Ok true story....High school 1987 the student that got the highest grades each month in our home class would bring in a video and show it in class. Most brought their favorite movies...I.....brought this. This is the Hammersmith show 1984. I still have it on VHS. yes, I showed this entire video before my home class... lol.
JustAMetalHead My mum is cool with me liking metal. My dad doesn't mind but his side of the family are christian they don't really know that I like metal. I can't wait to go to my grandmothers rocking my ST shirt with a pentagram and goat horns which says possessed underneath.
My first Black Metal LP. I still remember hiding it, because I was afraid of my parents reaction if they ever they saw the cover art !! They would probably bring the local priest for a friendly exorcism...
Jakob Wilder Yes, definitely Mercyful Fate. I'd even say Hellhammer. These 5 bands, I believe, maybe not shaped, but influenced the thought and direction that Norwegian Black Metal would take.
You guys forgot SODOM, they even call themselves black metal in their EP's lyrics.... Sodom were around before metallica and slayer... FACT... SODOM influenced speed, thrash, black , and death metal....
Kadesh Le Morte Yes, most definitely Sodom. Metallica didn't really influence Black Metal the way Slayer and Venom did, though. Sodom most definitely influenced the Black Metal scene. Although, the first real Black Metal, that we would recognize as Black Metal, was Bathory's 'Under the Sign of the Black Mark', particularly the song 'Equimanthorn'. Black Metal in the 1980's was far more closer to Slayer...a form of Thrash, then what it would become when bands like Mayhem and Darkthrone came around.
Who's saying metallica? according to Venom metallica were a bunch of spoiled rich kids that did nothing but bitch moan and complain on their first tour together, venom made mad fun of those guys..,. Fuck metallica... the first album was ok... besides that... metallica are garbage as far as I'm concerned...
Imagine coming home from school in 1981 and you suddenly listen to this song being played on radio for the first time and realize that everything is going to change in music from now
Call it what you want. Black Metal. Death Metal. Venom took it to a whole new level in the late 70's, early 80's. Any metalhead should be happy. And greatful. A 40 plus metalhead!!!!!!!!
Venom obviously influenced all forms of extreme metal. There are of course many debates about what genre they are, but I think they should simply be called extreme metal. Calling them thrash metal and black metal both makes sense though, these claims are in my opinion both backed up by legitimate arguments. Furthermore I see no reason for metal fans to hate on other genres, I love all forms of extreme metal. Thrash, Death, Black, Grind, old and new, it's all fucking metal and I love it.
They're black metal in its purest form. everything you mention , came after. Venom is black metal, because musically they did things that had not been done at that point, plus the image, and lyrical stance made them the first black metal band. take this point, boxers from almost 150 years ago hardly resemble their counterparts today, but are still called "boxers". venom , while being the root of Bathory , Mayhem, Emperor and those bands, does not sound like them, but they evolved from Venom. Venom is as black metal as it gets.
It's like the comments that preceded mine didn't even read the original post or if they did, they didn't comprehend it in the slightest. Both come out frantically waving the black metal label as if to say dude you're wrong when the original post agrees with that position in a manner of speaking. Some people just have to think they're right no matter what
Venom scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I first heard Manitou on some British metal compilation in Texas when I was 11 or 12. It was still new music back then, 82 or 83.
I was at work and stood up for a minute to grab some coffee, when I returned to my desk someone had left a jehova's witness pamphlet upon my keyboard which said: "what does the bible mean to you?". I put it aside and while trembling and cold sweating, quickly looked for anything Venom in youtube just in case someone had cast an evil eye spell upon me. Now after listening to this I feel so much better and relieved. That was a very close call. Thanks Venom for saving my soul right on time... again :)
You'll see on judgement day the sad true of losing your soul and you'll find yourself in the real hell a place of fire and you'll be burning for a long period of time. May God have mercy on your soul
I'm gonna go with this guy. Although I think they inspired the dark themes of Black Metal, they were a big influence to Thrash Metal, along with Motorhead.
First generation of the black metal.. My mom said... This band is very important..for exam ur writing up coming.. Black metal..black metal my selibus..
Venom's live album called "A little night music" is one the best live albums ever put out by anyone. You can hear just how incredibly loud they was that night at the Hammer, They played there quite a few times but this one recording was absolutely stellar, They played most of their killer songs and they sounded immaculate, The sound coming out of cronus's bass was like thunder, You can literally feel it shatter your soul if you crank it up on a good system, I was reading some reviews on it from various places and they was giving it 2 stars and ragging on it. These people nowadays don't know good sounding metal even if it was up their asses, Don't they know how hard it is to play your music exactly and to have that kinda sonic quality when playing at the Hammer, Its pure metal destruction this live album is and I'd put it up against any other live album, A little night music by Venom quite possibly one the best sounding metal of album of all time
if i remember correctly. that live album had "Love Amongst The Dead".. what album is that from?? I've been a VENOM fan since 1985 and thats still a mystery to me.
What I'm trying to say is that venom is the beginning of extreme metal in general and even if you don't like them you should grant their great contribution to metal.
I remember playing this record a ton when it came out. My friends and I thought it ruled, but yet we felt that Venom was a kind of a joke we were all in on. Kind of ironic that the future bands took their image somewhat serious.
My mate lived next to the lead singer (Clive Archer) at that time in Haltwhistle , man great nights pubs never shut if you know what i mean. best time of my life. haltwhistle people are great. love this band , changed my life.Thank you for the vid.
eh uma mistura de tudo essa musica eu acho mais heavy metal, mas eles tem music meio thrash ,com black metal venom eh foda pra mim foi a melhor banda q tinha nos anos 80
GODFATHERS OF BLACK METAL. And no one else. Went to the Tour back then in Zurich, Switzerland. Supporting act. Metallica. And, no, don't believe what some people wants you to believe. Venom were far better for shure. VEEEENOOMMM!
Respect - they gave birth to heavy music, inspiring hellhammer and mayhem to create black metal and inspiring chuck schuldiner to create death metal, pretty sure they influenced thrash too.
Venom may look like clowns compared to modern black metal, but DAMN, were they important and revolutionary. Catchy riffs and brutality! Arguably the best black metal band ever for their influence.
Doesn't sound anything like black metal tbh. Black metal as a genre didn't exist when venom released that album. This is quintessential crossover thrash.
@@aintfalco7968 Venom was the first, regardless of sounding similar to first wave / second wave / modern day. They were influential. Others followed and formed their own craft.
motorhead and venom could be said to have invented the heavy metal "mindset." black sabbath mightve started the sound but these guys were the ones to give it an ethos and a subculture.
