Today, we're zooming in on a groundbreaking study that comes from Stanford University and was recently published in JAMA Network Open. The researchers put a vegan diet head-to-head with an omnivorous diet in twenty-two pairs of identical twins. The buzz around this study has been immense, sparking conversations everywhere-from social media to professional circles. Adding to the excitement, this research forms the basis of a new Netflix documentary called "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment."
In this episode of my Health Bites series, I discuss the many conflicts of interest, funding sources, and hidden agendas that were not fully disclosed but could have had a major hand in clouding the study's conclusions and real-world applications. We’ll also get into the Netflix docuseries itself-what they got right vs. what they got wrong, as well as the Functional Medicine approach to diet and how we can feed our bodies to create health while taking care of the planet in a healthy, sustainable, and ethical way.

Overview of the Stanford study design and findings (11:57 / 10:07)
Issues with the study design (27:10 / 24:10)

I was vegan for years- vegetarian for years too- I did not have meat for a decade. I focused on Whole Foods and was not a “French fry vegan”. I always said if it affected my health I would stop but I was very strong about not hurting animals… I ended up with severe deficiencies. I felt like I was going to die. I went down hill fast and went to multiple ER’s who couldn’t figure it out because they didn’t test for the deficiencies I had. I ate meat and started ordering my own lab tests which confirmed deficiencies. Long story short I immediately started eating meat and now I will never stop. It took 2+ years to recover and I’m finally better. I will always eat meat now and I will stick with functional medicine who actually does the right tests.

Im an ecologist and i run a self sufficient farm. We eat meat, but our animals are very well taken care of and are killed in the most humane way. Now heres the thing, with the exception of chicken, most animals are killed humanely even in industrial settings. The issue is the environment they are raised in. There are many humane farms like mine that are clean, the animals have large pasture space, and are fed a healthy diet. If you are worried about the care of the animals, i would suggest doing some research into places, and maybe even look into local farms in your area.

If you have no compassion for animals Dr. Then you are not going to care about the ethics that underpin vegans avoiding animal products….and the terrible suffering by which they are produced. Modern cultivation methods often leave their environment devoid of biodiversity - severely reduced or no populations of soil microbes, invertebrates, insects, lizards, snakes, rabbits, rodents, ground nesting birds, etc. This is entirely different for pasture raised animals; they co-habitat with a diverse set of wild animals and support complete ecosystems. Is it ethical to eat an only plant-based diet that destroy habitats for vast amounts of organisms (including vertebrates which I presume is where your ethical concerns lie)? Fortunately many of us have the option of eating pasture-raised animals that have lived a good life and died a humane death, while supporting the habitat and lives of many other animals.

If everyone becomes vegan and we are eating the foods the animals eat we are now in competition with the animals for food. How will that help or destroy our ecosystem? Veganism kills more wild life then eating pasture raised animals and is less nutrient dense then consuming animal foods. Our bodies require animal protein but not the amount that we are consuming today. Plants were only consumed during periods of starvation when meat was not available or for healing our bodies. Our bodies needs change accordingly with age and the quality of our microbiome. Our ancestors consumed ethically sourced meat on occasion, participated in periods of intermittent fasting, and used plants for healing not nutrition. We were never vegan as a species and animal foods contains ten times more of the nutrients our bodies need and do not contain anti nutrients and toxins of plants.

Now listening further to this video, it sounds like the study really was biased, and it also sounds like they didn't give either side a fair shake! As a long time vegetarian/vegan (35+ years), the dietary changes that I've felt the most significant positive change from have been: 1) Getting off dairy, 2) Getting off sugar, and wheat, 3) Getting off artificial additives, and 4) Adding in WAY more vegetables and also fermented foods. Obviously, these are all things that meat eaters can do as well. Even though I'm a veggie, I don't think meat eating is necessarily unhealthy. I just think all of us could benefit from more vegetables, and also from cleaner foods.

P.S. I just wanted to add that I respectfully disagree with the doctor that vegan diets require supplementation. I think the key to a health plant-based diet is to eat a wide variety of foods. The problem is that too many vegans are eating vegan junk foods like the fake meats, etc. which are just empty calories.

Agreed. From at nutritional viewpoint I don’t think eating meat is unhealthy as long as it’s not processed and it’s not done in excessive amounts. It is certainly a nutrient dense food and has meant a lot to humans historically, especially in colder climates. As you say, there are significantly more important factors to change in people’s diet when it comes to health. There are of course other factors to eating meat that I don’t think is good for either the planet or our mental health. But that’s a different matter.

Some people can be vegan, and others need some meat, plain and simple. But what we don't need is junk. Start by cutting out sugar and foods and beverages that contain sugar. Initially it will be hard because just about everyone is addicted to the other white powder to some extent. Also, it takes awhile for taste buds to reset to their original sensitivity. Try it. If you fail, try again, and again. Eventually you will succeed and feel a 100 percent better.

Im an ecologist. We are omnivores. In fact, most mammals aren't true herbivores. Did you know deer birds? A lot of birds. Its terrifying. Anyway, that being said, with supplements, being vegan is completely fine. The issue is research gaps. The study that found red meat increases heart disease, failed to take into account that people who eat red meat tend to also eat that meat with fries and a coke. The anti vegan side also fails to take into account that even though we aren't vegan as a species, we are also very smart and created supplements. So, in my scientific opinion, the best diet is a natural diet of whole foods that has a wide variety of food stuff. And if you're vegan, just get your blood work done and take supplements if you need to.

Adventists aren’t strictly vegan, they are recommended to eat a vegetarian diet. Some eat vegan but I believe most eat fish, dairy and eggs (btw I’ve known some personally). They are also permitted to eat meat if it’s prepared according to Biblical health laws. And blue zones eat meat, fish, etc., only in a lower amount and more naturally produced than western diet. So yes if you eat healthier and cleaner and less meat you’ll probably be healthier, that’s what traditional Chinese medicine espouses, protein should be about 10-20% of diet and dairy only %5. For the first 4-5 years being vegan (mostly plant based) I felt much better but after 8 years I was sicker than a dog. So incredibly deficient in D & B vitamins. Thankfully I’ve found a happy medium for my body type and I feel well.

He actually promotes a very plant forward diet - he talks about how important and healthy plants are in this video and many others. But not everyone has good health outcomes on a vegan diet, including him (and me). He was a healthy vegan, and still had sensitivities and deficiencies on the diet. He makes the point that the study design isn’t as strong as the authors would have you think. And the macros for the omnivore diet were closer to the SAD diet than not. I think he is a proponent for individual health - and he’s not dogmatic in his thoughts on nutrition. You could also argue that the authors are proponents of vegan diets (which there is evidence that this is true) and that influenced how they designed and carried out the study. Stick to simple principles - eat whole food (animal, plant, or both), cut sugar and processed food. Those are things everyone should do, but many don’t.

Tempeh is not a "meat alternative". It's tempeh. Fermented soy. Widely consumed for a long, long time. Organic tempeh is one of the most nutritious, complete foods out there. The fermentation nulls the phytoestrogen and antinutrient concerns. Lets not act like conventional meat, all versions including fish, bought from a store, restaurant etc isnt highly processed. Plus the meat industries are arguably the most destructive entities on the planet. Any diet exclusively animal/plant can lead to deficiencies. An all animal foods diet will be tough to deliver enough vitamins c & e, fiber, boron, and perhaps magnesium & antioxidants. Yes the funding of this study is inexcusable, objectives were problematic, and filming to make a doc during the study is a red flag. But what I hope these studies achieve is getting people to eat more plants and consider where they're grown & what you're giving money to. Every nutritionist I've ever heard who isnt dogmatic about a particular diet, thus the most trustworthy, preach: --plants should constitute the diet majority, and soak and/or cook raw foods --knock out excessively processed foods & oils --be a meticulous ingredient checker, and know your sensitivities --be weary of nonorganic foods due to more toxins eg pesticides, coatings --moderate sugar esp the non naturally occurring, but dont load up on naturally occurring sugars & starches either in one sitting

Hi Dr. Mark, love your podcasts and thanks for your efforts to influence food policy and to improve the quality of our ultraprocessed sugar laden Western diet. Just a suggestion , at times you speak alittle too fast running your words together which can make you hard to understand, especially if you are using medical jargon. This is meant as constructive feedback. I think what i see is that sometimes you are so enthousiastic that the words come out alittle too fast.

Oh MY, I have listened to several of your vedios that were excellent! But this one nearly gave me an anxiety attack. WAY too much information, way too fast. Anyone who can sort all this out is a better woman than me. Obviously you are promoting a carnivore diet, but cooked meat has no enzymes. The body needs help to make enough enzymes. All cooked food kills enzymes. But most food besides meat can be eaten raw. Animals also carry disease. You eat the diseases they have plus antibiotics, hormones. Very few folks can get good healthy meat. Most buy at the store, where they do all kinds of tricks, like changing dates, adding color ect. Just to sell and not throw away. The food supply is absolutely horrible. Sooo many additives. Not easy to survive, but But being aware, and growing some yourself, is about the best we can do. Raise your own animals. Please read " The China study". That's an eye opener!!!

If you follow the rest of Dr Hyman's work, you'll see that he actually promotes a paleo-vegan "pegan" diet - a wholefoods diet of mostly plants with meat in condiment proportions. This is not at all a carnivore diet which is exclusively animal products.

There’s not a single indigenous tribe on the planet that’s vegan. Vegans say as their gospel truth that the first people were vegan despite the fact vegan sources of protein are only abundant enough after the invention of farming. What seems the most deceptive of all to me though is that they say eating meat is morally wrong (wrong for people and not for carnivores that die without it). I used to be vegan for ethical reasons and I stopped when I realized Jesus is real. In the New Testament the disciples ate meat many times over. And He did the miracle of feeding the crowd with fish He manifested. If the creator of the universe ate meat (Luke 24:41-43) and served meat to the Apostles on many occasions, then I will not try to say I can create a new moral code that is unprecedented to the New Testament and simultaneously unprecedented to every indigenous tribe on the face of the earth.

@@gardyloo3093 I don't recall any verse of the Bible that suggests that a vegetarian diet is preferred. But I do know that God directed the children of Israel through Moses to do daily sacrifices for sin. They were also commanded to eat the meat of some of those sacrifices. They ate lamb on Passover holiday, which Jesus and His apostles also held.
@gardyloo3093
@gardyloo3093 7 месяцев назад
@@Arabzene Read my comment above again. I never claimed that it was referred to as, "preferred". No one is "commanded" to eat meat. The sacrifice existed in the old testament, but no one was commanded to eat it. The plant based diet is referred to in the old testament and the new testament. In the old testament, in one part as a method of strengthening soldiers. In the new testament (Romans 14) it is referred to as being something that some people do, and that meat eaters and vegans (not the exact verbiage used - I'm modernising it) should not bother each other about what they eat.

We classify ourselves as humans, but we haven’t figured out that some humans fuel differently, react differently to different foods because of genetics, and other factors science has not yet delved into. We as humans need to learn how to adapt, not only with food, but with each other and the information we continue to gather through studies. People like to attach to and idea that makes them feel good, but we don’t have to assume it’ll be right for someone else. Most of the planet doesn’t have their health figured out, there’s a more general fight to be fought, not involving whether or not vegetables or meat is good for you. It’s time to grow up, earth. Do your own research, feed yourself, and live your own life
