The peak of Women's Tennis is 2000-2015 - Venus, Serena, Sharapova, Clijsters, Henin, Davenport, Hingis, Capriati, Dementieva, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Mauresmo, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Kvitova. We were so lucky!
I would have taken it back a little farther because Evert, Navratilova, Graf, Sabatini, Seles, Hingis, Capriati, and Pierce gave us some of the best tennis. You could add the Williams' sisters into that group also, as well as Davenport.
That felt like a gladiator battle in the coliseum. Star quality we don't have these days. Venus was so fearless in this title run, and I love her winning reaction. At her best, on grass? Nobody could beat her.
Adding an interview or press conference to the highlights adds so much more to it. You get a little more context and a better idea of where her head was at when playing the match. Very appreciated!
Venus’ athleticism is unique. I’ve never seen someone in women’s tennis moving like her, it’s a joy to see her moving in court and going after her shots, the way she jumps every time she hits the ball! It’s incredible! She would have been amazing in any sport that she played. I’m glad she chose tennis because I love tennis 😅
Venus Williams fore hand was very lethal in this slam as well as Wimbledon 2007 and 2008. Sharapova played extremely well. Prime Venus on grass is just a different beast.
This was some amazing tennis. Maria was actually the defending champion so there were a lot of dynamics there. Both were hungry and capable. I still think Venus was the best grass court player of her generation win or lose. Has had many more wins though 🏆
this was really like a Royal battle...the runs, the hit,the scream, the pace, the volley, the competitiveness and btw this was the revenge for Serena।। ..What a match
Venus was winning Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001, and then Serena copied her result by winning in 2002 and 2003 and then Sharapova suddenly came to win in 2004, so you can imagine how much people anticipated this match in Wimbledon semifinal in 2005
The press acted STUNNED Venus could win. Sharapova’s 2004 title was earned. But I always saw it as her catching a rusty Serena at the right time. It was Never the Changing of the Guards certain* tennis fans wanted it to be.
@@seensay2132I know what you mean but Sharapova did went on to win 5 grand slams in her career across all surfaces. But was no changing of the guard Sharapova never won another Wimbledon title and only manage to beat Serena once after 2004 Wimbledon final. Sharapova lost 19 consecutive matches to Serena 2005-2019. The William sisters humbled Sharapova and this match is a perfect example she's couldn't compete with both William sisters at their best. Venus and Serena were too athletic and powerful for Sharapova.
Looking at this match, we see just how many weapons Venus possessed versus how many Sharapova lacked. Venus court coverage was phenomenal, her net play was incredible, her forehand was superb and her serve was amazing. She was a fierce competitor and was not about to lose this tournament. This is my absolute favorite match of Venus career and my favorite slam of hers.
This why I say prime Venus mops the floor with sharapova only thing sharapova did better in her career was that she was more consistent in the majors and sharapova and Venus did not play against each other consistently like Serena did I think we would’ve saw more dynamics and their matches if they played as much in my opinion, Venus would’ve edged her if she bought her best
@@westonmeyer3110 Hmmmm. Not what their head2head suggests. Venus came out of the gate beating Serena that is true. But Serena developed into the better player. Serena has the best serve, the better mental toughness, the better consistency, the better capacity to come back from set/match points, the better footwork, the better all around game period. That’s why Serena has 23GS titles. Thats why Serena is the GOAT. I will concede that at the net Venus is phenomenal, that’s part of the reason they have a 14-0 record when reaching doubles final but in no way is Venus the better player. Serena just wanted it more.
@@jobuck879 Venus said some short time ago how she regret not being as ambitious as Serena on court that maybe that would’ve made her won many more matches
@ism7588 I kind of get where he's coming from. The finals was more thrilling and interesting than this match, but I feel Venus played at a higher level in this match than the finals.
In those years, I only watched the matches of their great generation! They're all super! And the fact that the sisters won twelve Wimbledon is beyond the realm of fiction.
Venus movement was amazing on grass it helped her win alot of Wimbledon titles. Sharapova struggles to hit through Venus. This match affected Sharapova confidence on grass she never won another Wimbledon title and Venus brilliance exposed Sharapova game. Venus thrashed her in 4th round Wimbledon 2007 was the first time Sharapova lost before the quarter finals at Wimbledon since 2003.
yes I think you are right, even she luckily reached the final in 2011 but got schooled by kvitova proved her wimbledon title was a fluke since serena had a off day and she didn't face venus.
it mu it must been fun for Sharapova to have seen so many winners flying right past her, especially in the first set of this much. i bet that she /loved/ that.
Venus could have won this in two easy sets like 2007, but as usual she tends to have mini chokes or bad shot selection to make a match harder than it is. Not mentally strong like Serena and unfortunately this is why her career is always overshadowed by Serena.
