Vauxhall Adam S Review - An Abarth 595 or MINI Alternative?

My friend Alex at Stratton Motor Company just took in this car as a part exchange. I knew about the Vauxhall Adam before, but had no idea they'd done a performance version of it so I asked if I could have it for a review and see if Vauxhall's baby hatch could be any fun to drive with a little bit of power.
At 150bhp, could this Supermini be a viable alternative for people buying a MINI Cooper or entry level Abarth?

Found this after watching your more recent drive of the Adam S. I think they're a great looking car but were the start of new cars going ridiculously expensive. I think this was £17.5k which for something smaller than the Corsa was a lot of money. Then again, the Fiat 500 variants, the DS3, and the Audi A1 etc were of a similar price point. Sadly the penny pinching is obvious, eg Vauxhall didn't bother relocating the heated seat switch to the drivers side for UK markets. By the way, I love watching your older videos. None of the flashy graphics or sponsors, just a man reviewing a car and going in to great detail. I get sponsorship and video gloss help you stand out but these old videos are gold.

Love the video and the car Bought one for my wife for our 40th wedding anniversary that sounds like we have plenty of money ,I am not so sure about that! Its one of the quickest cars I have ever driven ,Think I am in a position to say that as in my younger days I was South East Rally Champion, and had a Chevette HS and an Opel Ascona 400 road car sadly neither were mine. When I bought the car as a surprise gift they gave me nearly 3 grand discount,I just kept quiet, but the best bit is or name is Adams.

we have the 1.4 non turbo'ed version and I love it . pulls away quickly and is very comfortable , yes unless your a baby you wont fit in the back but as its my wifes she only needs it to get to work in . Much nicer drive than the Corsa ( NON ) Limited Edition she had before . As for size its actually taller than my Mitsubishi Lancer

Really informative video mate, I think the Abarth aftermarket tuning market would also make it more of a popular choice than this but then again I don't really know much about these cars until this video and of course I would be biased towards Abarth lol

+Stef ABtv You are absolutely right mate the range of tuning bits does help things like the ST and 500/595 popular. Although doesn't help when they all wind up looking the same!

Great review, the first I've seen of yours. I am considering it as a downgrade from my 200bhp Civic type R because I want something cheaper to run , still fun and newer than my civic and has a TURBO! I really like that is something different. The Japanese manufactures have a long history of small capacity turbo engines that can have the wick turned up. The Toyota Glanza is a pocket rocket. I'd love to see what a remap could get in this Vauxhall.

Did you borrow one of James May's shirts? I never knew Vauxhall made a fast version of the Adam I always thought of it as their equivalent to a Ka.

I like the Adam for its looks but I couldn't put the seat back far enough and I'm not really a tall guy at 5'11. I might make that sacrifice though for a pokey one someday. Being a bit obscure is a big plus for me!

I got to drive one a while back and I really do like it but agree the back seats were entirely pointless with me being 6'1 there was no space in the back even for a toddlers legs.

I'm in the mood to buy A fiesta st200 on a 16/17 plate they are about 17k as low as 14k. For A Adam s now you can get one for about 9k my good lady drives a blue Adam 1.2 energised

Dipping into the back catalogue for some small car advice. Nice to see the evolution of the channel.. re the car, being a 1.4 t, it's very easy to get near 200bhp for not a lot of money. Rather this than an Abatth too.

Can you add subtitles next time you wear that shirt please dude, It was so loud I had to turn my volume up to 11? The car looks quite good, if that's going to be people's first car, some people are pretty lucky. £20k is a bit much and it's a vauxhall but it looks good.

Most adams'tho cute'in looks to my eyes, a bit underpowered. However, I managed to buy a 1.0 ltr 3cyl turbo model 115 bhp, they're a bit rare apparently. It's 6 speed. Pokey smooth, cheap to run. Overall its the one to get. 👍

Comparing this to an st is a bit redundant, as it's in a way lower insurance category, which, if it's a first car, is important. I doubt many would be able to afford to insure an st as a first car. That said 20k is mad for one of these. Good review though.

+Diarmuid Marsden I dont think either would be a first car but probably a first "fun" car after a couple of years driving. It would definitely seem quick after some 80hp eco mobile

Diarmuid Marsden this is on my list for first cars, £8,900 with the bucket seats and 19,870 miles. Just need to wait till pay day to put my deposit down (unless I get persuaded otherwise)

I got to drive a Corsa VXR and while it's a good car the stock exhaust needs to go there's no excuse for a hot hatch like that to be quiet :D

Wet Lettuce the new corsa VXR? They're extremely good sounding for a stock car, they come with a Remus exhaust system. I think you're on about a corsa D VXR? They're too quiet I agree with that one but not the new one.

You're right it was a Corsa D I drove it was in toxic sludge green that kind of asks for noisy exhausts. Not heard or even seen the new Corsa VXR in person yet will have to keep my eyes peeled.

Wet Lettuce yeh they're really quiet stock them, they need an after market exhaust on definitely. The new ones sound good for an stock exhaust, have a look on RU-vid there's a few videos of the sound.

Honest I love the Adam, but I’d take you in my mapped 1.9 cdti Zafira (can do a “stage 1” Fiesta eco boost 170-180 ish bhp) don’t knock the Zafira I love my daily and I have a Mk3 Focus RS! Ahah

First of all, i'd like to say i enjoy your reviews quite a lot. You really seem to know a lot more about cars than probably 90% of people (shown by your love for Lotus :D) However, even mentioning this overdesigned atrocity in the same sentence as the Abarth/FIAT or Fiesta gives me a headache. Both are very good looking cars in their own way. Seriously, you can imagine the board meeting at Opel headquarters going something like "Yes we need a car for ze hip young people. Steal everyzing you can from ze ozer companies wizout risking a lawsuit!" The outcome was a car with zero personality and eyecancer inducing looks in my oppinion. I'm sorry about the rant, i'm very passionate in my hate for the Adams design :D

I was given a Vauxhall Adam 1.2 litre courtesy car when I took my Lotus Elise in for a service. The first time I got in it I thought "what a pile of sh*te" - it didn't help that the driver before me must have been incredibly short so they'd maxed the seat up high, and up close to the wheel. After adjustment I still thought "sh*te", and being used to a car with 0-60 of 4.2s, of course I was unimpressed with the performance. In fairness though, it wasn't bad on the motorway, pretty easily doing 85mph. I was so happy to get back into my Lotus Elise though. Next time I'll take the train or hire a more fun car if the garage can't offer me something better! What were Vauxhall thinking calling it the "Adam"?

Because Thats a rebaged Opel and the Founder of Opel was Adam Opel. They named the Car after him

Abarth for the sound, Abarh for the design, Abarth for the history, Abarth for the sports seats, Abarth for the funny drive...Abarth FOR EVER!! Mini is good but the last version is too big. Adam? No thanks, it's very ugly. Opel is ridicolous, without sense for the sport cars.
