VCO Lab Sound Cathedral

A simple demo of one type of sound that can be produced by my new polyphonic VCO Lab module that was released as part of Venom version 2.8. This polyphonic drone has so many shifting harmonics and timbres, yet all the sound comes from the mix output of a single VCO Lab. The only processing after the VCO is some Galactic reverb courtesy of Air Windows.
This patch highlights one of the unusual features of VCO Lab - the ability to apply both hard and soft sync at the same time. The soft sync is driven at half the rate of the hard sync, and is responsible for generating the delicious bass tones.

This patch is available for download in my Venom 2.8.0 release announcement at community.vcvrack.com/t/venom-release-announcements-latest-version-2-8-0/22411

Great module and beautiful patch. Downloaded it, mapped a midi knob to the pulse module frequency control and kept finding wonderful new patterns. The vco was chaotic as I spun the knob then settled on each new frequency and became calm as I stopped modulating for a rest. Easy to get lost in it.

Whoa! This is an awesome drone pad. I'm gonna try VCO Lab soon. It will come in handy for this month's Starship challenge on the VCV Rack Forum.

Yes - thanks! I noticed that dustractor already used it in his submission, but only to do basic sine modulating sine linear FM. I hope to create a submission exploring some of the more exotic capabilities.

This is a really great drone sound. I've never noticed or used the VCO LAB & POLY OFFSET modules before and am very curious to see what they do in my existing patches. p.s. Nice visual arrangement, btw. Thought you were showing off a new VST instrument for a moment. Took me a minute to realize I was looking at a VCV Rack patch.

Thanks - glad you like it. VCO Lab is a brand new module that hit the VCV Library yesterday! (see pinned comment) It is a joy to play with. Poly Offset was released March 11 this year. The very first release of the Venom plugin was February 2024 with 8 modules. I am up to 45 modules now and counting.

@@DaveBenhamMusic Impressive! I'm a big fan of the Venom modules and have a handful I use in almost every patch, particularly the mix modules (MIX-4 ST, FADE, MUTE, SEND). A couple months ago, I tested every mixer-related module in VCV Rack and found the Venom series to be the most flexible 4 my needs, with the least CPU usage, and smallest rack footprint.

@@DaveBenhamMusic I've already downloaded it and manually recreated your patch. Not exactly the same drone voice (I eyeballed your param settings), but close enough to see how I can start to use VCO Lab in my own patches. It's a unique and creative module. Thank you! 🙏

@@MeditativeInstruments I forgot to tell you about the source of the visual arrangement. It is a relatively new module called Purfenator from DanT (Dan Tilley). It makes it simple to emulate the visual style of Purf (Urs Basteck).

@@DaveBenhamMusic That's a cool one! I like how you can add a custom BG image as well. Seems like a very nice "finishing" module for patch aesthetics. p.s. Another cool aesthetic trick: Use "Greenscreen" by "Questionable Modules" & set its BG color to "Dark Grey." This essentially converts the BG image of the rack-rails into a solid color and is MUCH less cluttered, aesthetically. Now, instead of using module blanks (which use CPU), just put 1-2 empty spaces between blocks of modules and get the same benefit. Infinite "blanks" for no additional CPU cost + easier module arrangement.

great stuff! love all you do but can i ask you how you made it looks that it is in a seperate case? i opened the patch and i am trying to figure out where that option is but to no avail thanks in advance! (edit sorry found it in the comments)

For others that missed the buried comment - It is a relatively new module called Purfenator from DanT (Dan Tilley). It makes it simple to emulate the visual style of Purf (Urs Basteck).
