As I commented on the actual video of this performance : A roman statue more than a greek god as I read in comments. A very Michael-Angelo's David lookalike, the lock of hair, the gracious neck and the veins pointing out whilst singing, and then the silly shorts and sneakers he commented on many times 😀 Such a beautiful character!

This performance he gave when asked the day before to replace an artist that couldn't come and perform. Jakub arrived with his friend the pianist thinking it was just a radio program (by France Musique, french state radio for musical programs, you can see sitting in the back Freredic Lodeon, a famous producer and cello player). Though, what a performance. He's an angel

I am a bit of an opera fan but came to it as an adult from a working-class family. I don't have an in-depth knowledge of it as music. My thoughts on it tend to be experiential or academic but from the perspective of a sociologist rather than a music historian. Baroque singing has come to be easily my favourite. There is something in it that, while it does pop up in later music, is missing more often. There's a kind of raw fire in baroque music. It is like the music is only just barely under the control of the singer; a feeling it might break away at any moment. For me, this feature is lost in the icy but often beautiful elegance of the classical period. I think it has a brief resurgence in the early 19th century and that is ended as opera is changed from being art with a popular/aristocratic audience into art with a primarily bourgeois audience.

Good idea, to mark a hard copy with breathing points. I'm terrible at forgetting to breathe when I sing this aria, and then I completely run out of breath during one of the long phrases. I'd never given the sound-effect of 'sospirerò' a thought, but you are absolutely right.

"seriously one of the greatest singers" - no offence to Mr Orlinski who is enjoying a marvellous career at the moment, but you definitely need to listen to more singers! Among countertenors I can think of very very many who are technically more accomplished, more emotionally invested, and more beautiful-toned than him. Michael Chance, Gerard Lesne, Derek Lee Ragin, Hugh Cutting, Andreas Scholl, Iestyn Davies for a start..
@user-xs6hi9tr5b
@user-xs6hi9tr5b 8 месяцев назад
Let everyone have their own opinion... Your favourites do not have to be someone else's favourites. Jakub has something which none of the mentioned above has... A clearly masculine voice colour. His technique is also different and he is not a typical operatic singer (most likely you do not like it... but it is your business and opinion). Fantastic Andreas Scholl is most likely the closest in sound to Orlinski, much more experienced and much longer in singing. However, Orlinski is someone who cannot be compared to anyone else in terms of voice colour. His voice is just unique. They way he communicates with the audience is fantastic and unique too. On top of that he is very charismatic and... innovative. He has crushed the fossilised frames of baroque music interpretation showing that this music is for everyone, not only for the narrow circle of experts. Many will not like it. Many will criticise him but... he still does what he feels is right for him. One must have a lot of courage to go on like him against all the odds... Saying that I totally agree that all the countertenors you mentioned above are great and tremendously accomplished singers and artists (to me especially Andreas Scholl). In art and its perception, the personal preference plays a very important (if not decisive) role.
@olialto7
@olialto7 8 месяцев назад
@@user-xs6hi9tr5b I don't mind people enjoying Orlinkski's singing, or having him as their favourite at all. I agree, it's absolutely subjective and personal what appeals to an individual and I wouldn't take that away from anyone if I could. What I have an issue with is the, to me, exaggerated comments like "seriously one of the best singers" or, for that matter "he has crushed the fossilised frames of baroque music." Do you really think that he is the only singer that sings Baroque music in a way that brings it out of the era in which it was created and into the present moment?! I would politely suggest that that is massively unfair to a lot of fantastically talented and hard-working musicians. I believe that Orlinkski is a good singer with a solid, if inflexible technique (I don't hear an effective trill from him, for example - not that that is uncommon, or the ability to sing a connected absolute pianissimo at the top of his range) and a sort of sound that is often 'held' in the typical countertenor fashion producing a slight 'honking' quality. I think the roots of this may be in his physicality. Taut muscles across the stomach can be an issue in vocal flexibility, however desirable they make the possessor! Don't misunderstand me, I am not a 'hater' - I genuinely wish him all the best. I don't grudge him any of his success, fans, or personal happiness. I'm pleased to see countertenors doing well as I'm a fan of that voice group. The issue I have is with the fans themselves. I don't believe the hype and I think that people are too easily influenced by a pretty face, an attractive packaging, slick soulless media presentation (they're less interested in the music/art than what they can make out of it). I listen to him without watching the videos and, for me, there's something missing, and I fear that others watch the videos and their ears tune out. I couldn't care less about how masculine somebody sounds if they can't dig into the music and give it the life I believe it deserves.
@user-xs6hi9tr5b
@user-xs6hi9tr5b 8 месяцев назад
@@olialto7 If for someone Jakub is one of the best singers ,why should not he be? That person has the right to say that... No matter if you personally like it. I do not have problems with his trills... I would say even more, they are very clear, very instrumentally sounding due to his use of straight tone. I have heard many of his CD recording... I do not miss anything. Obviously, he is charismatic (for some also very handsome) and when you see him on stage, it always adds something because he has a fantastic stage presence. I like his emotions which are quite straightforward, not overcomplicated, without unnecessary exaggeration. I am also an educated musician, so more or less, I know what I am talking about (at least I hope so... lol). I am not an oracle though. The personal taste plays the leading role in finding your favourite artists. If you look for typically operatic artists, Jakub is not the one who is going to convince you. There are many fantastic artists who will meet your requirements and satisfy your taste. There is always a freedom of choice here and those who work hard may get lots of recognition too. Jakub has not stolen anything from them. The effect of digging into the music is also the reflection of someone personal taste. It will be different for different people. A masculine sounding countertenor is a rarity. It makes Jakub special in a way. Well... Let be ourselves in our personal tastes, perception and expectations and we all will be happy and satisfied:-)
