Been watching your program since I started taking care of VFTs. In our country, Philippines, some growers use water that comes out of air conditioners and it works fine and costs nothing. Just sharing some of our practices here. More power to your program and looking forward to your carnivorous plant nursery.

Lots of good tips there. One thing to be careful of is a lot of water labeled distilled will say in fine print that minerals have been added back in for taste. I guess it is used to mix baby formula. If it doesn't say that, and if it tastes really flat, you're good to go. I used rain water caught in the open usually. Another thing, I have an unfinished attic without heat, and with a decent window. I usually put them up there when if it's going to be in the teens outside, or below 32 for an extended time. Better than putting them in the refrigerator at least! They're cold hardy in their own way, but in a way where you can also picture them freezing and dying like tomatoes if it's cold enough Would be interesting to know just how much cold they can take. Probably more than I expect.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
Ya, that is a good callout. Definitely don't want distilled water with minerals added back in! I had several freeze solid for about a week last year, most made it but a few did not. So, I think I wouldn't let them go more than a week at a time under 32. But, that's just speculation. There isn't an exact science to it. I'm sure it all depends on where the flytraps came from and what that specific cultivar can tolerate. Even with typicals, there is such a wide array of different types.

The information on the tag to the venus flytrap that i got was at least better than most others. "Place the plant light, preferably direct sunlight. Keep regularly moist. Water in the saucer, preferably with rain water. No fertilizer, but likes to be fed with minor insects." Not very in depth, but atleast nothing that will kill it

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Месяц назад
That's a good question. No hard rules here. It depends on your intent. If your intent is to divide, you can split off parts of the rhizome. If your intent is just to have a big healthy plant, maybe you leave it in tact. There are the obvious, when you take the soil off, separate rhizomes will just fall off. These are easy candidates to divide and repot.

Lmao I know on the plant care sheet you mean plant name as in the species of plant/their common name but I have a habit of naming my plants awkwardly common names so my sheet would literally be things like Tom, Bob, Frank, Agatha, Lisa, Alex, etc and that thought just cracked me up. Thought I’d share and maybe convert some of you other plant lovers to do the same. It’s the best when showing other people your plants cuz instead of being like “oh this is my aloe Vera plant, this is my ZZ plant, this is my Venus fly trap” you’d introduce them with a strange sense of personification as you would another person with their strangely human names like “this is Bob, this is his best friend Frank, and the man across the shelf is Tom with his new neighbor Lisa” and just the utterly confused faces as people try to process it is absolutely hilarious. My favorite running gag and it just makes plant raising so much more fun 😂 Edit: it’s even better if you have animals like I do bc I have a cat that tries to chew on some of my plants every now and then and he’s got a name that already turns heads so getting onto him with guests around is a hoot since I’ll literally say something like “Lucifer stop chewing on Frank he’s already having a bad week” so nonchalantly while my guest just has a momentary crisis of pure confusion. 10/10 would recommend to everyone lmao

@CarnivorousPlantsHub

You can do that, it's probably fine. But I like to remove all the old susbtrate, just to make sure i get any critters or mold/mildew off the plant. If you really trust the old substrate, it's probably okay, but if you don't know where the old substrate came from, I'd try to get rid of all of it.

I have bought a Palram Plant Inn mini Greenhouse, or it could be described as a raised Cold frame., and now just waiting for the weather to improve to complete the build. A new home for my Venus Flytraps. I am going to be growing carniverous plants, but mainly Venus Flytraps in the future I have purchased x4 standard typical plants from my local B&Q DIY Store. X3 of them was a £1 and one was £5 new stock, at the moment they are kept outside, unless I know there is going to be a hard frost they are placed in a bucket with a lid to stop my x2 Siamese Cats from destroying them, and then kept near the back door of the house where it is quite cold and a good air flow. I then put them back outside before the sun rises during the morning.with no lid on the buckets. Placed outside in a large box with nylon netting to stop animals and birds feeding on them. I have a water distiller, but not used much of it because rain water keeps the Peat Moss Hydrated.. I had x3 B52 and lost them due to fungus Gnats. Thats why I do not suggest growing VFt in small coldframes, due to poor air flow. Also planting some Pinguicula grandflora x15 seeds hopefully these will protect the VFT in the future, once established. Also looking at purchaing some sundews.

You are going to have an incredible collection! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I don't personally use cold frames but know people who do. They also complain about airflow. The only real solution seems like some kind of fan on the inside, which could be a huge pain...

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
There are a few, and it's not really peoples fault, it's that these plants just don't follow most conventional planting wisdom. The water is probably the number one thing. Using regular tap water, not knowing they need a lower PPM water like distilled, rain or RO water. The next is probably light. These plants need a lot of sun/light. Usually, a windowsill is not enough for them. People buy them as house plants, not knowing that they thrive outside in full sun. The last one is that they need a winter dormancy. I think those 3 are probably the biggest offenders. Probably in that order. Maybe flip flop the water and light/sun.

Is filtered water safe I have a filtration system on my fridge and we change the filter once every year, is it safe to use on my plant?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
Probably not. Most filtration systems do not filter out all the minerals and dissolved solids. But, you can test the water with a TDS meter. If it's under 50, you should be okay. That's the only way to be sure. I use the zero water pitcher, it's the only countertop filtration system (Outside of RO Systems) that gets all dissolved solids out. If your filtration system is reverse osmosis you would be fine. I have a water drop system for my drinking water and it comes out around 80 ppm.

When moving it to outside in full sun, I'd start off for maybe 4 hours a day for the first week. Then jump to 5 hours the next week then 6 hours all the way up to as much sun as you can provide it outside. Sometimes the immediate exposure to full sun can be too much. It's better to acclimate them to any type of new climate. Thank you so much for being a subscriber, I'm so glad you found the channel. Carnivorous plants are awesome, it's a great hobby!

I guess what im wondering is if I should keep it under my growlight or not right now. Im not really sure what to do. I brought it home and put it under my grow light first thing. They were on a table inside the store so I thought it probably needed some sun. The trap itself looks pretty healthy although it did have a couple dead black traps that i pulled off. So yeah, im just curious about the dormancy for this plant. Should I have left it without the light/ sun for now until spring? 🤷

Thank you for this video! I have a few questions regarding on dormancy. I have my VFTs in my unheated garage since the end of October when the weather was getting cold. The temp inside my garage had stayed between 30 and 45 since, but now we're into January, the temp is below 40 and at night mid to low 30s. I live in PA and after this snowstorm my location just got, my VFT's media, which is sphagnum moss and perlite, had frozen. It's been like this for two days and I can't thaw it. I had been putting pieces of mulch on the top and wrapped the pots with a blanket for insulation, and they been at an east facing window in which they're getting morning sunlight daily. For their media to be frozen this long, is it normal and will they handle it? Also, how can I unthaw their media without doing it too fast?

@@fabbrice Will that help their media to unthaw? And how long should I keep them in the Refrigerator?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
The fridge should help them unthaw, most are kept between 35 and 40 degrees F. Its not going to kill them to be frozen for a couple days. I had a couple go about a week last year and they snapped out of it. Just make sure not to increase the temps by too much as this can trick them into coming out of dormancy. I would keep them in the fridge for as long as the temps go below 30 degrees. Also, it might be worth getting some kind of box you can put them in at night that you can insulate. If you could just get the temps up by 3-5 degrees, it should keep them from freezing completely. I used to keep mine in a storage container wrapped in a blanket and I could always get the temps up by a few degrees by doing this. At these temperatures, its not as important that they receive a lot of light. The lower the temps the less light the plant needs as they are not growing, just in a frozen state storing up energy.

I have three different cultivars of VFTs that I brought in from outside when it got cold. They're were all healthy plants during the summer and all are mostly black now. They all have new growth however -- a shoot here and there and a trap here or there. They definitely know it's off-season. Do they normally develop new growth during dormancy? They are currently on the inside window sill, where it's chilly. If they were outside, they would have frozen solid multiple times.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
Hi Jeff! Lots of factors with new growth during dormancy. Dormancy is triggered by two factors, temperatures and light. Usually temps reduce as well as light triggering the dormancy period. If it gets really cold say 30 degrees F and they are cut off from light, they will stop growing all together. If say it's 45 degrees F and they are getting 6 hours of light, they may still grow. You can take any combination of light and temperatures and see there are endless possibilities. So yes, it is normal for them to grow a bit during dormancy but it's also normal for them not to. Be careful with a cold window sill as they typically need below 50 degrees F to trigger a dormant period. An unheated room or garage is usually the best. They can stave off a couple days of freezing but I wouldn't let them freeze for long. Overwintering them with pine needles, mulch or other insulating type materials is a good idea if they must be left outside. I do have a full dormancy video, if you would like to watch! Gives out way more info than I could ever give out in a comment! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qz-TJW_TpQU.html

I totally understand that there are a few out there that have made it work. This is a beginner video and the vast majority of beginners, if they put it on their window sill, they are going to kill it. I see this over and over again, light starved venus flytraps on their death bed because they are left in a window sill. I even advised that some people have been able to acclimate them, but I strongly recommend against for beginners. There is always exceptions to rules. With that being said, I'm really happy you have had success in your window sill. it's nice not having to leave them out in the elements. I wish more windows were suited for venus flytraps.

So I have a question: I was wondering if the EAGLOD 50W grow light would be okay for the flytraps? It'd still be an E26 light bulb but I'm not sure if this would be too powerful for just ONE venus flytrap. Unless putting other plants near it would lessen the power spectrum? I might have more questions in the future, haha
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
Hi Meg, I don't have any experience with that specific light. But at 50W you should be good to go! You might need to keep an eye on your plants to make sure it's not burning them. I'd start 12-15 inches back and adjust based on how the plants look. The traps should start to turn red just make sure they aren't burning. Ask away, I'm always open to answering questions!

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
Depends on how deep you are in dormancy. If the plant is fully dormant. Usually 35 degrees F or less, then no light is really needed as growth has stopped completely. If the temps are higher, like between 35 and 45 degrees F, probably 5 or so hours a day as growth has slowed WAY down but still happens a bit. Anything above 50 degrees is barely even dormant and should get close to full light exposure.

I would not use fertilize spikes, no. This would likely kill them. You need a very low concentrate of fertilizer. Most people use Maxsea if they are going to fertilize. Make sure to do your research though, mixing the correct amount and how you apply it to the plant is important. You should only get it on the leaves, never in the soil.

It could go either way. it depends on where the water comes from. I've seen natural water with really high TDS and I've seen it close to 0. The only real way to know is to measure with a TDS. One tip though, after you get the water from the stream, leave it on your counter to get to room temperatures. Temperature does impact TDS readings, too hot or too cold can give you false readings. @CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
Most coconut husk is harvested close to a shoreline. Which usually means that the husk has been soaked in salt due to being close to the ocean. If this is the case, you have to soak it a LOT in order to use it. I recommend staying away from coconut husk all together unless you are 100% certain it was harvested way inland and away from salts. Without major overwintering, you should let a flytrap go under freezing for very long. They can survive it for a while, but not all winter long. A Sarr will be a little more tolerant but neither plant will survive -22F without some help overwintering.

Just make sure you really stay on the water when you get to 100 plus. If you are going to be out of town, don't rely on leaving a tray of water. Also i forgot to mention but they are growing tall leaves as well, looks a lot like spring leaves but its summer!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
It's really hard to say. There are lots of different factors here. How old is the plant? The age really determines how many traps are big. Also, one part of the rhizome can be producing mature pitchers and another part may have started growing a new plant. This is pretty common with venus flytraps. I don't think many of my plants are producing the same size traps every time. Another thing could be the trauma they go through when being sent in the mail to a completely different climate. They do need to acclimate to their new environment and sometimes they can do some funky things while they are acclimating. Just continue to give them proper care and they will snap out of it. Predatory Plants is a great nursery, I've ordered from them before and trust they sell high quality plants!

There are many things that could be wrong, but most likely its just going through some repotting shock. It's really common for venus flytraps. It's not uncommon to lose existing traps after repotting.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 года назад
You just have to wait. However, flytraps do have a trait that helps them with this scenario. Often times, if they miss an insect or maybe a rain drop triggers the response, they need a secondary stimulus to trigger the actual process of releasing the enzymes and trying to digest the insect. If nothing is inside the trap, there won't be a second stimulus and the trap will open much sooner and not go through the process of trying to digest the insect. It should open after a couple days instead of the normal week or so. If you feed a flytrap a dead insect, you must trigger the trap then massage the outside for a minute or two to trigger that secondary response.

I feel that man! We had 48 and Sunny today, last week we were looking at a high of 16 F. Weather is nuts this time of the year for me. I get jealous when I see all the people putting their traps out saying dormancy is over. Lol. I don't trust outside overnight lows until probably late May early June.
