A little fact: In Devil Violist Paganini, the Paganini actually played only 1 variation of Paganini's Variations on Carnival of Venice, which is the first variation. The other 2 are taken from here, with third one slightly altered.
This set of variations are amazing, and I'd say this is one of the best works Ernst has surpassed Paganini.
Also, for the introduction part, it's actually his nocturne No.1 LOL
Hope u enjoy~

The Intonation is absolutely insane. Holy smokes what a great violinist!

Ernst had to hear and follow Paganini secretly to learn how he played. Ernst have some good compositions. Paganini influenced the audience the most to this day. Even Lizt follows Paganini. If you ask people, they would most definitely heard of Paganini, but certainly less likely to have heard of Ernst.

Variation 7 at 5:48 has to be the best one Ernst composed here. That's why some soloists (Vadim Repin, Kirill Troussov, Filip Pogady, David Garrett, etc.) steal it for the abridged version that they like to play as an encore lol. Also, I feel bad for that poor pianist who had to sit there for 16 minutes playing the same accompaniment

Obviously David Garrett has stolen this lol in the movie

@@SisselOnline oh true, I didn't notice that! It's funny that in that movie Paganini secretly stole a variation from Ernst, considering they were rivals. If anything, Ernst would be the one to steal from Paganini (which he did!). You can read about the Paganini/Ernst rivalry on Ernst's Wikipedia page, which is pretty interesting imo

Paganini in the movie actually stole 2 variations from Ernst! Only the first variation is by Paganini himself, other 2 are Ernst's LOLOLOL

@@SisselOnline actually in the third variation that David Garrett plays (the left hand pizzicato one) he combines both Ernst's final variation and Paganini's 18th. It's really all over the place. And then, of course, he finishes with the finale of Moses Fantasy after his strings break, which is in a completely different key than The Carnival of Venice (A major to C major). I've actually never seen the whole movie, maybe I should watch it.

Raz som bol Jozefovi Špačkovy na koncerte keď som mal 8 rokov. Od vtedy sa učím hrať na husle. A dúfam že raz budem hrať ako on. PS. Nechcelo sa mi písať po anglicky.

see also the Ernst CD by Ingolf Turban ! And of course Ernst didn´t surpass Paganinis version. Too many variations. Reminds me of the 60 Barucaba variations by Paganini. But this was a composition for pupils. And when Paganini said: I don´t know, who is the best violinist in the world. But the second is Lipinsky was before he met H.W. Ernst.

If putting some of the Ernst's variations into Paganini's one, then it'll be the best haha

Barucabà variations... Still different, bez Ernst's like just layering most of the variations onto a dull accompaniment 😅 That's a waste.

La verdad que la pieza no es mas que un ejercicio tecnico porque musicalmente es bastante aburrida y poco interesante. Muy monótona y demasiado larga para lo poco que ofrece. Casi me duermo escuchando.

Can't deny lol Ernst does makes it like an exercise for each variation. Only the introduction, which is one of his nocturnes, is a bit interesting. Can't say same for Pag's one.

Ernst was not a great composer, that is all there is to it! The violinist kills themselves while the piano takes a nice little snooze! LOL I don't think he studied composition, or if he did, he didn't learn too much! Compare this to Wieniawski, who was FAR better. Paganini was no great shakes either really but he was capable of some great moments of profound beauty once in awhile and his writing was mostly enjoyable because he often took a rather operatic approach, and I think he also studied composition with a few good teachers including A. Rolla.
@SisselOnline
@SisselOnline Год назад
Well, Ernst learnt composition with Ignaz von Seyfried at 13... Also, this is obviously not his greatest works, so not good to judge by that I would like to suggest you to listen to his Op.24

Not me? I think they are good composers.... Though I will say that Ernst's collaborative works generally is better than his own work, which sorta prove his point.
