In today's video I will be building a Variable Lab Bench Power Supply KIT that I got from AliExpress - y.sudokin.com/psu or Banggood - y.sudokin.com/bpsu
With a range of 0-30V and 0-3A it really satisfies all my hobbyist needs, plus it was a very fun kit to build.
The power supply kit cost me just $5.29 so apart from the CPU cooler that I had laying around and the used AC 24V transformer I bought locally for around $10 this wasn't a very expensive project.
In the future videos I will be making an encasing for it, adding a display to monitor the voltage and amperage but for now I just wanted it working an functional.

For anyone just starting with these boards, i would REALLY recommend soldering in sockets for the three IC's just in case you need to swap them out later. For the tiny extra cost, it is very worthwhile because these TL081's are very hard to remove later......ask me how i know!...lol!

englishrupe01 change the TL081’s out for some LM741’s which can take 44v.

Nobody could accuse you of being slapdash that's for sure. I have one of these kits, I have ordered another and spare 'gubbins' for when I pop something. A really nice video - thank you so much. I wondered what that blue trim pot was for, it says nothing on the adverts. I have a rather expensive Fluke that I save for important occasions. I decide to get a couple of the cheapest yellow £4 odd ones and another at around £8. I think you will be in for a shock when you test your new meter against your old one. Everyone seems to complain about 'cheap Chinese junk' but why do they buy it then. There is no doubt the quality of kit from China is getting better. I do agree with you re cooling. The pureists froth at the mouth and scream blue murder if you mention a fan, they prefer a heat sink the size of a loaf. Do you think it would be possible to use 2 D1047 output transisters in parallel as just 1 for 3A is a lot ?

Congratulations from Brazil! It's amazing vídeo. It helped me a lot. My transformer also 28vAC. I had doubts, now, no more. Thank's!

The multimeter was actually telling you... "20A MAX UNFUSED". Which means it's melted. I know it's been two years. It's me.

Good afternoon, I bought a 24 + 24 3A transformer and when connecting and measuring with a multimeter I saw that the output voltage is 25v, I would like to know if I can connect this board with this Trafo?

I buildt this kit my self but it doesent work. I notised that the 5v1 zener diodes does not put out 5v, and i checed them whit my multimeter and they seem intact, does anybody know what could be the problem. And on the output there are only 0,5 volts.

Got mine all soldered. The voltage works fine but when I turn it on the current is saturated to the max. I v checked for short circuit, can't find any. There is no load but the current limiter is on. Any idea?

Great video! I made the same kit for my first PS. My question is what music did you use for your video? I like the techno/assembly line stuff for soldering, etc...

+4FunRC thanks. Part two will be when I find time to make an enclosure for it. I have already fit 10 turn pots instead of the factory ones. And the VAM9020 panel meter which I made a video about. Hopefully soon. Stay tuned :)

Most important, make sure the PC Board is VERY CLEAN on the soldering side. Just swab it with Isopropyl alcohol

At the time I didn't have IPA yet, it was hard to find, had to order it separately. Now I do swab all my boards with it after soldering :)

Why 24v and not 30v transformer? I mean the guys is using a 38v transformer

I used two old 12v halogen lamp transformers connected in series to get 24v and works like a charm.

Can I use 24VA 2A transformer to get 3 amps output or I will get only 2 amps? Please give me a reply
@dusnoki
@dusnoki 7 лет назад
Yes, but to be honest I wouldn't even strain this little power supply with 3 amps because as I've read on a couple of forums lately... the components on it are really not rated for 3 amps. So either way keep it under 2A especially for longer periods.
@RiFLeX117
@RiFLeX117 7 лет назад
if you use 24V 2A transformer means you get 48W available without taking into account any losses, so by power law at the output if you set 30V you only could draw I=P/V=48/30= 1.6A. Nevertheless, if you set 5V at the output you could draw I=P/V=48/5=9.6A BUT the circuit will limit that to ~3A even if you put your amp potentiometer all the way to the right

Thank you for a very well done and informative video. I have built the kit using a few mods I found elsewhere. I am now ready to connect the board to the required 24vac supply and was stopped dead in my tracks! I was not planning on using a 24v transformer as I already have on hand an 8.5 amp Variac to use instead. A problem--my variac has only 2 wires out--hot and neutral--while the board shows connections for 3 wires at the 24vac position!!! I barely qualify even as a 'beginner novice' so am lost as to how to proceed. Does the board want an earth ground, and if so, which lead is used? No polarity is given. Any help at all would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance
@JuanGarcia-mq4lj
@JuanGarcia-mq4lj 4 года назад
As you can see on the video, the input uses only two connections: The two outer connections of the connector. The center one is not used. BTW, no polarity indicated at the input because it is alternate current. I used two old 12v halogen lamp transformers connected in series to get 24v and works like a charm. Good luck.

@@JuanGarcia-mq4lj Thanks Juan! I received help from another source which is the same as you offer here, and of course it works! I greatly appreciate your help. BTW, it never occurred to me to use a load in series to get the 24v!

What amount of ampere what you recommend for this power supply? (1,2,3,4 ampere)
@javs533
@javs533 5 лет назад
And what transformer did you use? Because i found some transformer that are 24VAC 3A transformers and some that are 1/0,4A. But what amount of volts and ampere would you recommend?
@dusnoki
@dusnoki 5 лет назад
@@javs533 I'm using a 24 volt ac 3a transformer. But I don't recommend you using the power supply on 3 amps for long periods of time, as it is prone to breaking on that high of an amperage.

and the 7824 ? why is not nounted aboard ?
@dusnoki
@dusnoki 5 лет назад
Because that chip outputs 24 volts for the fan, I don't need that cause I'm using a 12V CPU fan anyway. I used a buck converter to step down the voltage to 12V for my fan and 9020 display.

Unfortunately it has to be an AC transformer.
@JuanGarcia-mq4lj

captain skeptical I believe I read that ac was used for some other purpose in the circuit so applying just direct cc after the bridge won’t do.
@daveton3895

yes you can but you need to connect a second very small supply for the -5V.

the light on my board stays on constantly how would i fix this
@englishrupe01
@englishrupe01 5 лет назад
My first one did that, and it output 30v with no adjustment, so i eventually bought 50 more TL081's for a few bucks. I switched all 3 out and immediately it started working perfectly. It seems sometimes these items are faulty from the get-go so it is worth having a few on hand. I also installed round pin type sockets so its easier to swap if they ever go bad again. I love these boards and they are on ebay now for under $5 if you look hard. Great bargain!
@toddzino58
@toddzino58 4 года назад
Tl081’s are not adequate for the long haul. They are rated for 36v. Easy to burn out.
