I'm reading "Hõbevalge" right now and a friend recommended this documentary to me. It was very enlightening - especially listening how the languages gradually started sounding more and more like estonian. Don't get me wrong, they were all beautiful, but...I have never heard the Karjala language before. I never realized how pretty it sounds.
It's really amazing how different and diverse the Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian people's languages and lifestyles are from their cousins in Russia. And they still have their origins in common.
There is a DVD set with all 5 of Lennart Meri documentaries dealing with the finno-ugric people. Subtitles available in Finnish, English and Russian. Unfortunately I cannot post links to the webstore, nor find a button to send you a PM on RU-vid. So if you wish the link, send me an email to uku.pyttsep at hotmail.
