I feel like a pretty obvious solution for the League Cup would to just have it so that the teams playing in Europe don't play in the League Cup. It'd make it more likely for outsiders to win and earn a Europa league place, while lessening the sheer amount of games teams in Europe have to play.
I can tell you guys haven't figured out the rules of youtube with swearing but the rules are no swear words at all within 1 minute. Then Alan can swear all he wants (except c bombs). Loving the podcast fellas. Keep it up
Love the dynamic of the show, one of the best without a doubt..but the Micah & Gary dynamic is just the best. Young & older (with respect) is just truly unmatched. Keep up the good work guys. Look forward to these shows every week!
And Rashford's when he was denied a goal , maybe a few, with ricochet's off of his chest, his shoulder? Isn't that what VAR is for, to zoom in for a more detailed view because it was took quick for any human eye?
@@Do27gg Jason Cundy read UEFA's rules out on TalkSport and Alan mentioned it here, it should Not have been a penalty because it's deflects off his body, and is going away from the goals
@@Do27ggThat's why they dropped the VAR instantly, yeah?. If you think that says nothing about the legitimacy of the decision then I can't help your naivety.
@@misturmonson7423uefa have come out and said it was the wrong decision! Also the VAR ref made the decision to show him the only angle that made it look like handball when the TV replays showed all angles it blatant cheating
The too many games thing is understandable but just doesn't need changed imo. Only the big big clubs are complaining, but they are also loaded with players/ youth players. Use them more. Use it to develop them
I noticed Alan was fine with VAR against Arsenal…. I agree it was an awful decision, UEFA were never gonna let the billions of PSG get kicked out at the group stage
Probably because they made the correct decision on that one. Not enough evidence to overturn the onfield decisions. Gabriel might've got the decision originally if he hadn't fallen over every five minutes
came to the comments just to see if someone else said it. If I remember right, he wasn't just fine with the Arsenal VAR, he thought it was ridiculous to be upset about it.
because they made the right decision in the arsenal game. shearer's also been critical of VAR when it's gone in favor of newcastle before, like in the wolves game. you trying to imply bias says more about your own bias than shearer's
I’m a Man Utd fan and was gutted for Newcastle (not only because I had a bet on them to win) but that decision was so transparently favouring the so-called “UCL Elite clubs” - even tho PSG have never won the thing, so don’t know why they are considered that. Sincerely hope Newcastle go through. Pretty sure they are at home against Milan, so they can win that for sure. And Dortmund would love to KO PSG! So it’s definitely on! It would be the right thing to happen and would right that wrong of a decision! Even if they don’t, Newcastle have shown they belong more than holding their own in a group of de*th.
The ref was doing excellent up until that point. I almost feel like after turning down previous VAR checks earlier in the game and the PSG players petulant reactions as if they were having some kind of injustice over every decision, which worked up the crowd creating a hostile atmosphere, that the ref just thought “if I don’t give this I’ll be the target of the hate after the game, if they miss it then at least it will be on their players not me” Basically boiling down to it being easier to upset the minority travelling fans at a chance of a 1-1 draw than making the call to effectively result in a 1-0 loss to a hostile home crowd. I’d also like to point out something that got little coverage but Lascelles and Trippier clearly spotted and was trying to point out to the ref, Ramos’ encroachment during the penalty (go back and watch the penalty and keep your eye on #9)
Ichiro used to pull the same trick with Japanese. He always spoke threw a translator but he spoke great english. You can hear him chatting it up with the opposing players as he scooted around the bases.
love the pod. keep up the good work. However, people who don't take wrongful decisions seriously except when their own club is harmed aren't credible on the subject.
Great stuff once again guys. Question: Were there any players in your teams who were always miserable and didn't get involved with the team atmosphere and kept themselves to themselves?
The penalty given to PSG stinks of corruption in my opinion. It made zero sense. Either one or more refs were paid off, or an order were given from above to give that penalty. Newcastle are losing so extremely much from this and they should be able to sue the UEFA for this if they drop out of the Champions League because of this. It should have serious consequences for the referees and UEFA when something like this happen.
More questions need to be asked about why there were 8 minutes of added time. There were no goals, no injuries, only 2 subs and no pauses for VAR reviews when the decision was made for 8 minutes to be added on.
@@dash7148You might think that, but there really wasn't much time wasting, Pope got a yellow card for it, but that was all. Nowhere near enough for 8 mins, that's for sure.
Gary, Alan and Micah. Firstly, love the Pod. I would just like to comment on the sin bin being brought into football. I see this as a positive thing. I played hockey at a good level and hockey has a green (2-5 min sin bin), yellow (10 min sin bin) and red card (off for the remainder of the game) system. Everyone mentions that it makes the game more defensive, but what is spoiling the game currently? Time wasting, crowding the referee etc this would be reduced and see a faster flowing game
Merson explained why sinbins won't work. Sinbins for starters takes points away from the opposition team in rugby, which isn't possible in football. Also if there's a timeout for footballers, it'll result in parking the bus - it'll make football much less entertaining
Maybe Paul Merson is wrong. It'll work as a deterrent, so we will see more entertaining football as counter attacks won't be cynically stopped. Also when a team goes to 10 men we still have entertaining games. Spurs v Chelsea.
This whole cynical foul bollocks. Give a yellow for it? Who gives a shit if it ruins the game... You want to stamp it out then bloody use what you have at your disposal before bringing in new stuff. Refs need backbone.
It’s time that communications between VAR and the ref are broadcast in real time as it is in rugby. During the conversation either on the field or in front of the monitor the ref should describe what s/he is or isn’t seeing as an offence and challenge the VAR to state what rule has been broken. Let’s stop the cowardly VAR practice presently being used and show some courage and conviction.
Who wants to hear their incompetent communications while trying to enjoy a game of football? Just get rid of VAR until they learn how to use it correctly. In fact, maybe get rid anyway because even when it works well there are lots of negatives to it.
@g-e9513 Owen basically said Shearer's comments about Owen refusing to play the last few games for Newcastle was totally made up and never happened. He was carrying an injury. And they fell out about it few years back. And haven't spoke since.
I honestly thought when the ref got sent to the monitor he was gonna not give the pen. And then when it was given I was expecting Livramento to get angry and not let the pen get taken until the ref looks at it again (what I feel like I would do in that situation) 😂
In regards to the League Cup, I strongly believe removing the teams who finish in a European spot would be hugely beneficial to the game. Top 6/7 clubs get less games, everyone else gets a good chance to win a trophy!
Question for you all. With the issues around the handball rule when in the box, is there an argument for awarding indirect free kicks instead of a penalty under certain circumstances as the punishment of a penalty is hugely disproportionate to the offence when it didnt deny a goalscoring opportunity
@Jay-th6ep true, but its inevitable that there will be subjective areas where we all disagree regardless of the rules or set up, but an increase in fairness is certainly possible
can't remember the last time I saw an indirect free-kick in the box. Used to happen quite a bit but seems to have vanished. Absolutely I've always thought an act that denies a GSO should be a penalty but an act that in no obvious way denies a GSO (e.g. the ludicrous handball here or when an attacker is facing the sidelines at the edge of the 18 yard area and is touched and goes down) should just be an indirect free kick.
Being an arsenal fan I’m not even taking the piss out of that penalty, becauee it’ll come round full circle and happen to us at some point. Ridiculous decision and the use of VAR needs to be improved so so much. For me there HAS to be ex players without bias which is easier said than done involved in VAR
I did have this opinion to, and have been defending spurs and united at times. When it came to ours, everyone forgot the two apologies we had last year, and went off a cliff in how they've hounded arteta and arsenal. So personally, although your opinion is certainly the correct one, fuck rivals. They laid their bed now they can lie in it. Watching shearer, Neville, carragher look like hypocrites now would be funny, if it wasn't for the dystopia of it all.
I'm afraid that the Arab black gold money is a major concern for the integrity of our beautiful game, and var gives that opportunity for it to happen and also the emotions and previous 50/50 debatable decisions to have influence on a so called leveller decision later in the game.
The VAR refs should just be silent when calling the ref across. No freezing on the point of contact bollocks and just play it from the start. Only get involved when the ref asks for it to be played forward or backwards.
From Chapeltown to Miami , Big Meeks lording it up everywhere. Regarding Southgate I thought he wasn't good enough originally when he got the job , I'm pleased too admit I was wrong. If we go English I'd like to see Eddie Howe given it. Pep surely would want to manage Spain before England . Speaking of Pep who will replace him at City when he does leave.
The mistakes by VAR is worse now than before VAR. It is one thing for a one human to make a quick on the spot decision based on what he saw or thought he saw. He had no state of the art technology, no way to stop the match and perform a lengthy review of the events. Rewinding and slowing the action from every angle. As such a decision is made, good or bad and the game naturally carry’s on, it flows. The officials were given the benefit of the doubt and fans would debate it for years to come over a pint.
Linekar btw peeps..is so goated I'm already thinking about how life will change if he's not moderating, plus he looks healthy af..an absolute stalwart both on and off 💪
Nah they just call out mistakes when they see them. Doesn't matter about what team it is. I've never believed in this corruption story but after that, I'm starting to wonder.
@@Do27gg As an Arsenal fan, me too. My best friend who I watch football with is a Liverpool fan and we understand each other very much. If we don't win the league, I hope Liverpool do. Instead of that corrupt Light Blue club.
When var made the mistake of allowing liverpool's perfect legitimate goal to be ruled out against spurs and liverpool protested in a statement, people was saying its normal for mistakes to happen on the field. I guess it hits different if your club is on the receiving end. 😂
At the rate they are going, maybe the solution is to have VAR 2.0, to assist the VAR 1.0. Something equal to the Ciurt of Appeal. Then set up a VAR Supreme to assist the VAR 2.0. The VAR Supreme has the powers to change the Final Full Time score.
Var should change so that the ref requests help ONLY if unsure of incidents, with everyone accepting that there will be times that the ref is not correct.
Think a solution to the league cup problem would be making premier league teams only allowed to play 3 players over 23. Or something like that. Therefore becomes about younger talents and gives EFL clubs more of a chance of winning it. Not a perfect solution but better that what it is now.
It’s like European refs didn’t get the memo when it comes to handballs not being given when it deflects of another body part. Man Utd got done at least once by this last season in the Europa. It didn’t look as bad as the Newcastle one, but the ball clearly hit Martinez’s leg and then hit his arm. I could see why the ref gave it, he mustn’t have seen the ball hit his leg first, but I was shocked when VAR didn’t point that out and tell the ref it’s not a Pen! It’s madness! When that happens there’s literally no point having VAR!
Wage caps and contract details are open to the public in the US. You can find out every player contract details for all the big sports NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL & MLS. So no point in trying to hide it as any fan who wants to know can easily find out. Also they pay far more than the Premier League so US English should stop using them as some kind of bench mark…none would make it in the top earners in England either.
Give the chances to Graham Potter or Eddie Howe cos they are the most experience English manager. Joachim Loew was given a lot of chances by the German Fa before finally won the World cup in 2014.
Handball is always gona be a subjective decision. Give the officials the power to make the subjective decision on intentionality and natural positioning Surely a proposal like this would help it immeasurably: Handball rule: ->Is the arming/handling of ball deemed intentional (probably 1% of cases) - if Yes - pen - If No -> Pen only given: If arming/handling contact occurs during what is deemed by the officials an unnatural movement / shape taken by the alleged offender (ie. Something deemed an unnatural athletic position for the demands of the game - running, jumping, protecting, slide tackling etc)
Hi guys great show the streets love it could you speak a little more about the Americanisation of our game pls keep up the the work and Big Meeks stay up 👊🏾
Love wacthing the pod! Question: What is something from the actual game that you wished existed in your playing time? Wish you the best, shouout from Portugal.
Your forgetting the mistake by VAR in the 70tg minute. Clear penalty by Gordon on Hakimi. So before Newcastle fans say it's daylight robbery let's not forget that penalty.
Maybe the VAR official shouldn't be allowed to SAY anything to the ref? The referee should determine what he needs to see (all the angles, etc.) and then make his own decision. Anything beyond that is the VAR official attempting to influence the outcome, which is unacceptable.
I was all for VAR at the start, mainly because of that super strike by Frank Lampard for England in the World Cup (think it was against Germany) that wasn’t given when the ball clearly crossed the line before bouncing back into play and the goal wasn’t given. Currently VAR needs a overhaul
Is there any mileage in captains being able to elect, on a pre-set number of occasions as in cricket and tennis, going to VAR? So, apart from goal-line technology (which is always present), VAR is only used a stipulated number of times in a game, perhaps twice per team at most in the whole game? That means big errors can be put right, it is used sparingly, as judged by the players with their captain, and it doesn't hold up the whole game and interfere so much.
If that decision is unacceptable. Why are we accepting it? Why aren't they being held accountable? We all know it was wrong so why not rescind the last minute goal. We all know it was a mistake so it makes no sense to let it stand especially when it didn’t affect the remainder of play. 6:30
Even though I'm a Newcastle fan and really wanted Newcastle to get that big statement win, this would set a really really terrible precedent. It would just be a matter of time before some result we got was overturned for some spurious reason. That uncertainty we have now with VAR when someone scores a goal and isn't sure whether to celebrate, that would be extended to the end of the game. And there would be cases where there was disagreement over the decision to change the result. Where do you draw the line? If a team scores after a wrongly determined sending off, do you change that result? At some point you just have to accept there will be occasional mistakes and everyone has to live with them, for good or ill.
@@stephenderry9488 It’s a good point but I think there can be a line for exceptional circumstances. When the decision is deemed blatantly wrong by everyone and their dog including UEFA who forced the VAR team to stand down. There should be an independent panel similar to the one that determined Gordon’s goal against Arsenal was legit.
@@valleyriver Perhaps but that panel has no power to overturn results (nor should it). And you still have Arsenal fans and managers whining about decisions even after they are validated. And cases like Wolves game against Fulham where they agreed the decision was probably wrong but VAR was right not to overturn it because the error wasn't clear or obvious enough. Every fix you bring in just kicks the problem down the road, like Lineker said you'll end up with reviews or reviews of reviews all disagreeing.
@@stephenderry9488 a decision validation panel in exceptional circumstances such as these when it’s unanimously objected and detrimental, allows for accountability and justice. Their decision should mean case closed for everyone including Arsenal fans. That PSG penalty is clearly and obviously wrong because Tino’s body was in a natural position and although the word natural is technically open to interpretation, it would take extreme bias to say it wasn’t a natural position. Allowing mistakes like these makes a mockery of football.
Wrong Gary ... in the Lewis Miley incident the ball came off his thigh before hitting his arm. The only small difference between that and the Tino incident is that Lewis was moving his arm away from the ball, yet Tino's running action meant his elbow came towards the ball. (It was still a natural arm position though, so neither was a penalty).
I think if you're playing in europe of any kind (CL, EL & ECL) then you don't need to compete in the league cup. It'll stop the game congestion that the big clubs complain about & it'll give a another team who doesn't win trophies a good chance to win one.
For me, I think every league should have an independent VAR different from the VAR and maybe correct them whenever they make clear error decisions because u can't be taking apologies on such crucial matches!!!
Great podcast ! Claudio Ranieri led Leicester City to win the premiership, Then they humiliate him and fire him. When they get relegated I said, what goes around comes around. Your thoughts Gary?
It's funny because, had the referee given a penalty to begin with, the VAR probably would have still sent him to the monitor. He then would have most likely turned his decision over and cancelled the penalty.
Hi guys! I want to ask a question, it’s probably going to be buried in here but I’m not on any of the other socials. I’ll probably keep asking it What happens immediately after you’ve been sent off? For example, whenever the cameras follow a dismissed player you always see someone with an earpiece taking them down the tunnel, who is that? Official or part of the coaching staff? Are you interviewed as part of a process? Always wondered. Hope to hear it answered :)
There shouldn't have been a 98th minute, let alone a penalty. Bet the air was just as blue here as it was in Al's room Tuesday night. Appalling refereeing and officiating. To be honest it's even worse given the fact that UEFA agree it was awful - although not publicly of course.
Quite clearly shouldn’t have been a penalty, which makes Shearer’s (and the wider NUFC related) anger all the more enjoyable. It’s infuriating when referees screw you over, isn’t it? Beautiful! 😂
uefa literally told shearer this the day after. you're the one who can't get his facts right or understand an independent panel (and the whole football world apart from plastic arsenal "fans") that the arsenal decision was correct. @@Do27gg
I'm not sure sin bins are the answer to the problem of professional fouls, but I would like them to do something about it. In that example of the Cup Final given, I think the punishment for a foul like that effectively gives teams at least 4 opportunities to stop a really strong goalscoring position from being created, as you do have to be more careful once on a yellow but for me the freedom to outright and actively cheat a few times first is something I've never liked.
You guys maybe on to something regarding VAR! In engineering, for critical systems, we have a 2 out of 3 voting system on all instruments. So maybe there should be a something similar for VAR??? Or is that taking it too far???? lol
