One of the first classic albums I remember getting into whilst at school. Introduced by The Doors soundtrack and the song Heroin. By chance I picked up my first ever vinyl version of it last week and probably played the album in full for the first time in 10 years or more. Absolutely loved it. I found a UK Polydor mid-price repress from 1983. I'm guessing it was remastered at that time for the new run. Sounds great to me
Great story! I think my entry to VU was via Lou Reeds Transformer. There are prob a lot of reissues that sounds great. Even better than the og. I also have a German 71 press that I am going to sell to get some of the money back 🤣
It's so fun seeing different vintage copies over the years. I obviously know the nicer condition copies are more sought after but I kind of like seeing the worn/damaged copies because it makes them unique and reflects the dirty/artistic music. My copies are vg condition at best and I like how they look. Peeled, half peeled and unpeeled. I have videos posted on my channel if anyone wants to check it out.
I’m with you 100%! I know they are rare in the states too but here in Sweden they are non existent so just seeing one is damn near impossible. But I do think that now when I have a nice copy I would start to buy wors copies just for the gritty honest and true of the record. This is real. Real music. Real art.
1:51 - “you uneducated bastards” lol love it hilarious, also love the Velvets, I only have one album reissue (White light, white heat) everyone needs this in their collection
Nice one Jonas, Obviously one of my favourite records also. I have 9 copies of this record lol - the mono and stereo first UK pressings with the different front cover, 2 x Japanese first issues with the obi and peelable banana on Verve, 2 x different peelable banana later issues, 2 x coloured vinyl issues and a peeled banana copy on MGM. Still looking for an original torso cover but so hard to find one. Cheers, Paul
9 copies!!!! Wow that is so cool! I can imagine this is a record that is easy to get caught in the "collecting swamp". I do have a German 71 press that sounds really good but I think ill sell that to save me some money. Thanx for watching Paul and hope you find that torso soon! =) //J
It was my holy grail too, like obviously so many people 😅 Found a 1968 East Coast pressing with peeled banana for a pretty decent price on eBay. The record plays all through though there are many scuffs. Unfortunately I damaged a bit the label with my Knosti anti-stat, the washing left a round mark… Still i’m very happy to have this one. Actually I own 5 versions of this record, and I believe I could buy some other pressings when I find it 😆 It’s a kind of obsession, but I LOVE this one, and LOVE what Lou Reed did after.
That’s awesome. Yes I can imagine myself collecting more copies. But it took me so long to secure the first so guess It will probably take a wile to get the second one 😀 I started with Lou Reed and Transformer and then when t back in his catalog. That’s how I found them. Love Reeds work too. There are some core albums of his in my collection that will never go.
@@SublimMedia That’s interesting because Transformer is quite different from the first Velvet Underground. Transformer is a lot more reachable with songs not so compromising but with a little sweet taste, you see what I mean ? The most difficult to apprehend must be White Light White Heat.
@@Slopinone I agree. White light is the most avant- hard I think. Yes Transformer is prob more related to Bowie or Iggy than VU but I love following the rabbit hole and see how far it takes me. Have always been that way. 😀
If you dont collect records id sell it. Its a historical piece that many hard core collectors would love to have in the collection. But if you have a bunch of records and a record player I would not sell it. You might regret it and its going to be hard to find another copy. Remember, records is expensive but not that expensive. Its not like a car or a horse =) But you buying it way back and having it for al the years. That is forever. Just my two cents =) If you would sell it, shoot me a email. I would love to have one. info(at)sublimmedia.se //Jonas
there's a 1966 dj promo vinyl I believe. Then the march 1967 release with the Emerson torso 1st edition with the sticker unpeeled - Gatefold V6-5008 Stereo or Mono and East or West Coast@@buckaroo1949
I love the VU and this record, but "one of the best records ever recorded in the history of music" is a tall statement. The early Louis Armstrong albums, Robert Johnson's recordings, the first album by Elvis, Mile Davis's Kind of Blue--there are some giants out there.
Yes that is a good point but I think I still would argue that it is one of the best and just like Johnson and miles, as important for the music development. But man there are so many good records. It’s a bold statement to put that “best” label on anything. 😄
Cool. If I kept the once I have had I would have three also but I just need one 😀 I think most of my viewers have heard about this record enough. In this case the pressing was more interesting imo. 😀
This is an iconic album and to just find a banana unpeeled is quite hard to do so congrats...I wanted to ask you about the Foo Fighters since the drummer passed away a couple of days ago are you going to search out the band's albums? I have one album by the Foo Fighters it's one of the more recently released albums Medicine At Midnight.
Hi. Yes such an iconic record. No I’m not looking for Fighters albums. It’s so sad what happened to Taylor but I collect mainly older music and foo fighters (the little I listen to them now a days) I stream.
What's the difference between the Stereo and Mono of the earlier pressings? Is one worth more? I have found one but someone commented it was Stereo and I should be looking for Mono. I didn't realize this and was wondering if one is considered more rare. Thanks in advance for any info.
That is a good question and unfortunately I don’t have the answer to it. It’s such an early record so a mono in this case is can’t see being much rarer but I don’t know. Interesting!!
I just found a box of records on the side of the road for free and this airbrushed version was in it with the banana unpeeled still in the plastic cover. What’s this worth?
That is one hell of a find. Congratulations. Well it’s hard to say what it’s worth. I guess you are not that into records. If you were, you would know how to find out. The thing with this is that it has been released in so many pressings. The best way to find out witch one is yours is to go to Discogs and type in the name of the record. Then take the time to find your specific press. Then you will know. I’ll tell you this. It’s going to be worth a lot so it’s worth your time.
I hate to be crass, but … how much did it cost you? By dumb luck in 1987 as a teenager I bought a copy, unpeeled, in perfect condition … from the 99¢ bin at 2nd Hand Tunes four blocks from my apartment. I treasured it for years, but one day-after I’d moved out of my mom’s and in with some roommates-my copy of this album vanished, along with that roommate and about 1/4 of my collection. I’ve been meaning to replace it ever since, but I’m afraid of what it’ll cost me.
@@SublimMedia - Thank you, I appreciate the sympathy. Of course my teenage self never realized albums I bought in 1987 priced for $0.99 would, when I became an adult, transform from just being old into being priceless antiques … or that people close to me would decide “Oh, he doesn’t know his l.p. is worth money, but I do, therefore I _deserve_ it more!” and literally steal from me. €100-ish isn’t bad, though. I’d be willing to go as high as $250 for a good copy … but of course, then I wouldn’t have the splendid story of having found it for $0.99 and having held onto it for 35 years. Oh well. Thanks for the info regarding the back cover, too, I’d never known any of that! Your channel is altogether excellent.
