VDJ POI Editor and Prepping Your Tracks

This week I'm focusing on DJs who are just getting acquainted with the software and/or a controller and discussing the purpose of the POI (point of interest) editor in Virtual DJ 8.
The goal here is to show that taking the time to set these strategic points in your music can make you a better DJ with more dynamic transitions and sets.

@@DJRachelLynch I hope you will continue with this series. You are a great teacher and you provide detailed explanations. I love VDJ and feel it has way more to offer than the “true” DJ software…..🤣 just kidding… but my Serato friends tell me that all the time. My personal favorites is the ability to add drums to add a kick or add hihats etc to a song in order to create a different vibe or to fill a sound that is lacking

If I want to create an edit which plays while I'm dancing in the middle of the floor - with no one at a DJ booth to do a live mix - does VDJ have a way to do that? Although ideally I would be able to mix on the fly, I'm mostly a dancer and dance teacher, so I edit music in advance and export the edits as mp3s. The POI editor feels terribly awkward for that purpose. I'm better off using something like Magix Vegas (a video editor - but only using audio tracks). (I use it because I have access to it and I'm familiar with it.) Does VDJ have a way to do what I need without using the POI editor? For example, I want to cut out two sections from the middle of a song, and I want the whole song to play at 95% speed (and it's not preceded by a song with a bpm around 95%; in fact it's not preceded by anything). I might also want to overlay a clip from another track. I have a Deezer subscription and many Deezer playlists, so I want to use VDJ if possible for this. Can VDJ do what I need (as stated above)?

For what you’re describing I’d recommend using the VDJ app which will let you mix and change things remotely (away from your laptop). Or use the auto mix feature you can customize how and when it mixes.

@DJ Rachel.....How do I cut out a blank spot at the beginning of a saved loop in the POI editor? I have a saved loop created, but it starts a beat or 2 before the spot where my first hotcue is strategically placed.

Sounds like your beat grid might be off. Make sure that is adjusted correctly so the software knows where the loop should lock in. Also check your loop settings. You may have “smart loop” engaged or something like that.

How do the cue points from mixed in key compare to defaults from VDJ? VDJ seems bad at choosing cue points.

A lot of people use both in conjunction. I haven’t done a side by side comparison to give you a well versed answer, but I’m assuming mixed in key will do a better job because it’s a specialized software designed to analyze music and it’s harmonic components. Unlike VDJ, it’s not trying to do everything. It does a few things VERY well. I’m assuming the algorithm used is more sophisticated and will generate better results, but remember this is all conjecture because I haven’t done a side-by-side myself.
