Today we show you how to bump the timing on your VE pumped 12 valve cummins. This mod will allow for an increase in overall mid to top end performance and fuel mileage increase. For me, I personally found that it cleaned up my smoke a bit and gave me better high rpm performance. We will see how it does for mileage.

I know it's been a couple of years since you've posted this video, but it's seriously good stuff, and I wanted to give my $0.02. When the Cummins 6BT was used in the Dodge application in the 89-93 trucks, Dodge retarded the injection timing in order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions to satisfy EPA requirements for the time. Injection timings for industrial applications for the same engine are more advanced. Advancing the injection timing by rotating the injection pump housing by 1/8" was a rough but effective way to recover economy, power, and throttle response. You may also find that it'll reduce EGT. Great videos, and thanks for doing them!

I have the identical truck.. I'm swapping pumps today, I think i was able to jump a tooth without taking the cover off

Not good to twist the injector lines, they can split and leak, later lol. If you loosen the lines at the back of the pump you can turn the pump with just a push of the hand.

Good to know! I didn't push the injector that much but it might be worth loosening them off and re-tightening them now.

Did you get a noticeable difference in the seat of the pants?

Most definitely. My truck is gutless and slow without it, and noticeably faster with it bumped up. Get about 3mpg better fuel economy too

Hey man after timing the pump my truck starts smoking white truck every time I start the truck
@walkertravis86

got my truck with the timing advanced like this and my smokes bad white smoke on start up. Thinking of taking it back to stock. does it reduce the power much

Timing is wrong, make sure firing order is correct. I was able to cross some lines with white no start.

I also would have jumped the pump gear advanced one tooth
@BolteBuilt
@BolteBuilt 4 года назад
Jesse Rasso I have heard of people doing this instead of twisting the pump. I thought about doing it to mine before I put it in my truck. My gear stock is on the “E” marker. By advancing it which way do you go? There is a “C” to the drivers side of the “E” and a couple teeth to the passenger side is “D”.

Hey Tyler, how the hell did you ever get sockets on those two difficult nuts? I've been at it for an hour and am not even coming close. I can get a socket started on the one between the pump and the block but it's angled too much to grab. The one up underneath I can't even get close on. Did you use long extensions on both of them, and did you use a universal joint in there somewhere? I'm about ready to give up.
@OvensGarage
@OvensGarage 2 года назад
Haha, if memory serves me right I believe there were many wobbly extensions involved and maybe a universal and some curved wrenches.
@garylewis327
@garylewis327 2 года назад
@@OvensGarage Thanks! I bought some curved wrenches tonight and will give it another go tomorrow.

@@OvensGarage Ok, I got it done. For anyone else who comes along with the same issue, here's what worked for me: For the upper nut on the engine side of the pump, a curved (s-shaped) 13mm closed-end 12-point wrench worked great. Just enough room to get it on the nut and turn it one notch at a time. For the lower nut under the pump that you can't even see, I removed the throttle linkage and battery so I could get my head in there to see exactly where it was. Then I put together a 13mm, 12-point, 3/8" drive socket, a 3/8" to 1/4" drive adapter, a long 1/4" drive extension, a 1/4" to 3/8" drive adapter, then my 3/8" drive ratchet. The 1/4" extension was narrow enough to allow the socket to fit over the nut (tried the 3/8" long extension first but couldn't get the correct angle to get it on there). The upper nut on the driver's side of the pump and the lower 10mm bolt are not an issue - standard tools to loosen those.

@@garylewis327 thanks Gary! Glad you got it. Did you notice a difference in performance after doing it?
@garylewis327
@garylewis327 2 года назад
@@OvensGarage Tyler - yes, before this I had a little lag out of the gate but it just gets up and goes now. I do seem to have a little more smoke than before, which I don't quite understand, but I'm going to turn the smoke screw out a little next. I'm going on a trip next weekend so should have a better idea on overall performance and mpg after that.

Is this the same as turning the fuel screw?

Lol no

No, not at all. This is way better. Much more noticeable power increase, and helps improve fuel economy and EGTs, unlike turning the fuel screw up
