Las Vegas continues to seemingly violate FAA rules by charging unreasonable landing fees and discriminating against non-commercial general aviation. In this video, we look at the Superbowl special event fees, analyze the numbers and expenses of the Formula One landing fees, and learn what we can all do to stop our public airports from these privatization practices.
I've done by best to gather the most recent and accurate information. The Clark County Department of Aviation did not respond to multiple requests for information and comment.
Portions of ATC communication and the flight have been edited. This video is not instructional in any way. I am not a CFI. I am sharing my experience and thoughts about this flight and this should be taken as entertainment only. By sharing mistakes and accomplishments alike, hopefully the aviation community will benefit.
Special thanks to those who contributed footage, including Chad Overton.

I’m trying to be shocked. After nearly 20 years in Vegas, I learned that the people there mostly only care about themselves. I’m surprised there’s not a concept that you only pay for what you need. Larger jets should be paying for the coolers and such that the caterers use, not GA pilots, if they can afford that gulfstream, they can afford the bill from the airport for services rendered 💁🏻‍♂️

Excellent video with the exception of your statement about AOPA. Like most things they do it’s a half-assed attempt; previously they focused on three airports throughout their campaign: Hilton head, Asheville, and Key West. There were some concessions and agreements to publicize costs by SIGNATURE, but after that, the campaign went flat. Next up was the whole VECTOR system for computers capturing ADS - B data and generating landing fees at airports who saw this as a “new source” of revenue. Many pilots reported this to AOPA, there was a little to no action. Sorry cannot endorse this organization whatsoever, would prefer these messages through RU-vid on channels like this, obviously this channel gets the attention of both the FAA and members of Congress.

I got my PPL through CFII in the Vegas area (VGT/HND) and for years there are stupid things, rules, lack of interest and dilapidating conditions that Clark County will fix immediately if it involves jets. Great work bringing attention to this! It looks like most of those additional services (equipment) would not have provided any benefit to GA aircraft. Do you have catering staff on your plane? So what are GA aircraft getting for the extra cost? Any of the standard services (like parking assistance, shuttle service, fuel etc) would already be covered by the standard fees they charge and are easily scalable. Expecting double the traffic? Put on double the staff at double the cost, sure, but you'll be getting double the fees that would normally cover half of the staff. Its a simplistic way to look at it, but the way they are trying to justify it is unrealistic.

For the Formula One event, the 800 pound gorilla in the room of private jet operators brought in our own fuel truck had dedicated personnel ramp and inside to deal with our passengers, and rented a large chunk of the ramp for our aircraft. This was all done because the airport authority said we were monopolizing airport services. We did this to minimize our impact on the FBO. That’s not to say the FBO did not park our aircraft in and not honor the contract. A large number of the jet operations that you cited had their own company provided ground support all the way from lav to fuel and we tankered through. The only county service we used was real estate.

Something I don't think is being considered here, is how higher prices serve to curb demand in situations where supply is fixed or limited. I don't know (yet) enough about airport operations to say for sure, but I would assume each airport has a limit to the number of aircraft it can handle over a specified period of time. If that is the case, then the number of aircraft allowed to fly in/out of an airport within a period of high demand must be limited by some means. That is effectively what occurred during the Formula 1 event due to the higher landing fees. If the airport cannot charge a higher fee, then they will need to limit traffic some other way, such as a first-come-first-served-, or lottery-based reservation system. Both of those could also allow for quotas of specific aircraft types and sizes, to leave it open to more small aircraft. Without some mechanism in place to limit traffic the airport could easily become overwhelmed and dangerous. I think it's a mistake to view the higher fees as merely a windfall for the airports, as doing so leaves out an important component of the function of prices in the market.
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey 3 месяца назад
A PPR and slot/reservation system can limit volume to airport capacity. Outrageous fees aren’t necessary to do so and are the way a for-profit private company would try to limit demand. But that’s not how a public utility should work or how these airports have agreed to operate.

Thank you for your efforts. In this case since private businesses are partially involved this publicity may help. Is the airport funded by the government or the private business (ie Signature) that runs the FBO? It sounds as if Eric is saying that the FBO is the one being funded by the government and not the actual airport (if I’m wrong please correct the misunderstanding). I agree that the prices are wild but I don’t think that a price ceiling on a private business is the best idea. Until the government wants to directly run airports (which could make the problem worse) pilots just need to regulate the business with their dollars. For now let’s start with the simple solution to this complicated problem.
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey 4 месяца назад
The FBO in this case is owned by the county. The county accepts federal grant money for the airport ($31M for VGT alone since 2002). These funds are for improvements. The operations of the airport are self sustaining from revenue like land leases, hangar rents, fuel sales etc. the federal dollars come from user fees on air travel and related taxes. The CCdOA runs a surplus every year before charging these very large landing fees. At KLAS general aviation ramp space is exclusively controlled by private FBOs like Atlantic and signature which obviously make profit. At many airports the trend has become that there is no public GA parking and any ramp space or parking is controlled by a private for profit FBO. Yet the airports accept federal grant money but allow the private FBOs to monopolize the airport access.
@guigriffith6080
@guigriffith6080 4 месяца назад
@@SoCalFlyingMonkeyIf you could give the exact regulation that would be helpful, because I read through 47107 and it seems that it is talking about airports and FBOs that are applying for grants. Again I agree that ramp fees should be reasonable but the part that I disagree with is using the government to fix problems that pilots can have a quicker hand in solving. Do people really need to fly to the event? Do people really need to land at VGT, LAS, or HND? Could people just drive or fly commercial? My concern is the moment that our government starts to control aviation more than it is, our flying privileges will be increasingly more limited.

HND has been garbage for GA since the Raiders built their facility across the street. HND built new T-hangars a couple years ago... T-hangers mind you... and they start at $1200 / per month to rent. I kept a Mooney at HND for a few months in the tie downs, and just for access to drive to the tie downs Clark County made me up my auto insurance to $500k CSL. I actually had to change insurance providers to obtain that much. They also require $1M minimum in Aircraft Liability Insurance. I moved out to Boulder City Airport, and while they are not without their challenges, BVU is much more GA friendly. It's also the only airport in the Vegas airport where you can conduct Phase 1 testing from... Clark County has banned Phase 1 at all of their airports.

I don’t think they should be able to charge a landing feet anyone for a public utility . If their cost go up during special events, the government should subsidize them It’s up to the government to make sure public utilities remain functionable. It was a promise they made. But we have elected officials the bow down to the special interest . Unless we get a GA friendly department in the FAA made up of pilots and aircraft owners, GA is on its way to extinction, and the current powers to be are fine with that. Financial discrimination and segregation are the tools the corporate powers use to crush the unwanted. Good luck with your quest. Thanks for your hard work. Long live general aviation & the public utilities, it built . P S. Landing fees are unsafe. If a pilot arrives in Nevada with 30 minutes of fuel and all of the airports have a $3000 landing fee he’s going to try to stretch his legs that could be disastrous.

Couldn't they still justify it by predictable traffic, i.e. they don't know when busy random times appear, but they sure know when Superbowl is. That then there was little traffic is the intended result of the high prices - with much more traffic had they not charged so much. I totally think that therefore they should be specifically mandated to abide by the fairness standards!

Sarasota Bradenton international also won't sell federal funded AV gas to general aviation pilots unless aircraft is fueled onsite. I fly paragliders.

Where’s the FAA? Busy violating the pilots bill-of-rights and prosecuting them for being prudent.

Wouldn’t it be the FBOs not the airport assessing these fees? Also the landing fee is the cheapest of the fees l. Parking, ramp, security,breathing fees are what adds up
@SoCalFlyingMonkey

In the case of Vegas, the county owns the FBOs and determines the special event fees, at least at VGT and HND. At LAS, the two FBOs are privately owned and run.

Good point, but also it's Super Bowl weekend. Of course those prices have to be that high for any business to make money.

Great video, but big business, big money, and big Jets will win. I own a Lancair ES and unfortunately, big money will win Always has, and always will. Sad yes, but thank you very much for doing what you’re doing. Every small business in America is being purchased by bigger companies and becoming conglomerates. Mom and pops continually go away. The big money will always squash the little guy.

I understand why you think this. And most of the time I don’t disagree it’s true. But I’ve been involved in local advocacy in my own neighborhood (non aviation) and we beat a large chain restaurant when every single person said don’t even bother trying. We have to at least try…better than giving in…

😂 there’s so many millionaires/billionaires flying in today they don’t care about the rules. If I was in office I would turn the other cheek knowing that the Super Bowl was in my city. Vegas has proven throughout the years to be different in many ways from the other cities in the US js

Boycott the airports and GA strips that are doing it.. they’ll soon realise when they are no aircraft using the services after the Super Bowl

why would it make any difference if they are publicly funded regardless of movements?

@@swiftadventurer because they aren’t getting landing fees from Aircraft not landing there and using the services. And that’s what the cost increase is from.

I’m sorry you are disappointed. I offer up all my videos ad free, for free on my Patreon. Patreon.com/socalflyingmonkey. It’s the same content without the ads or sponsor integrations. Of course the hope is that viewers will check out the other offerings there and choose to support the channel, but I do post all same videos as on RU-vid just without any ads. Ideally we would have enough supporting members that I would never have to post on RU-vid at all. But at the moment the economics of it don’t allow for that.

Sadly, public airports really don’t exist for the public anymore. I used to own my own hanger at Thermal. Numerous owners of hangers were told we had to get rid of our hangers. I asked if I could move my hanger to L77 which has absolutely nothing on it. I was told no. The land that was cleared almost 20 years ago at TRM remains vacant. They were collecting rent on it before and aren’t now. The county just didn’t want to be bothered: lazy government workers. At least boat owners can anchor somewhere if there is a shortage of docks. For the miles traveled, I think it has to be cheaper to provide infrastructure for airplanes than it is for cars. Particularly now. I used to use flight following everywhere, but now it just seems better to keep your eyes out the windows and use ADS-B data. I love flying, but this is sure the sore spot. Oh I despise government who only pretend to work for the public.
