There are just so many options for vegetarian diet compared to the western diet in Asia because of the influence of Buddhism, monks. A lot of vegetarian food is very very delicious and very sustainable for anyone who wants to switch from eating meat. Great video!

When I was young I used the cross technique. But I everytime we had dinner at my por por's (maternal grandma in canto) house, I would get in trouble with her. She would tell me "not like that!" and she fastidiously taught me the correct technique, which I have used since. Sooooo....your sister is right. Hahaha!

As a vegetarian I really appreciated all of this! I generally don’t like “fake meat” substitutes I have never liked meat or fish textures or taste since I was a young child. Vegetarian didn’t even exist back then esp in France where I was born and grew up I was the weird fussy child /young girl that refused to eat animals. It’s very liberating that this now exist, france is slowly catching up, I don’t think we have a vegetarian/vegan Chinese restaurant as yet though! Hopefully it’s in the making ! For once I felt like I could try anything you tried and it felt nice to be included! Take care girls Sabrina 🇫🇷🇬🇧

Awesome video! I'm surprised about the filling for the spring rolls/egg rolls! I thought they're normally vegetable filled anyway! I kept wondering why other people were commenting about the Hong Kong style cafe but I just read the chinese subtitles. Absolutely agree with everyone. You wouldn't have dimsum at a 茶餐厅 aka Hong Kong style cafe. Hong Kong style cafes serve chinese western cuisines! Ex. Baked pork chop over rice. Please do a video on HK style cafes! I'm sure there are some great ones in Australia!!! Pet peeve here.. yum cha (饮茶) literally means drink tea so it's more of a verb than a noun... Rather than "Oh, should I eat vegan yum cha, or normal yum cha" it'd be "Oh, should I eat vegan dimsum, or normal dimsum". Dimsum (点心) is the noun and the name of the dishes, similar to tapas. Use of yum cha would be, "Do you want to go yum cha?"

Hey Blondie, your chopstick "cross-over" technique is just fine. I've done it all my youth life. Funny I changed over to the other technique after I came to the US (started with it being easier to show people how to pick up a cup with chopsticks that way.) As an oddball chopsticks holder in my family, I value my uniqueness, and now I am glad somebody else from another country does it that way.

Going to vegan restaurant, they dont specialise in a cuisine, for a creative dessert choice there was whipped coconut cream which made up their 'cheesecake', mousse and base for ice cream. This comes down to changing your expectations and loving something different (sadily the coconut was not sourced within 200km of the restaurant), its a nice treat if you want to avoid dairy.

tbh that’s just how much yum cha in sydney normally costs even when it isn’t vegan - could easily spend $70pp to get the ‘deluxe’ meat dishes too. For cheaper dumplings you’d have to go to one of those hole in the wall shops where you order from the menu instead of waiters bringing food around and the ones near Buddhist temples will have good vegan options too.

Hey Blondie - this episode reminded me a lot of your "Vegan for a week" episode. A lot of Westerners tend to think Veganism derived, started, proponent or even exclusive as a Western trend/ideology. While it is true the term "Veganism" was popularized in the Western world in recent years. The practice of it has been entrenched in Asia for centuries if not millenniums. I know you are aware of it's existence. But I wanted try to further clarify it a little if I could. The Chinese term it "Zhai" in pinyin. That is basically the equivalent of "Veganism", usually that is associated with a Buddhism undertone but not necessarily so. The practice of "Veganism" started from India which spread throughout Asia in different names. But for here I will only speak of in regards to veganism in China. You have noted in the "Vegan for a week" episode that in China there are a lot of vegetable dishes are topped off with bits of meats or cooked with animal fats. Which is true, because the Chinese are very diverse and many factors of history that plays a role in it's food. Many Chinese view vegetables as a dish itself, a (main) item/ingredient. It is hard for Westerners to understand because vegetables were never a main item in a meal as a meat would be for omnivores until "Veganism". By that I mean is Vegetable dishes being the center pieces of a meal for non vegan eaters not as a side dish. Most meat or omnivores cannot rap their head around the concept of that because most would not be interested in them. Not talking about side dishes like beet salads, squash soup or roasted potatoes etc., as they are not a center focus of a meal. Garnishing or offsetting with meat is to have balance in a dish. For example, it would be something similar to a savory dish having a pinch of sugar, a sweet dish with a pinch of salt or a meat dish with small garnish of herb or a little bit of vegetable to help balance it. This style of cooking/dishes is further attributed when China was going through really tough times in 1960s-1970s with famine and had very little to eat. Most Chinese were farmers so access to vegetables were most abundant while meat is less available. So for many vegetables were the main ingredient and they used little bits of meats to elevate or to balance it. It is meant to be a elevated or specialty vegetable dish. Even when you are telling them do not add meat or animal fats and they still do it, is because they view it as their elevated vegetable dish. And they are not charging extra for it, with or without, so they maybe thinking you are trying to save money on it. Unless you tell them you only eat "Zhai" or you tell them you are Buddhist. Then to them they understand it is not a cost factor. Telling them you are "Vegan" will not be comprehended as this term is a Western term so why would they. I guess I was trying to explain the "nuance" of why some cases of having meat products in what is thought to be just a vegetable dish. Of course there is also other various reasonings in individual cases. Much longer than it needs to be but wanted to speak about it since your "Vegan for a week" video. Anyways, keep up the great videos!
