As a person who've watched countless videos and podcasts on human health for years, I of course had to listen in on this one too. To my disappointment, this guy continued to find ways to go in different directions and avoid detailed info about what the main subject was about. Part of that was due to the questions asked of course. This guy is obviously VERY experienced and does have valueable knowledge to share for sure. The subject around m-TOR for example he barely commented and that's extremely important when it comes to longevity. Those many short dives into various subjects that most people already know or arent interrelated, is near time waste ( to most people)or topic for other videos in my opinion. A better interview can be made if there was a max time around half the length of this video where people can keep attention and where the meat and potatoes can be addressed. Even I, who've got an above average attention span, lost focus several times during this interview. A video with such an interesting topic but with so little contend about the actual topic, seems like classic click bait. Sorry for the negative response because I'm normally a big fan.

The things is- no one knows yet. This guy would give objective and subjective observations, but was doing a very good job of not making dogmatic statements about things he can’t know for sure. That’s just the state of the science right now. He said that it’s quite obvious by looking at our GI tract that we aren’t herbivores or carnivores specifically, and touched on facts and anecdotes around it all, but that’s all anyone can really do right now. Give it a few years and I’m sure it’ll be a very different understanding. The title definitely made the direction of the conversation seem like it would be more exclusively about that topic though.

Its easy to criticise his vagueness but let me tell you there is absolutely NO complete science on nutrition and health or lifespan only pseudoscience. Mtor....NO science only supposition : Intermittent fasting; TMAO, cholesterol you name it. It is disappointing but this guy is right. The type of studies we would want to do are unethical and well probably never be done. We can only rely on mechanistic data because most of the studies are epidemiological and we still don't know the complete role of genetics. For example people have hypertrophy v. hyperplasia of the fat cells at much differing body weights causing dysfunction and thus disease. The interplay of nutrition, genetics, lifestyle is still playing out.....and he is absolutely right not just play along with the 'narrative' and not true science. The 'Zoe' studies which are not published completely yet may be interesting as they are done on a healthy cohort....so far the studies are showing that there is a hugely different response to the same foods in both glycaemic control and the microbiome. Peter Attia too has alluded to the pseudoscience of nutrition.

The best we can do right now is understand what to avoid eating. Any food item with a dozen "manufactured" ingredients is obviously something you should avoid.... even if it fits into whatever diet you are following including the KETO diet. There are tons of KETO foods out there low on carbs but have a bunch of ingredients I rather not ingest. My general rule of thumb is the simpler the ingredients the better the food is for me. Of course there are certain foods I can't tolerate very well even if they are natural. I noticed a few vegetables like spinach and kale I can only eat in very small amounts or I get digestive distress (I'll spare you the details). I also noticed the high fat diet I eat is easier to digest for me and makes my stool long and smooth. Foods such as eggs, fish (tuna, tilapia, mackerel), pecans, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, breadless 100% beeef burgers, olive oil, etc.... As for the vegetables and fruit? I mostly eat tomatoes, sour pickles, peppers (not spicy), lemons, radishes, and a small amount of kale. And if I go to a fast food place, I normally order a plain hambuger with a tomato on it. I throw out the bun. If I tell them not to give me a bun, the burger always comes out wrong, so I just throw it out.

As a type 1 diabetic, I noticed an area on a toe that looked suspicious. It was a Friday and I already had an appointment to see the podiatrist on Monday, I cleaned the area and applied some topical antibiotics. The following day (Saturday), I checked the area to repeat the same thing, but I happened to take a scent and it was highly infected. I went straight to the ER and the first person that saw me was a vascular surgeon. Having had a history of blood clots, I assumed that was the reason, however, he asked me why I was there and I told him it was because of my infected toe, and he yelled at me “Is this why you are here,” and quite honestly, I yelled back, “yes, that's why I am here, I need IV antibiotics. He manually checked the pulse in my foot and told me that I have enough pulse and he could not do anything else. I was in the hospital for over two weeks and went home with six weeks of IV treatment and thank God, it saved not just that toe but the one next to it... The lesson here, know your body and be proactive... I learned from an experienced where within a few days I became septic, 6 weeks in the hospital, early part in the ICU, almost had a below-the-knee amputation, but lost half of my foot, but thank God with an in-shoe prosthetic I am able to drive and do daily activities

Conversely, there is a plethora of former long-term vegans and vegetarians who have testified to their former diets wrecking their health which, unsurprisingly, was restored by a carnivore diet. Yes, you'll perform better (more energy) in the short term, but your rack your engine (cells) MUCH faster. Plant protein does not activate mTor, because it's covered by a tough membrane that takes time to get through. Sort of like the difference between complex carbs (oats) and simple carbs (table sugar). If you care at all about your health and want to be as informed by both sides of the argument, read: How Not To Die by Dr. Michael Greger. I think people started eating meat out of starvation and we were never intended to. Why don't we have sharp teeth like other meat eaters, and why do we have to cook it? The meat industry is powerful enough to influence our media to get us eating meat, though. And people simply don't want to give up meat so naturally they listen to the "experts" telling them it's good to eat meat. How long were you on keto? It's possible the inflammation was caused by things other than the vegetables. I've been vegetarian for the past year and a half, and it's improved my health so much, so I'm biased. I've also done keto before to lose weight. While vegetarian, you have to watch your ratio of Omega 3 fatty acids versus Omega 6 fatty acids to help reduce inflammation. For example, using too many salad dressings with soybean oil can cause inflammation, versus not using a much healthier flaxseed oil. It's possible the switch to vegetarianism was a good step for your body long-term, but in the short-term your body began burning toxins accumulated over many years by eating meat.

Also, give me an example of _one_ mammal that _doesn't_ eat a mainly mono-diet, limited perhaps to a small selection of specific food sources within a type. The idea that humans grew up "eating the rainbow" with a "required" endless variety of plant species for optimal health seems dubious at best. Also, the fact that we can nail down the specific, very limited diets of pretty much every animal species but our own tells me that cultural biases, egocentric opinions & idealistic thinking cloud our understanding. I eat about 5 New York striploin grass-fed steaks a week, with other things on other days. I never tire of them. I go "yum!" as I approach the table. They are 380g each, and I eat as much as I want, with butter. I put the rest away if I feel full after half of it, or 3/4, or whatever. A tip on what instinct can be based on is the research of Rupert Shaldrake from Cambridge UK on what he calls Morphogenic Fields. Something that allows animal species to store information for the species outside the individual brain capacity (sort of 'cloud'). Animals act instinctively without 'learning' because their brain accesses the morphogenic energy field where the species stores info and acts according with instructions kept there. Very interesting and support by tons of empirical data statistically processed.

770+ lbs and I've lost 500 lbs and counting all by following a carnivore lifestyle. I failed many diets AND lapband surgey. Moderation/balance, what is that? When you are broken like I was, it's impossible to do! Carnivore diet has fixed all that and I look and feel better at 52 years old than did in my 20's. The doctor has given me a clean bill of health and I have her blessings. She is still flawed at my results. So why does the carnivore diet work? It's given me the "off switch I never had. I eat my meal, then my brain switches off and I no longer think about food for hours. No cravings, no longer wondering when or where my next meal is coming from. This is food freedom! And for those that feel just eating meat is restrictive. Try being 770+ lbs. Try living with debilitating depression and anxiety forcing you to lock yourself in your home and hide from the world. I am free again, experiencing life. I am living again. The carnivore diet has been transforming for me in so many ways. Vegetables/fruits. Not saying they are bad. But for me, they do trigger cravings. I know and understand that now. I will eat a few in social settings, but I am straight back on the carnivore wagon for the next meal. This I guess is moderation - which I COULD NOT do before. I know those who struggle with this don't understand. If you have not had to fight this battle then congratulations! You are obviously one of the lucky ones!

Olive oil is highly processed, & most are cut with other oils, or oxidized & rancid after being shipped overseas... Even if you're getting it fresh, your best options are going to be; Suet, beef tallow, Ghee, grass-fed butter, and other ruminant animal fats, as well as some fatty fish such as sardines & salmon that has EPA & DHA omega-3 fatty acids & what I recommend as a nutritionist studying in this field daily for 15 years. It's good to include some fish to balance omega-3 and omega-6 ratios, preventing inflammation & small scaled fish with fins provide iodine as well, which is depleted in most soils. Almost everyone is deficient in iodine which blocks the absorption of toxic chemicals such as fluoride and bromide in toothpaste, cleaning products, soda, our water supply, & everything contaminated municipal water touches. These chemicals cause a lot of problems for us. Dr Brownstein said, "I don't think there's enough iodine in the microgram dose in the world to detox from fluoride and bromide."

There is far more nuance to the growth pathways, mTOR, eating meat/protein, and longevity than most RU-vid personalities understand. mTOR, IGF-1, and HGH are beneficial and not something to be feared. Everything deserves context. If you’re eating within a time window, exercising, not eating carbs/sugar or seed oils, and sleeping well, these growth pathways will be balanced and allow for you to live longer and with more lean muscle. Pottenger’s Human on RU-vid has an excellent break down of these nuances. Also, the conversation between David Sinclair and Paul Saladino sheds much light on this murky subject.

More deep dives have to happen on the gun microbiome. We are the bacteria in us. It is also our 2nd brain. Completely connected. People living in different regions have different gut microbe balances because they are fused with their environment and the bacteria in that environment, their food that determines the balance of the bacteria. So there is no one way to eat for everyone. There is a base of nutrients we need, but nutrition is directed by the gut microbiome. It also depends on where you live. Nutrition from food feeds the bacteria and determines the balance of it which determines your health like immune system health. An example is sugar. Too much sugar and you will be feeding and giving a rise to destructive bacteria in your gut which will signal to your brain to give it more sugar. You register it as a craving, meanwhile it's the gut bacteria controlling what your cravings are. You can get a test done to see what is the type of bacteria you have and the balance/dominance of what strand is in your gut. We most certainly are what we eat.

Everything about human biology proves that we are carnivores and natural hunters. Humans have many small fat cells like all carnivores. When you compare the structure of fat cells in various types of animals, carnivores are found to have a higher number of smaller fat cells and omnivores a smaller number of larger fat cells. Humans were found to be at the top of the carnivorous pattern. This shows that the energy metabolism of humans is adapted to a diet in which lipids and proteins rather than carbohydrates, make a major contribution to the energy supply. Humans have the stomach acidity of a unique carnivore. Humans had a high level of acidity of 1.5 that lies between that of obligate and facultative scavengers. Producing acidity, and retaining the stomach walls to contain that acidity, is energetically expensive, so would presumably only evolve if the level of pathogens in the human diet was high. Note that herbivoros primates have a stomach pH varying from around 4 to 6. Most omnivores are between 2 and 4. As previously noted, humans have a reduced energy extraction capacity from plants. Our large intestine, where fiber is processed to energy, is 77% smaller by volume than that of a chimpanzee our size. The size and our small intestine, where macronutrients are absorbed is 62% larger than that of a chimpanzee our size. The gut morphology adaptations both improved animal food exploitation and at the same time hindered the full exploitation of fibrous plant foods Humans substituted primate climbing capabilities for an adaptation to throwing, which shows that the structure of our shoulder represents an adaptation to carnivory. Our shoulder is perfectly adapted to throwing, which is useful mainly in hunting and protection from predators. The chimpanzee’s shoulder is adapted to climbing trees. Humans have much higher fat reserves than chimps, our closest relatives. Carrying a high amount of fat costs energy and reduces the speed of chasing or fleeting, but gives us the ability to go periods without food while we hunt and scavenge. Apes are constantly eating and surrounded by plants, and don’t need this function. If we were constantly eating plants, we wouldn’t have adapted this way. Human jaws and teeth shrank, forfeiting chewing capabilities. We know early humans crafted tools to help process meat, even before fire. It takes 39% to 46% less force to chew and swallow processed meat than processed root foods. Evolution chose to forgo the ability to properly chew certain plant-based foods to allow for more room in the skull. The ability to use tools also explains why we don’t have carnivorous fangs - we didn’t have to tear raw flesh from a carcass with our bare teeth.

Super simple, Genesis is the owner's manual for the human body. It states fruits, nuts, grains and greens. The longest living strongest and smartest creatures including humans live on this diet. I grew up hunting and fishing (still love to) but switched to full plant based diet in the Marines and never felt, performed or healed/recovered better. There are 3 points by which I rate a diet..... 1. Longevity 2. Performative 3. Curative Plant based diet tops out in all 3 categories

Super simple in your mind (opinion). Not everyone ascribes to the Genesis theory. Some believe god gave us reason not religion. Some do not believe in god at all. The last sentence is subjective. Again, opinion. Cannot be substantiated. Good for you that you never felt better. For everyone who attributes feeling good to their plant based diet choice, there is one who feels just as good on strict carnivore.

@@yakncast7530 and as far as it being factually substantiated there is a myriad of empirical data to substantiate the benefits of a plant based diet. Again I dont care what you do for a diet and I wish you the best, truly. But facts dont care about our feelings or habits. Take a look at the diets of the longest living demographics- NATGEO did one on the "blue zones" a while back. Also the "China Study" which is about the biggest dietary study conducted.

@@JamesDecker7 Abel was a keeper of sheep and Cain a tiller of the ground, but it never mentioned their diets. The dietary change that started to incorporate meat came after the flood, at which point is recorded the biggest reduction in human lifespan, which I believe is a good point to ponder.

I find the term "vegan" is not appropriate for this type of comparison, but rather "plant based", since the former indicates more what those folks _do not_ eat rather than what they _do_ eat.
@snivvelslurderagementai2560
vegan is more on the ethical side. I'm a vegan now after going plant-based. as a vegan I can still consume bivalves like mussels which can be considered a form of meat. so vegan is strongly associated with plant-based, but there are more ethical considerations.
@jangyman
@jangyman Год назад
Precisely ...vegan is more geared towards minimizing impact on sentient beings (and the planet) ...but this discussion is is based on benefits to self ...no surprise. So again ...vegan's the wrong choice of term for this video ...plus there are a lot of technically "vegan" foods that are terrible for our health, and that no-one concerned about longevity should be eating ...and naturally worsens the case for the cause, as avid meat-eaters will focus on them in their arguments.
@snivvelslurderagementai2560
@@jangyman most people just don't know so I forgive them. but the plant-based discussion is an indirect win in my books. better than sending an animal that has more in common with humans and our pets to the slaughter.
@jangyman
@jangyman Год назад
Yes, I do appreciate that sentiment ...though it saddens me that most discourse I hear on this topic is set up to misrepresent the vegans/plant-basers ....the more I listen to this video the more I hear it's not an un-biased discussion. Lots of time spent on the circle-of-life/kill-because-it's-natural sentiments, and less on the minimize-our-impact/don't-kill-what-you-don't-need-to messages. I also found the swift agreement of nutritional deficiencies of plant foods to be somewhat irritating ...for instance the quick assertion that there is a lack of complete amino acids in plant foods ...where it is very demonstrable that combinations of these foods (eg. beans+rice) provide full of essential amino acids, and that plant-based eaters are rarely deficient on "protein" (also a term I find to be insufficient and lazily applied in intellectual discourse ...much like "carbs"). I really want to believe that we are surrounded by open minds when I watch these videos ...it would be easier to listen to people talk on this subject who understand the multitude of reasons for the decision ...and would respect more that they sincerely tried and failed rather than didn't try and are now telling us about the deficiencies.
@snivvelslurderagementai2560
@@jangyman yeah and all that is a problem. we have a population, including doctors that just don't know anything about nutrition. the carnivore / keto fad doesn't help either. it just distorts everything even more. there are millions of people now including doctors that think high carbs are fundamentally bad even though nobody in recorded history has ever developed diabetes or obesity by eating tons of fruits which are high in carbs. in fact the opposite is the result; health benefits. the carnivore diet fad has created this illusion that people who eat meat are on a "natural" and "healthy" diet and everyone else isn't. it's mass brainwashing but all will be exposed in time.

Veganism is generally defined as living in a way that avoids consuming, using, or exploiting animals as much as realistically possible. While this leaves room for individual preferences & barriers, the overall intent is that minimal harm is done to animals through life choices. My friends don’t care what they eat as long as there’s no animals involved. Oreos & margaritas are vegan! 😂

There were not refrigerators or freezers back then. Obviously. Fresh plants and dehydrated plants were the main sources. Look at the spice( dehydrated fruits and veggies) trade for example.

I respond a bit too well to taking creatine, where my body needs a lot of water to be able stay hydrated. After I starting taking it one time, a week later I had really bad cramping in my bowels so bad I went to the ER. Ultrasound showed a large amount of poop in basically my entire colon. Took some miralax, stopped my creatine, and was fine days later. If you were to tell me I was. That constipation felt like a knife getting stabbed multiple times into my stomach.
