Looks sweet in a Tymna deck. You can activate the ability during combat. Boast doesn’t restrict you to sorcery speed. So you swing in and get a hit with at least one creature and in response to Tymna’s triggered ability or after damage before main phase two, activate Varragoth.

This quick tutor in the command zone would work grate for decks that are built around a non-legendary creature. I have a maralen deck built around omen machine and I probably won’t change the commander (because of synergy) but I’m gonna consider it.

could you activate Varragoth during the declare Defenders step, tutor your opponents deck for a bomb, and then during damage step have Anowon pitch it into the bin?

Wouldn’t you be able to activate boast 4 times around the table because it says only 1 each turn, not once during your turn?

It also says that you can only activate the ability if you have attacked during the turn you're trying to activate it. So you wouldn't be able to do this during your opponents' turns. Would be sick though

I’m gonna hate this in standard. Especially in Dimir, if there’s some unblockable blue auras to pair him up with. Just when I thought I could escape those rouges.

On the plus side, rogue decks make this card really bad. Notice that it tutors the card on top of your library. As a countermeasure, one could tutor something they want milled (If this is in a graveyard shell), and play some mind games with the Rogue player.

@@nathanfriedman7367 so you saying if this card gets popular then rouge decks might stick or even grow. Damn. I feel so sick on Arena whenever I play to win with my dimir rouge deck, because half the time I play a rogue with flash my opponent forfeits.

It doesnt need to be unblockable, its based off whether he attacked regardless of doing damage, basically you attack and then before damage calc or anytime before you pass turn or it dieing you may pay the mana and vamp tutor with it. Personally have a tymna thrasios commander deck that would trad the rogue that is yisan the wanderer bard for this new one. I care cuz i love when a coveted prize tutor resolves when i have a full party lol.

Okay, I’m looking at the Kaldheim mechanic page, and you can boast even while the attack is still happening. That makes it so much better.

Yeah, and with Anowon on the board, you can possibly draw that card immediately if you mill a creature after damage. Lots of unblockable rogues to help with that!

If you have the budget for it, you can make a pretty spicy deck. Tutoring things like K'rrik, Opposition Agent, Mikaeus, etc... Biggest obstacle is going to be protecting the commander & getting in.

Seems pretty much perfect in Yuriko. This tutors a card on attack but before damage, so you could even ninjutsu off of this and still get her damage trigger with the perfect card on top.

I've never been a demon, but this halberd-mace thing isn't very much a sneak attack weapon, right? Jokes aside, this has humongous mind games potential. Like, you let your opponent tutor a thing, and then you Vicious Rumors him. Now, the first time it's jaw-dropping "this is eeeeevil" kind of occurrence, but the next time they won't pick a thing they wouldn't want to lose for their tutor. After that, essentially, you're forcing suboptimal draws on them in order not to lose a good thing.

Would Varragoth work with Kaalia of the vast? Meaning, if I attack with Kaalia and put down Varragoth could I then activate it's boast ability?..

you can activate it, but it doesnt put the card in your hand so the kaalia trigger wont be able to target what you searched

Step 1: Varragoth as comamnder Step 2: Begin game and ramp a lot Step 3: Get Varragoth out asap Step 4: Get to 6 mana asap Step 5: Bolas's Citadel next turn Step 6: Play anything for your life total Addendum: LIfelink helps a lot here, and throw a Nyx lotus on there too because you get a lot of pips w this deck

This is going to break my Yuriko deck. Throw whisper silk cloak on him and activate before Yuriko triggers and just grab any rediculous high CMC card and put it on top.. Gross.

Its pretty busted in yuriko or with opp agent. Dont think it's an autoinclude in all black decks, most tables this hits it's gonna be removed immediately. This in yennett is just *chef's kiss* stack those triggers and go to town man. Not overpowered or anything, just a neat card that can spice up certain decks.

This card in Yuriko so you enter combat, attack, boast for a temporal trespass and with Yuriko on the battlefield and her ability on the stack and hit the table for 11.

Varragoth mono-black Voltron EDH!!! Loads of removal, sick equipments and of course some mana rocks. I already have probably 50+ cards for the deck and a good mana base as well. Now I just gotta wait to pull this card.

If it is playable at insta speed, I see it in a Yuriko deck. Could make things reaaally spicy putting Draco or a huge delve spell on top of it: unblocked ninja deals damage, Varragoth on stack, profit. If not, it looks interesting anyway

the fancy version of this card is pretty metal if you ask me :) I love the idea of a mono black political deck. you can say "I'm gonna let you tyutor anything you want, so long as it doesn't hurt me. if you hurt me, the game is over. and then you pull out Meren and opposition agent and lock the game down if they aren't being nice to you.

If the Boast mechanic is always a tutor effect, then it's become my new favorite. Not for the utility it brings me, but the way that mill cards are now going to be in tons of decks just as counterplay. Deckbuilding will look very different once people realize it's either find a counter or be a recipient of several tutors a turn potentially.

If he were to be a commander there is a few options, being part of obnixilis is better. The other cards that can work with him are Bolas citadel, and Baneful omen. possibly words of waste to keep a high mana cost card on top of the library with baneful omen to keep damaging opponents.

How would Opposition Agent work with it if you have to put the card on top of your library? Do you have to cast it immediately?

Opposition Agent exiles as a replacement effect. The card gets exiled instead of being put on top of their library, just like it would get exiled instead of going to their hand.
