A magnificent spectacle of stars, scenery and choreography, this version of Verdi's Aïda is remastered from Sam Wanamaker's landmark production. It features monumental performances by Luciano Pavarotti as Radames and Margaret Price in the title role. The tensions which arise from Radames' love for Aida, a slave who is the daughter of the Ethiopian chieftain, Amonasro, and the jealousy this provokes in the daughter in Amneris, daughter of the Egyptian king, are portrayed in some of Verdi's most famous music.

Usually not celebrated for his insightful character portrayals or subtle dramatic credibility in a role, in this suitably sumptuous production Luciano Pavarotti shows that he has more than a staggeringly beautiful voice - when he can be bothered. Good close-up camera work shows a thoroughly committed artist at his vocal and acting peak. It is a shame such artistic self-discipline was not more evident throughout his remarkable career. Considering he made his SFO debut in 1967 with Mirella Freni in La Boheme (a year before his Met debut), this video shows how much his stage presence and general acting ability had matured. In comparison Margaret Price seems as cold and stony as one of the Egyptian obelisks which predictably overwhelm the stage, whereas the exotic and decidedly glamorous Amneris of Stefania Toczyska makes one wonder why the gallant and victorious Egyptian general would have dumped her for a plump, über-patriotic, father-fixated Ethiopian zelot. This is a performance worth seeing again, not especially for Sam Wanamaker’s lavish and expensive production (see Franco Zeffirelli for that) but to witness what Pavarotti could do when he really wanted to. (As an aside, I would add that his Enzo in La Giaconda two years before was even better).

Since we are criticizing, the music was wonderful with a wonderful cast, the acting poor, the chorus needed singers, the staging amateurish, the customs terrible but the audience was attentive! Other than that.....

"a plump, über-patriotic, father-fixated Ethiopian zelot" - that's not the way I'd put it, but it's a way of saying who Aida is. She is not a glamorous and exotic seductress. This is not Margaret Price's fault.

I had to come over here to listen to Pavarotti so he could wash the sound of Elton John's pop version of Aida. I'm sure it's a failing of mine, but all I hear is the same cords, etc from his songs from the last forty-five years. Sing to me, maestro. Sing to me!

People familiar with Aida will be aware that the captions in this film are wrong: there are two scenes in Act 1, and rather obviously, the triumphal march takes place in Act 2, scene 2 not Act 1 Scene 4. The singing is outstanding among the principals, but the production is poor with, unfortunately quite common, meaningless ballet sequences in Act 2 scene 1, and Act 2 Scene 2. One also notes the by now chronic RU-vid omission of dates and details, as you have to google the production to know if was performed in 1981.

@@JeremiahAlphonsus First of all, do you know when this production was? It was 1981. He was 46. His voice may not have been at its strongest but his technical mastery of its use was probably at its peak and I would argue better than in the 1960s when he would have been only in his early 30s. I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree.

Anybody that actually speaks Italian or has read the translation. It's all superficial bullshit. Opera is nothing more than the 1600's version of a soap opera, absolutely tedious and ultimately pointless. It's inexplicable to me that it's somehow considered a high art form today when it's anything but. Certainly it's origins had nothing to do with being a high art form at all.

Unless you sing it, dear. You see, every professional singer must bring the emotional intelligence to the stage in order for the audience to be moved...not everyone understands the Italian language; many love Opera because they can experience the story, sung with deep understanding of the singer's emotions. In fact, finding a personal life experience that is as close as possible to the arias or performances make it easy, due to those feelings. Actors learn this skill as well. A classic, vocal instructor discovered my voice at 40. All those years, this gift laid dormant inside my heart. The greatest benefit was having a strong and powerful voice that had never been used unlike the young women who started in their twenties. Within eighteen months, I was performing in Italy. It helped a lot, to know Italian. My musicians were sent from the Heavens. Perhaps one of the most unexpected experiences was at a business conference. I believe you may enjoy this story. One of the participants dared me to sing an aria, the next night for 400 people at dinner. There I was without my musicians, no music and about to sing a capella. No one knew anything about this...They put down their siverware and faced me. I sang one of my favorite songs by Puccini and sat down. I was completely stunned by what happened next. My friend kept elbowing me and telling me I was receiving a standing ovation. I stood up, took a bow and sat down again. They clapped and said, "Brava!" You see, I was still in that glorious emotional vibe of the aria. My girlfriend told me to stand up again. She told me they had formed a line to give me flowers. I said, "What? Where are they getting flowers?" She smiled and told me, from the centerpieces on the tables! I can't explain the feeling of shock that moved through my whole body. I thanked each person with honor and humility forthe red roses. I couldn't carry them all, so my friends helped and two men in tuxedos opened the double doors for us. They congratulated me with gratitude. I will never forget that evening. The gentleman who dared me was overwhelmed with joy. I had lipstick on my ears from smiling so big! 😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you for inspiring me to share one of my favorite experiences. It was very special for me to recount such a spectacular night!

Call me biased but Pavarotti is famous for a reason. He outshines everyone but I found the singing and orchestra to be excellent. I am very disappointed with the dance choreography. The dancers were not in unison and dancers kept falling out of their turns. Extremely sloppy. Good choreography isn’t constantly having a dancer do turns. Their movement on stage was so loud too. That’s lazy choreography. With dance choreography being my forte, I couldn’t let that slide.

Great video. My wife and I had seson tickets honoring the last year of Kurt Adler. We were disappointed that he wasn't conducting, but Novarro was handsome and great. Re Celeste Aida, the video brings the superb voice of Luciano to full life. Even in the 20th row of the orchestra we and others were a bit surprised at this great man's apparent lack of full power. But the video proves that he was picture perfect. The real surprise was Margaret Price. She was power plus and fabulous as Aida.

I remember this production so well. Margaret Price became indisposed early in the run. Luckily, there was another Price in town preparing to sing Il Trovatore. For one blissful evening, Leontyne filled in for the ailing Margaret, and to my knowledge, it was the only time she sang a complete opera with Pavarotti. The energy and excitement in the house that night was off the charts! Not a ticket to be had, even in standing room, so I walked in the stage door, checked my name off the super's list on the wall, and proceeded to get lost in the catacombs down below! I will never forget those two hours of sheer anxiety waiting to be discovered and tossed out of the place! But, when the standing room doors opened, I was already in place and I could hear the stampede approaching from below, followed by the looks of several wondering how the hell this guy got here first! It was a fantastic production! Simon Estes, wow! Toczyska remarkable! But, I got to see and hear MY diva, sing HER opera, with the greatest tenor I ever saw. And it was touching to see this great tenor with an ego the size of all Italy, defer to Miss Price every chance he got. He realized it was going to be HER evening and he stood back and let her have it.

Oh ! I love your story about sneaking in to hear! My colleagues and I at La Fenice wanted to hear an Argerich-Kremer recital... of course there were no tickets.... where to listen from? Then we remembered the stage didn't cover the pit, so we went into the pit, sat against the pit wall. When they came on stage and bowed, they saw us in the pit and they cracked up. What a joy.

Постановка достойная самой оперы. Все в превосходной степени от исполнения до костюмов. Амнерис великолепна. Спасибо.
@СветланаКузнецова-у7ж9д

8:00 Celeste Aida - Romanza from Act I of the Italian opera Aïda by Giuseppe Verdi Libretto: Antonio Ghislanzoni Role: Radamès, an officer in the Egyptian army Voice Part: tenor Fach: dramatic tenor/heldentenor Setting: A hall in the Palace of the Kings at Memphis. Synopsis: Rumors of an impending war with Ethiopia have been circulating. Radamès has just been told by Ramfis that Isis has named a new, young man to command the Egyptian Army. Radamès wishes it were he so he could free Aida. Celeste Aïda, Radamès's aria from Aïda Se quel guerrier io fossi! If I were that warrior! Se il mio sogno si avverasse! If my dream came true! Un esercito di prodi da me guidato An army of brave men lead by me E la vittoria e il plauso di Menfi tutti! And all victories and the praise of Menfi E a te, mia dolce Aïda, And to you, my sweet Aida, Tornar di lauri cinto Returning wrapped in laurels Dirti: per te ho pugnato, I would say: I've fought for you, Per te ho vinto! I've won for you! Celeste Aïda, forma divina, Heavenly Aida, divine shape, Mistico serto di luce e fior, mystic garland of light and flowers, Del mio pensiero tu sei regina, you are queen of my thoughts, Tu di mia vita sei lo splendor. you are the splendour of my life Il tuo bel cielo vorrei ridarti, I would like to give you your sky back, Le dolci brezze del patrio suol : the sweet breeze of the fatherland: Un regal serto sul crin posarti, to put a regal garland on your heart Ergerti un trono vicino al sol, to build up a throne for you next to the sun ACT I Egypt, during the reign of the pharaohs. At the royal palace in Memphis, the high priest Ramfis tells the warrior Radamès that Ethiopia is preparing another attack against Egypt. Radamès hopes to command his army. He is in love with Aida, the Ethiopian slave of Princess Amneris, the king’s daughter, and he believes that victory in the war would enable him to free her and marry her. But Amneris loves Radamès, and when the three meet, she jealously senses his feelings for Aida. A messenger tells the King of Egypt and the assembled priests and soldiers that the Ethiopians are advancing. The king names Radamès to lead the army, and all join in a patriotic anthem. Left alone, Aida is torn between her love for Radamès and loyalty to her native country, where her father, Amonasro, is king. She prays to the gods for mercy. In the temple of Vulcan, the priests consecrate Radamès to the service of the god. Ramfis orders him to protect the homeland. ACT II Ethiopia has been defeated, and Amneris waits for the triumphant return of Radamès. When Aida approaches, the princess sends away her other attendants so that she can learn her slave’s private feelings. She first pretends that Radamès has fallen in battle, then says he is still alive. Aida’s reactions leave no doubt that she loves Radamès. Amneris, certain she will be victorious over her rival, leaves for the triumphal procession. At the city gates the king and Amneris observe the celebrations and crown Radamès with a victor’s wreath. Captured Ethiopians are led in. Among them is Amonasro, Aida’s father, who signals his daughter not to reveal his identity as king. Radamès is impressed by Amonasro’s eloquent plea for mercy and asks for the death sentence on the prisoners to be overruled and for them to be freed. The king grants his request but keeps Amonasro in custody. The king declares that as a victor’s reward, Radamès will have Amneris’s hand in marriage. ACT III On the eve of Amneris’s wedding, Ramfis and Amneris enter a temple on the banks of the Nile to pray. Aida, who is waiting for Radamès, is lost in thoughts of her homeland. Amonasro suddenly appears. Invoking Aida’s sense of duty, he makes her agree to find out from Radamès which route the Egyptian army will take to invade Ethiopia. Amonasro hides as Radamès arrives and assures Aida of his love. They dream about their future life together, and Radamès agrees to run away with her. Aida asks him about his army’s route, and just as he reveals the secret, Amonasro emerges from his hiding place. When he realizes that Amonasro is the Ethiopian king, Radamès is horrified by what he has done. While Aida and Amonasro try to calm him, Ramfis and Amneris step out of the temple. Father and daughter are able to escape, but Radamès surrenders to the priests. ACT IV Radamès awaits trial as a traitor, believing Aida to be dead. Even after he learns that she has survived, he rejects an offer by Amneris to save him if he renounces Aida. When he is brought before the priests, he refuses to answer their accusations and is condemned to be buried alive. Amneris begs for mercy, but the judges will not change their verdict. She curses the priests. Aida has hidden in the vault to share Radamès’s fate. They express their love for the last time while Amneris, in the temple above, prays for Radamès’s soul. ©2018 The Metropolitan Opera

Hasan Hany I heard him live when I was ushering at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh. They called and asked me to usher something else and I about dropped the phone when she said "You wouldn't be interested in ushering for Pavarotti, would you?" It was only a concert, not a whole opera, but still fabulous. He was supposed to come back to do Tosca the next year but he got sick. :) He had such a distinctive voice, you could pick him out from any other tenor.

Radames is one of the biggest simps in the history of opera. Pavarotti is one of the biggest actors in the history of opera. Those things doesn't match well together (it's just a joke, Verdi was a genius and the love story is well built)
