In this video I demonstrate how to create endless variations of a common fiddle inspired flatpicking phrase.
1) Add quarter note "stops" to the eighth note phrase
2) Add and target flavor notes like the b3, b5, b7, and even the 6th
3) Break the phrase down to smaller phrases
4) Begin the phrase on the 3rd and the 5th
5) Learn all these variations in other chords like G, D, and A...

Thanks again Mickey ❤! Your explanations for what’s going on “in the language “ is golden! I’ve always really struggled with co-mingling the major scale and minor scale tones to get specific “flavors”. These short videos are SUPER helpful for me to see and hear what is actually going on in relation to the chord tones. Please keep ‘em coming. What’s a good way to throw $5 your way? This stuff is valuable ❤️

these are Great Lessons! Your last 4 videos,, starting with "fiddle tune phrase Part 1"; have really opened my eyes on how I should be thinking about phrasing. You have simplified it; taught me how to get more out of the basics using (for lack of a better term) a methodical recipe. I found a focus and my playing has improved infinitely (in my mind) over night. Thanks

Longtime flatpicker here who never learned any of the theory or notes on guitar. What I mean is I couldn't tell you whether I was playing the 3rd or the flatted 3rd, or the 7th, etc. (But I can read music). My question is, when you are playing, jamming, taking a break, does your brain actually think, I'm going to play the flatted 3rd here? Or, when practicing, do you think in advance, I think this would sound better to use the flatted 3rd? Am I making sense? I ask because I'm looking to take my playing to the next level, but I'm not sure in what direction I want to go. Thanks!

I have spent the past 30 years thinking about how to create lines that sound correct. It’s a never ending process - theory and reading is great but in the end it’s of course about how it sounds. Having said that, I enjoy naming the sounds and shapes. This was we can apply these algorithms to more than one song. I tend to look at bluegrass and fiddle tunes as very variation based ! It’s part of the tradition to be able to play endless cool things over the changes - everyone has their own way of doing it 😎
