Overloading mp3's is my biggest problem,then it becomes a bigger problem when I keep delaying the task of cleaning them up. Its better to download everything to a hard drive on. a desktop then copy them over to a backup. Then go through and select songs you play often, like you said "put them on your working drive". I think spotify will solve this problem down the road as connecting to the internet gets easier. Another super video Rachel ! :)

The playlist folder in vdj is useful also. Maybe more useful for some than virtual folders, since playlist has track order

Hi Rachel, I have watched SO MANY of your videos! You are fantastic! I learn so much from you and I've been a wedding DJ over 20 years. I have my Evolve 50's and Virtual DJ because of you. I wish I could afford your Ape Labs lights. They are too cool! I watched a video you did on Vlogging. You make so much sense for all the reasons you do it. I think I'm going to give it a try (even though I don't like me on video). My question is how do you get to play popular music on your RU-vid channel? Is it because you put the artist/title on the screen? OH...and I absolutely love your Virtual DJ explainer videos...so helpful! Thank you for all you do. I know it's a lot of hard work.

Thank you so much for supporting the channel. Always happy to help! I appreciate your kindness so much. You can post popular music, you just can’t monetize it. It goes against copy right. So if you want to share your mixes I recommend using something like Mixcloud. Enjoy your weekend.

Great Video Rachel thanks now all I have to do is get rid of all my duplicate files on my 5 external different hard drives and compile one master hard drive and clone copies to my other hard drives.

Database management is one of the most tedious tasks but it feels good to have a refined and performance-based harddrive. GOOD LUCK! Thanks so much for watching!

Something to also think about is how/can you redo the order within the virtual or any other folders in VDJ

Do you still use external drive for djing, I am new and just starting up looking for new ideas
@DJRachelLynch

Yes. My main database is on a 4TB hard drive and I keep enough music on my computer in case the hard drive ever fails to get through most events.

So what if you use an external hard drive with all your music on it - plus I want to copy all the information on one laptop to another. - In other words I use a external for all my music but have 2 laptops. One is for a backup so I want all the cues/tags/covers playlist/history/virtual folders all info copied to the back up laptop just in case I need it at a gig. For some reason I have a Virtual DJ folder in my documents and one on my external hard drive.

djpaulywood I use an external hard drive. I’m not sure what your question is. External hard drives would work the same as having music directly in your computer. Virtual folders don’t affect your hard drive directly, but can be found in the VirtualDJ database. They allow you to organise your music library without moving the actual songs on your hard disk or creating duplicate files. A song can be added to multiple filter folders (E.g: 80's and Party), but there will only be one actual file on your hard disk, saving disk space. It's very important that you backup your VirtualDJ database on a regular basis so that you do not loose the information contained in it if your computer is damaged, lost or stolen or its hard disk fails, gets corrupted, wiped by a virus, etc. Your VirtualDJ database contains BPM, comments and other information for your songs. The VirtualDJ database can be found in My Documents\VirtualDJ on PC and /users/YOURNAME/Documents/VirtualDJ or /users/YOURNAME/Library/VirtualDJ for new installations of VirtualDJ v7.0.3 and above on Mac. Your VirtualDJ folder also contains your playlists, track play history and any custom skins, effects and other plugins that you have installed. You should also back these up if they are important to you. If you are NetSearch user (Premium Member), you should also backup the Cache folder that contains your cached songs that you have downloaded. If you have customised any mappings for MIDI controllers or your keyboard, these can be found in the Mappers folder. If you are using external drives, you should also backup the database found at the root of each external drive. Please ensure that you backup your entire music collection. Make sure that you copy your backup to DIFFERENT media from what you normally use, e.g: A USB flash drive or backup external hard disk, and preferably keep it in a separate location. Keeping two separate backups is advisable (One to take with you to your gig for emergency use, and another to keep at home.)

Yeah I have 3 backups of my collection of music videos. See if I can explain it easier. I have 2 laptops (one as a back up) and one external hard drive - I want to have a clone (of my VDJ info cue/playlist/folders etc information) on my back up laptop just in case. I want to clone that information weekly.

djpaulywood How to : Copy your music collection into the internal or external Hard Drive of your new computer to EXACTLY the same location with the same folder structure. Copy the entire /Users/YourUsername/VirtualDJ folder from your old computer to the new one. (except from the settings.xml file. The VirtualDJ folder contains the Database, Playlists, History along with your Sampler Banks, Plugins, Skins etc. You may choose which ones you need to keep (copy) and which not. Database Contains all the track information of VirtualDJ Music Library such as BPM, HotCues, Comments etc. Those are stored in the \Users\YourUsername\Documents\VirtualDJ\database.xml file Virtual, Favorite and Filter Folders. The special created folders of VirtualDJ are kept in the \Users\YourUsername\Documents\VirtualDJ\Folders folder Playlists. Playlists (m3u files) are kept in the \Users\YourUsername\Documents\VirtualDJ\Playlists folder Track Listing History. History files are kept in the \Users\YourUsername\Documents\VirtualDJ\History folder Etc. If you use any external hard drives, these have their own separate local database (in /VirtualDJ folder), so you do not need to do anything with these (Unless you are transferring to a Mac, which cannot write to PC NTFS formatted external drives without installing special 3rd party software.) The settings (preferences) of VirtualDJ are kept in the settings.xml file in \Users\YourUsername\Documents\VirtualDJ folder. It is suggested not to transfer this file to your new computer. The settings.xml file will be automatically created on your new computer when VirtualDJ launches for the first time. You will then need to manually change any settings to your preferences. If the file is copied and issues occur on first launch, delete the file and re-launch. How it works … For versatility and flexibility, VirtualDJ‘s database system segments the database to each drive attached to the system. The data is stored in the database files. VirtualDJ 8 analyzes the data about the sound track, song length, BPM, key, etc., relative path to the file stored on the drive. The split database design provides users of external hard drives the ability to COLD or HOT SWAP drives between single and/or multiple systems. This allows for multiple DJs of a club, venue, or mobile setup to utilize a single VirtualDJ installation and not have different logins in order to maintain separate, unique databases to each DJ. The DJ can just walk in, plug in the external device, and begin playing. Username : As you notice from the paths that VirtualDJ uses, the {username} is critical. This means that if you need to backup your database from a C Drive of one computer and restore the same database to another computer, your tracks may not carry its info, since the database will be looking at an non-existing path.

I think I messed up my setting file sometime last month :(
@chrisfoxevententertainment7689
@@DJRachelLynch and DJpaulywood you can format your external hard drives to exfat which is transferrable between Mac and PC before you copy your music files to that external hard drive so it can be read my both Mac And PCs not other software is needed to read if the hard drive is formatted in ExFat.
