I bought a couple venus fly traps in plastic tubes in a grocery store a couple years ago as an impulse purchase. But don't worry, I have a green thumb. I leave the pots outside in a shallow container, which I fill with reverse osmosis water. I keep the venus fly traps in full sun, on a small table in the middle of my garden. Tons of bugs, of course, so the venus fly traps are very good at feeding themselves. I live in zone six, so I take them inside during the winter, and leave them on the drafty windowsill in my plant room. This is a spare room in my house where I keep my houseplants in the winter (as well as my hamster year-round lol) away from artificial light, so as not to disrupt their circadian rhythms. If taken care of, a grocery store venus fly traps do very, very well.

@briannamarie7850
@briannamarie7850 4 года назад
Vancien Villafarra it’s just calming to watch I guess. I like to garden. It won’t shock the plant if you do it correctly and half the time the soil plants are in, especially from big box stores, isn’t beneficial or even soil at all. It’s a cheap mix of dirt and sand and filler. I just like watching people plant things.

See, i don’t do a good job when It comes to caring about carnivorous plants. I’ve had several Venus fly traps right at my window, direct sunlight etc. and they all burned. I really gave up to be honest but recently saw a sarracenia Purpurea while I was shopping for my other plants. I have it for about three months now and it’s doing really good. I might get a Venus again, just to try, since I gained a bit more experience with plants recently. Thank you very much for this video!
@ckotcher1

I’ve had VTP’s die too but It’s actually easy to take care of Venus Flytraps if you find the right instruction video. The first and most important thing is to keep them hydrated in separate bowl filled with distilled water and always keep them outside in warm temps with plenty of sun. They really do the rest by attracting and eating small bugs.
@Agui007
@Agui007 4 года назад
Have you kept them in an area which gets plenty of circulation? I have a VFT which I have had since 2012/13 and it used to be on a sunny window which was also cool and shady. It certainly is an art.
@leighakymberlynn2264
@leighakymberlynn2264 4 года назад
What water are you using? VFT do NOT like hard water or minerals in general. Use distilled water or rain water. Also, they can't live in potting soil. The roots will burn, again, from minerals and fertilizers. DO NOT ADD FERTILIZER. They will die. They also have a dormancy period in the Winter and need a temperate climate to live in. They are not from the tropics, they are native to North and South Carolina. So they need a dormancy period in order to live.
@retroclown4612
@retroclown4612 4 года назад
@everyone who commented: thank you very much! After I had posted the comment 9 months ago, I got another small VFT and also a few other carnivorous plants, I thought I should give it another try. I am currently holder of about 153 plants in total, not only carnivorous. :) all my carnivorous plants are alive and doing extremely well in my room, they are healthy and hardly ever get a bad leaf. I water almost all my plants with rainwater, I don’t fertilize my carnivorous plants and am keeping them in a special soil mixture I think works the absolute best. so thank you, again, for all the Support, I am very happy with my plantkeeping at the moment and I’m definitely getting more very soon. Can’t ever let go of this addiction, haha. Oh and btw, in the area I live in, the tap water is very clean, but hard unfortunately, that’s why I can’t water my plants with that, but I found that rainwater OR distilled water do their job very fine.

Good video about a subject that confuses many. The vast majority of prepackaged VFT are produced by just a few companies in the US, and I feel safe saying that ALL of them are tissue culture clones of either the straight species or the King Henry cultivar ( also possibly the Dente variety)- they are all identical, not much chance of an 'unnamed cultivar' showing showing up. If you were to get them from smaller independent growers ( not in cubes)then possibly. They are all produced on a strict schedule and packaged (marketing) as soon as they reach a certain age. Most probably do not survive past a certain time unless they are bought early in their lives and treated correctly. That said, the one you got did not look bad, and even the declining specimens can be resuscitated if they aren't too far gone. I produce about 5-6 thousand flytraps a year for the retail market. In addition to the straight species, I grow Dente, King Henry, Red Dragon, and Red Sawtooth- all from TC labs. I also do seedlings ( either chance crosses or deliberate) from my nursery. The large operations ( cubes and cups)have no need for any diversity- it's much easier with all TC clones
@xavierp4035
@xavierp4035 4 года назад
You know, the plant you rescued in your video did not need repotting. Your plant looked healthy enough all it needed was distilled watering and some sunlight. Repotting should be discouraged unless a flytrap is currently in the wrong media and/or before spring before the end of their dormancy. It takes longer for a flytrap to have its roots disturbed(during active growing)to fully recover rather than keeping it happy in its current container. Most of my larger flytraps grow happily in 4" pots and 3" pots planted individually. I use 6" pots if I plan to have more than 5 plants at once. Happy growing

I know they haven't seen sun light, so, do I put them just for a few hours day on and day on until get used to it or immediately full sunlight. It is March they both seem like they are barely coming out from dormancy. Imma repot them of course. I just want to take care of them. There were plenty of them 🥺😢 in those boxes. I was so sad they were like that. I was so happy to finally found them and I'm anxious since I dont want them to die. They are so cute.

Janice Inkheart Same here! I’m not a very experienced gardener but I was lucky enough to find these in a Florida gift shop during February vacation. I brought them home and kept them in the corner of a windowsill. I didn’t open the window so the sunlight was filtered through the glass to the plant. That seems to have worked well so far and my plant looks pretty healthy. Every now and then (since the weather is getting nicer), I open the window to give them some fresh air. The sun comes in nicely and it allows more bugs to get caught in the traps. Best of luck with your plant and I hope this method might work for you, too!
@eccremocarpusscaber5159
@eccremocarpusscaber5159 4 года назад
Brianna Casey filtered sunlight is light coming through some net blinds or something like that. You are exposing your plants too full sun if there is only a pane of glass in between it and the sunshine. They like it anyway, but just in case you start to grow something that definitely needs filtered sunlight. 😃

I think many of the flytraps you get in the terrariums are seed grown. Here in the US Lowe's has flytraps under the name "Bug biting plants" and I have many flytraps from them that don't really seem to be of any cultivar at all. I'm familiar with the G16 clone Walmart uses but Lowe's flytraps seem to be all genetically different from each other which I love.

I had 2 VFTs so I gave 1 to my brother, it came time to repot them and we decided to do this together and my brother snapped the root on his and lost interest in it and gave it to me, I replanted it in a hole I made in the peat moss and gave it water then put it under a LED light expecting the plant to die anyway, to my surprise it had a new mouth forming, it was growing!!! I saved a plant from dying!! New soil and some water made a new mouth, I put it outside and it hunted flies!!Just a note for growers who are new to this peat moss and pure water will make traps(I had 6 on mine) but insects make traps grow faster. LED lights are good but sunlight is better.

If you don’t like the look of perlite I highly recommend a 50/50 sand/peat moss mix. That’s what I use for my VFT and sarracenia’s, and in my opinion drains better than perlite. My VFT was a rescue as well but in a lot worse condition. It’s doing fantastic now and has at least one new growth point after it’s first summer since I bought it.

Thanks for this. I picked up exactly this brand of death cube last week and I was confused that it said 'no sunlight' yet everything I've read said it needs sunlight. I think I won't repot it for now, but I'll repot it next spring.

Hi, thanks for this video. I have a question. I bought my death cube VFT a week ago and I ordered some carniverous plant soil (peat moss + pearlite) and have a new plastic pot (4 in diameter, 5-6 in deep) ready to put it in. Should I repot this plant as soon as possible or should I wait a while first? Thanks for any help!

- looks like I got the last two at Lowes - one is fairly healthy the other was bone dry and withering with a lot of black leaves and finger things - I had some as a kid but that was well over 60 years ago - So this is a hoot for me, I'm in Az., so I don't know if outside is a good idea,

If it's not too late I'd recommend giving them a bit of sunshade because the sun in Arizona is pretty intense. As for the heat I used to live in Oklahoma and experienced 100-115°F weather during late summer and they did fairly well.

For a CP in a death cube, it seems to be pretty healhty and the sphagnum is a quality-choice compared to the 95%peat+5%perlite bad compagnies do but they really should add the name of the cultivar on the pot. Instead of selling unamed VFT. From little experience i saw, you shouldn't press firmly the peat in the pot.

I just killed my brand new Venus fly trap today. I’m sad snd pissed. It got too hot and the entire green of the plant wilted and died. Most I can do now is cut off all the dead foliage and hope that the root ball isn’t dead and will sprout new green. The rhizome is still white, so it’s probably still alive, but it’s 50/50 now.
@DanteTimberwolf
@DanteTimberwolf 2 года назад
Probably wayyy too late but as long as the rhizome tissue is white and firm you should be okay. Even if the main growth point is dead just put it back in the soil and it will develop a new growth point.

I have a bag of peat moss and another of perlite that's about 3 years old in my garage (Had flytraps in the past). Would they still be fine to use or should I get fresh medium if I want my plants to last?
@ericgillin4319

death cube, that was funny but true. the thing I would also do is water it heavy for a couple of days to get any bad water residue out of it , unless you do what you did and removed all the soil and then you do not have to worry. I jest bought / rescued, two plants. the first one I watered heavy for two days then transplanted using the soil included, the second one , the moss is so heavy the water hardy runs thru it. that one needs a soil change. would also like to see a update video. I know my first one I rescued, is two times bigger, and it has only been two weeks

Shriveling up in sunlight isn't really a problem in England. I do put my VFT under a daylight lamp when there is dull weather in winter/spring. My first one got a fungal infection and died in winter.

I also have been keeping our pitchers outside under a tall bush in a shady corner of our garden. Because the air gets so dry during the day here, I’ve been misting them. I meant to say that in the comments before. At night, by the ocean, it gets humid enough to keep them happy. Dropped down to 52 degrees last night. It’s winter here. Our tenants left behind a sandbox full of play sand we’ve been using to mix up low nutrient based soil for our Aloe and other cactus plants. Will the play sand work mixed with sphagum for traps and pitchers? What ratio? Should we soak the moss first as you said in the video? Should we use perlite instead? I’m starting a carnivore plant museum but I don’t want to be disappointed. Also, I’ve seen them stored over lava rocks as well. One of the Venus traps has already caught a fly today. The pitchers I can’t tell. The pitchers are dying off the plants quickly. Should I feed the pitchers? Before I move them or after? How often? Should I cut off the dead pitchers? I’ve looked up a ton of info on Dr. Google. Haha. The best info I always go for is RU-vid because everyone who takes the trouble to make videos seem to have firsthand experience.
@xxpowwowbluexx
@xxpowwowbluexx 2 года назад
They don’t need misting, but they do need full sun! They should be sitting in a water tray. Look up Sarracenia Northwest for how to grow Pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps, successfully.

Hello! I am a beginner at growing flytraps and made the unfortunate mistake of not reading labels and gave my flytrap distilled water for babies that had vitamins like potassium, they started to die and the traps fell off but the stems are still green. I purchased a gallon of pure distilled water, can I save my flytraps? Will I need new Pete moss/soil?
