Ven. Fulton Sheen: On the Sin of Divorce and 7 Principles of Christian Order in the Family (1943) 

I am a cradle Catholic who has finally come home to the faith. I was ready to divorce my alcoholic husband of ten years who has never believed or even discussed God. Tomorrow he is attending mass with me after two weeks of no drink. It was all on his own thought. PleaSe pray he finds God and I find forgiveness and if God wills me to stay together with him and somehow find love with him again then move my heart to do his will. Thank you. Amen.

JMJ Spent many hours growing up watch and listening to Venerable Fulton J. Sheen. Any goodness in me is due to his explaining how to live a moral life. We also had weekly discussion in school (Our Lady of LOURDES in Chicago) with all the students and learned how to express our feelings in front of our peers. The Nuns (BVM) Blessed Virgin Mary Order provided the greatest educational experience so that by graduation from 8th grade each student was ready for the world: work, relationships; goals; business; and most importantly to live a life of giving contributing goodness to the community and to always be of service. Now writing to Pope Francis to petition Venerable Sheen to Sainhood. You see WE became homeless and near death and WE prayed to Father Sheen and a miracle happened: we are recovering from the targeted evil devastation and are surviving again. Praying to Father Sheen to keep my sanity and health to keep going and provide for my grandchildren. Yes. We write JMJ on all our school papers and still write JMJ on all my personal communications. Now I need to start writing personal individual letters and stories to all my children, family members and friends to tell them how much I love them, how blessed I was to have them in my life and share so many loving memories. As I am ready to meet my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 75 years is a long time and feel I have worked enough double shifts as a Registered Nurse, provided instruction to over 500 RNs; opened a successful small business in 1994 providing state approved Nurse Assistant, Home Health Aide, Certified Phlebotomy Training and Continuing Education: C & S Health Education Services in Granada Hills, CA. Now my ex-husband of 42 years took control as I had to divorce him for infidelity and gambling away millions of dollars I earned throughout our marriage. Yes, my home of 42 years was foreclosed and lost all from his gambling and financial mismanagement. But that was the way I was raised. Your husband took care of all finances. Gave him every cent I earned. He will meet his Creator one day and will answer to GOD as will we all. Now in another State with 1 of my 5 adult children and my grandson. Will do my best to find an RN position for an employer that will hire me at my age. Or will soon meet my Lord and be relieved from all this homelessness and financial worry because I am so tired. Writing all this down relieves my fears and worry that I have for my children. GOD bless everyone to always be safe, healthy, happy and thriving. Marriages are made in Heaven.They are meant to be sacrificial. A beautiful Sacrament, a gift from God. Children are God's gift to enrich the marriage.

Even my marriage have a lot of sacrifices in the deepest, I still believe love in Jesus's name I pray. He is the greatest blessing and healer under any circumstances in our life. Thank you Bishop Fulton Sheen's inspired teaching.

That's why physical & spiritual Chastity is one of the 3 promises ideal for Priests & Religious consecrated life is rooted only in Christ to live joyfully regardless of carnal challenges of the world. Really you need to listen closely and more than once to this presentation to appreciate the rather prophetic nature of it as well as grasping some understanding of how far things have fallen. Notice how even in 1943 he speaks of economics and cost of children, showing how even then people were rationalizing contraception. A real sociological study on morals then and now considering his talks were widely disseminated and accepted then compared to how the culture might receive them today. He is rather St. Paul-esque and boldly so.

The economic must be expanded to fit the human. Marital happiness is impossible without sacrifice as it wounds the spouse’s selfishness . Pray the rosary every night to keep the family together.

why there are so many marriage annulments done in the church. How many children suffer when they see their parents remarry and start new "Family". There is only One Holy Family and there is only One Family and that is until death.

Haven't even watched this yet. I had a marriage from Hell still do except for it's not as bad as it was. I think it would have been better for my own soul and my children's had I separated from my emotionally verbally abusive spouse long ago. You need to get yourself into heaven and if somebody is an obstacle you need to get away from that obstacle. I'm not talking about remarriage. I'm talking about a legal separation

I didn't realize that the U.S. Supreme Court decided the question of divorce. Bishop Sheen was speaking about this in this video in 1943, but his analysis is correct that a true marriage is based on a "spiritual" bond -- not on sexual excitement, which will cease soon enough. Look at the results today of not understanding that truth: millions of children from unwed unions with no fathers in the picture; billions of taxpayer dollars given out in government programs to assist these irresponsible mothers and fathers and their illegitimate children; domestic violence; the abuse of women; the necessity of women's shelters. That 1943 U.S. Supreme Court Decision must have been based upon the fact that modern men and women didn't understand the truth of the necessity of a "spiritual" bond which was required for their long-term happiness. I would say it is easier for a person to have that "spiritual" bond with their pet dog or cat than with another person. If, as Bishop Sheen says, that divorce is wrong because "Almighty God says it is wrong," then why did Moses teach that a man could get married multiple times? Moses taught that it was o.k. for a man to be married up to "three" times, and I believe it was that the poor woman could only get out of the marriage if her husband divorced her.

Why hasn't Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen been made a saint yet? Also, it looks like the picture above was cut and pasted by some hypocritical egg-oistical(as Archbishop Sheen pronounces it) person to cause confusion. The lady in the wedding dress was definitively pasted in there.

there have been many popes and clergy that have done horrible things.. worse than what you have mentioned. That doesn’t mean that what they have done is condoned by the church. Church teachings are very clear regarding the sinfulness of the abuses committed by those charged with administering and leading the church. The church does not equal the pope and/ or others. It’s not the pope’s church. If you want to understand what the church teaches, read the catechism of the Catholic Church. You can’t kill the message because its messengers are sinful. I used to equate the two as one and the same as you are doing now. You live and learn….

I love listening to Fulton Sheen, but on the subject of divorce I know the church is against it, and I know the bible says that if you divorce your wife or husband and you bed another you make that person an adulterer along with yourself. But my question to Bishop Sheen would have been '' If your husband or wife is beating you up or maybe physically or sexually abusing your children, is it right to stay with that person? or do you stay loyal because of your faith ? and who is responsible if your children continued to be abused and maybe get killed because of the continued abuse inflicted upon them.? Well I would love one of my Catholic priests maybe explain that to me if they get to read this.

Hello, That's right, love should be a mutual elevation to the lord, for the glory of the almighty and directed toward family or should not be it is disastrous for souls, anyway the only person to love in this life is god himself and if he decides to give you a wife you have to love her too in the name of the love of god. Catholic church should *also oppose anti-social behaviors that provoke divorces,* such as drunkenness, drug abuse, domestic abuse, neglect, gambling, pornography, adultery and criminality.

1. Church and the inner famioy circle fail MISERABLY in preparing their children for marriage. 2. God's plan is unmistakable: God wants one marriage. 3. But...what happen if the people you put on earth to show you all this wonders fail MISERABLY? The respond of many is: NO EUCHARIST EVER. STRAIGHT TO PURGATORY. The respond should be: Let God be the judge and let the church make a road to repair your sins and serve God in the way he will show you. That road must be open with deligence and love, tenderness and mercy showing everyone the right path, the right way. Sacraments DO NOT SAVE if are based on external elements. They save only when use the right way for the right reasons.

Great wisdom...but very poor listeners and commentators here. This was 1943 and by this speech it became even clearer to me (I already was clear to me) that the decadence that Catholic education had in america in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s as well as the inability to adapt to modern communication concepts ARE THE MAJOR cause of today’s crisis of CATHOLIC FAMILY VALUES. Rampant divorce in todays society is the direct cause of lack of TRUE EDUCATORS that could have influent the minds of the past 3 generations. Now we have to deal with it. The Philippines is the only country where divorce is illegal. Are all Filipinos happily married? Absolutely not, I would say by the age 45 half of all couples are split up and live in "sin" with a new partner. So what is the church's answer in the Philippines? " "annulment". Which means they pretend that the marriage was never valid in the first place. The elites in the Philippines use this process all the time to get out of marriage, the poor people can't do it because it cost a years salary of a middle income family. Divorces are not a good thing, but when your partner cheats on you, physically and mentally abuses you, it would be stupid to stay in a relationship. At least with divorce there is a clean break in the legal system, and people can go on with their lives. I know lots of divorced people who got remarried and have a happy life. Now Fulton Sheen lived in a time, where lots of women were beaten by their husbands, and the priests told them just to put up with it.

Moses, the Apostle Paul, or any of the disciples for example, would not for one nanosecond, tolerate a single Levite priest/disciple that sexually abused children and/or indulged in sexual immorality. They weren't "transferred" to another place!!! The pope as Holy Father; are you serious??? Only GOD is the Holy Father!!! Only GOD is Holy!!! Are you kidding; "Holy Father"? The "pope" is merely a man that is mortal; most previous "popes" are now dead and rotting in a tomb in Rome, Italy!!! (In fact if you check out the Bible, it clearly states that no one [other than your own father; emphasis is mine] should be addressed as "father"; see Matthew 23:9). The Bible clearly states that no one is righteous. Please read the Bible! Read Exodus and Leviticus. in the Hebrew Scriptures, GOD established only ONE priesthood; to qualify for the priesthood, men had to be Jews of the Tribe of Levi!!!. With the exception of the "Royal Priesthood" mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible, GOD had not changed the Levitical system (After the LORD died on the cross for our sins and resurrected, there is no longer a need for the Levitical system, because Jesus became the New Testament, High Priest, veil, the ultimate sacrifice, etc . Roman Catholics, please read the Bible and check it out for yourselves. The only source of Truth we sinners have, is the Word of GOD; not the traditions of men and all the stuff the Roman Catholic "church" invented. The Roman Catholic "priesthood is the invention of men. According to GOD's mandate given through Moses in the Hebrew scriptures, a man could NOT be Italian, German, Polish, or Argentinian to be a priest of GOD!!!
