyone that's built a plane in the past decade that didn't put a GPS in. Many 20 year old planes are due for avionics upgrades. Luckily with uAvionix tailbeaconX and AV30C and Garmin GPS175 it's easier than ever. I just did it to my 172.
@neumeisteranimalhospital2627
@neumeisteranimalhospital2627 9 месяцев назад
I completely disagree. I've been around a lot Van's kits and it's rare one does not have a transponder. A lot of the older ones do not have a GPS installed in the panel and rely on a portable. Most planes within the last 10 years will have some kind of glass installed and with an iPad and apps, do you really need that. And like someone said for a couple of thousand bucks you can add a transponder if it doesn't have one.
@coasternut3091
@coasternut3091 9 месяцев назад
@@neumeisteranimalhospital2627 that is the problem. Most of the planes I could afford weren't built in the last 10 years, or even in the last 30. Experimentals are usually cheaper but the cheap ones are very poorly equipped. If I wanted to spend over 100k on a plane then sure, it would have most of what I need. No one seems to have retrofitted an old plane worth 30k with a transponder that wants less than 60k
@neumeisteranimalhospital2627
@neumeisteranimalhospital2627 9 месяцев назад
And if your budget is 30k then your going to be looking at old C140/150's, Champs, Taylorcraft's and Ercoupes or ultralights. If they don't have a transponder you can add a used one for less than a couple of grand easily. But if you want fast cross country with full panels, 4 seats for 30k, you're living in the wrong century.@@coasternut3091

Bought a 2018 RV-7 two months ago. Sliding canopy, XIO-370 engine, Catto FP three blade prop and amazing Garmin avionics (G3X full glass PFD, WAAS IFR GPS, best autopilot you can buy, ADSB in/out, all integrated Garmin style). Insurance was $1800 after a lot of shopping and much worse quotes (I have 500tt, COM/SE/ME/I and 20tw) and I need 5 hrs dual to solo, 10 total to carry pax. Book numbers - 1900 gross for takeoff, 1800 for landing gives 794 useful. 1600 is limit for +6/-3 aerobatics. Cruise is worse than listed here at 157KTAS at 50 LOP - not sure on ROP numbers yet. Range? well, I won't likely stay up more than three hours ever, so 500ish is closer. Climb is very weight dependent - 1400 at Vy for heavier weights, 1700 at Vy for lighter, and cruise climb of 125 and heavy will do 500 fpm or more through 9000 MSL. Purchase price was (keeping real number to myself) between $175,000 and $125,000. Gas is $6 a gallon at home field, but if desired, plane can burn zero ethanol 93 Unleaded. Haven't decided if I'll go through the logistics and odor to save $2/gal yet or not. Hanger is costing $500/mo, for big, new, lighted, powered, electric fold door at a very nice field 30 minutes from my house. Plane flies like a , but you have to stay ahead of it. Sticks not yokes, with epic cool hand grips and trim hat. Looks great inside and out! I can fix normal stuff that others need an A/P for. Tailwheel handling is, so far, completely benign compared to what I trained on (Cub / Stearman). Haven't done crosswind landings yet, but anticipate more authority than either of the above. So far, this is the (relatively) affordable aviation dream. I sort of wish it had four seats, but thinking back to my previous Grumman Tiger, remember only a few uses of those back seats for other than baggage. Hoping Vans recovers from Ch. 11 and continues churning out amazing planes - I may even build one some day, but right now, flying is too much fun!

Since I'm here, I just want to add that the Mooney M20C video was an eye opener. I had no idea that it was as affordable to operate as it is. My perception of Mooney's seemed to be based on their later (less successful) Ovations and such. Now the M20C is near the top of my certificated wish list.

How come nobody else on the internet seems to be talking about this specific question amongst the single engine market.
