Most gun people will advocate the need to keep a truck gun. We agree. But what do you carry in your vehicle? Why choose one gun over another? We hope to provide some food for thought on that subject. Every situation and person is different. It's worth making the best decision you can when it comes to a defensive firearm.
I am by no means someone you should listen to for personal defense info. I am just some guy that likes to think about gun stuff and how it applies to different situations. Don't take my word for it. Ask a professional.

Why are you messing with turning the dots on? Get one with 50k+ hour runtime & shake awake and leave it on.

I won't even look at a dot anymore unless it automatically turns on when moved. I made that mistake once and it lives on my target .22 now, a totally non-critical application

Truck gun debates can go so many different ways when you think about location, price of firearm and if it is worth leaving in your vehicle as well as if you have a family with you. Nice video.

350L. High capacity. High performance. Low recoil. Can be ran super hot with 65gr lehigh or subsonic 280gr makers. Can be ran in barrels as short as 6" and does so better than 300blk. You can get it in packages as short as rattlers and you have the benefit of all the 9mm subgun cans.

Some excellent observations. Every weapon has its trade offs. Different weapons for different purposes. PDWs are my preferred item cause they can go more places, but a basic fighting rifle is always handy as a truck gun.

Much appreciated. I agree that the pdw is the most versatile for a range of environments. One point I didn't bring up was vehicular carry with 2 small children. They're out of the pumpkin seats, but I'm not sure I'd want to try to wrangle a long rifle with 2 kids under 5. Having a pdw in a backpack would be waaay more feasible

Best discussion so far. I agree with everything you said, except smallest permissible pistol is a 45 in semi auto or 357 in revolver. I may consider a 10mm, but I keep purchasing 45 auto. My rational on this is 17 rounds of 9mm +p hollow point into the shoulder of a 8 point buck at 7 yards and it just stood there. One round of 45auto at 30 yards and down. From a rural perspective. Carry for attacking critters. Most I have run into were 8 dogs in a pack. Truck Gun. In high school, back rack of truck in the parking lot; Lever action 30-30 and lever action 22, both with gold triggers, Marlin. Until 10 years ago, various brands of 30-30 lever on my tractors and ORV (off-road vehicle). Marlin, Winchester, Sears and Robuck, Western Auto, and Savage (actual this is a 300 Savage, and it was too expensive to carry). Key to a Ranch gun is put it on the vehicle and foget it. Clean twice per year. It must withstand rain, mud and snow with no care. Then the AR15 came out. Perfect vehicle gun. Good for 100 meter, same as 30-30. About the same weight, but a functional semi-auto. Don't even need a gun rack, just throw it in the bed (chambered, on safe). I have proven one shot to kill deer. Perfect youth gun also. But, my hunting gun was always either 30-30 for walking or BAR 30-06 for stand. Must have a 300-500 meter gun for coyotes so the 30-30 is out as is the 556. New preference is the small frame 308s in the AR platform. Run over it or drop a tree on it. It is good to shoot out to over 300 meters. My one point of contention. If an optic requires a battery, it is useless. I have a holographic on my 556 and every time I shoulder it the battery is dead. A good 1-4 or 3-12 scope is the cats meow. Wish I could still use iron sights, but age kills eyes. Follow the age old stratagem that the optic must cost at least twice what the gun cost and it will never be off due to impacts. Granted my SFAR only has a Nikon Monarch on it at half the cost of the rifle, but is an old tried and true optic having lived on many rifles and thrown in the bed of vehicles. Always have a 45 or similar pistol for backup. Open carry. My current open carry is a 5.7x28. Similar knock down but good to longer distance with less recoil.
@triplefshooting
@triplefshooting 5 месяцев назад
I agree on the battery for the optic not being ideal. A lot of the newer 1-4 or 1-6 options are interesting. The trijicon relies on fiber optics and tritium so you always have a strong dot but no batteries. I think that or the old school trijicon or meprolight style of dot would be good too. Always on and no batteries is definitely better for a situation where you may not have batteries

Here’s my scenario along with my unqualified opinion and comment - I would love feedback. I envision a scenario in which an EMP goes off in the atmosphere frying all electronics. I am anywhere from 20 to 60 miles from home. I’ve got my 3 day assault pack in the vehicle. Like you mentioned I have my Glock 45 and plenty of ammo/mags reasonably. The two ‘truck guns’ I’m debating between are the Palmetto State Armoy Jakl(5.56.45 and whatever brace you want) and the PSA Krinkov(5.45x39 with brace of your choice) I like these weapons for light weight, conceal-ability/fold-ability’, reliability, and cool factor. I’d also be getting the new Meprolight M22 Reddit sight since all electronics are going to be fried it will still function.
@triplefshooting
@triplefshooting 5 месяцев назад
I'm fairly boring, so I'd stick with the 556 just to maintain a consistent and more reliable ammo supply. I love aks but they take a back seat for that reason. I really like the idea of the fiber dot. Having crapped out electronics is a bad day

Good thoughts, now take it a few steps further with each firearm. How fast can you get out of the vehicle get behind cover and engage the target with 3 kill shots? Next if your vehicle is blocked front and rear and someone firing, with each firearm how fast can you engage the target with 3 kill shots while in the driver seat?
@triplefshooting
@triplefshooting 5 месяцев назад
All good points. The rifle and shotgun are definitely more of a challenge to use from the driver's seat. As far as deploying from wherever one chooses to stow them in the vehicle, I feel it would come down to how you stow each one. If the firearms are stowed unloaded, the loading process could vary wildly. Hopefully each person who chooses to carry in the vehicle thinks through these things and practices their process as often as they can. Thanks for the meaningful discussion 🙏

I kept it simple, a Colt 6520...traded a Sig Mk25 for it.
@triplefshooting

I almost went strictly iron sights. I'm just faster with a dot. That and the MRO has enough battery life to justify the idea. By that thought, quite a few rifle dots have that going for them now

I'm not against any of the choices you showed, but I think many people are 9mm myopic. A G40 with hard cast can give you 700 ft/lbs of energy, which is far better than the 9mm samples you showed. Plus, it is easier to hide, easier to stow in an inconspicuous place in your vehicle, and does not require stopping and walking to your trunk to employ. This is more geared for the stumbling into an urban riot sort of scenario, where a quick response and get away is what the situation calls for. I hope none of us have to find out if our preperations are good enough. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
@triplefshooting
@triplefshooting 5 месяцев назад
That's a great point. I really could've done a vehicular carry rural vs urban to do the video correctly. I still hold to the point that your carry gun (whether that's on your person or easily accessible from the driver's seat) is still the most important part of your defensive setup. Thanks for the idea and meaningful input 👍

I’ve debated several times about putting a “truck gun” in my vehicle but keep deciding not to. Where I live it just doesn’t make much sense to risk having it stolen out of my vehicle compared to the odds of me actually needing it over my carry gun. Still like the idea though.

My big issue basically comes down to trying to handle both my kids under 5 and a long gun at the same time. Probably not going to to work. If I'm by myself it's possible. If I have my kids the gun is probably being left in the truck for the time being.
