Apart of the fact that this rendition is extraordinary, I want to mention the fact that the public awaited 25 seconds to start to clap. That was beautiful
I. Requiem - Kyrie 0:06 II. Sequenz: - Dies irae 9:33 - Tuba mirum 11:51 - Liber scriptus 15:05 - Quid sum miser 20:09 - Rex tremendae 23:50 - Recordare 27:20 - Ingemisco 31:45 - Confutatis 35:05 - Lacrymosa 40:13 III. Offertorio 46:28 IV. Sanctus 56:47 V. Agnus Dei 59:20 VI. Lux aeterna 1:05:08 VII. Libera me 1:11:28
I'm alive for many years and learned to not be surprised for anything but this is the first time I see classic music compared do diazepam. And this Requiem above all!
The fugue beginning at 1:20:09 must be one of the most surprising, and yet beautiful moments in the piece. It's an incredible subject, and developed pretty aggressively, with stretti almost immediately after the four-part statement. It's a beautiful moment, and climactic in just the right way before the quiet ending. It must stand alongside Liszt's Dante Symphony as one of the best integrations of fugue in a Romantic orchestral work.
11:52 is where I start to cry every time. The trumpet players did a phenomenal job at projecting such deep emotion. I also picture this part as them looking death in the face, coming together, and choosing not to be afraid.
This orchestra is outstanding, I am so grateful for the many performances they are making available. This is a rather "operatic" reading, but then, that is the nature of Verdi's version of the Requiem. Ms Urmana stands out in a fantastic performance (as usual for her), but not to diminish the other excellent soloists. Perhaps the choir could have been larger......? A very enjoyable performance.
@@stephenmessick865 Aida premiered at 1871, three years before Requiem was premiered. If I'm correct, this is the next composition Verdi made after Aida so it is not coincidental if they are similar.
Seen this in a theatre as a staged version this evening. It was so intense i kept crying all the time and had numb, shaking hands and a numb face afterwards. That's what this music can do to you. Loved it
I am old and want this at my funeral. The whole orchestra and chorus, and those wonderful soloists, as well as the marvelous conductor. Please import them from Germany to Tucson, Arizona for me! I am so moved by this performance, so crisp and full of feeling. How does the soprano live through the Libera me?
I want the same wish from you David!!! .That is why the money that I am going to leave in my inheritance will be to pay for the orchestra and the soloists. The funeral ceremony will only be that all those who want to go see and listen to the Requiem feel free to do so, with that I will get to heaven. In this moment I remember the Funeral fron Lady Dee with a part of the requiem.
Onore a te, Giuseppe Verdi.
Love it! My favourite part is "tuba mirum". You can almost see the dead rising from ther graves to the sound of the trumpet. Makes the hair on my arms stand on end! Also this will be my first concert after Covid. I can't tell you how excited I am!!
i listen to this through shitty quiet af off brand airpods, but i'm sure listening to this in good quality or even live would make a grown man cry. i don't know what Giuseppe Verdi was going through writing this, and i'm scared to know the truth.
The comparison is not entirely fair, because the hr-Sinfonierochester belongs to and is funded by the regional public broadcasting corporation, whereas the Berliner Philharmoniker are a foundation under public law and are partially dependent on other sources of income.
@@GMahlerVerehrer Thank you for pointing that out. But, this is what RU-vid does to some people - it makes them think every recording, concert, film - everything they want - should be free. They get unhappy if it isn't.
Singing this with my NYC choir at Carnegie hall in May which will probably be the last time I sing with them for a while which is sad. This was also the first piece I ever sang at Carnegie hall with John Rutter conducting. Amazing experience! I'm sure I will have tears while singing this in May! Just gorgeous!
I am sure you will have tears almost constantly and even actually FEEL your heart beat with unbearable joy and excitement repeatedly. I envy you being able to sing in May. Wonderful!.....I sand with a choir/choral for THIRTY years in Long Beach, NY....we did almost all the Requiems, Berlioz, Mozart, etc...Unfortunately, we did not have the scope to tackle such as this Verdi's. I am now 87 yr old and what I miss most in my life is SINGING with such a wonderful group I was blessed to be part. The conductor was also a MD and he was amazing for keeping us together for THIRTY years. We did sing at the World's Fair in NY back them. ENJOY this wonderful event of your life!!
The fact that Ms. Urmana takes the mezzo-sopran instead the soprano is baffling to me. I know sometimes she takes a role of a lower voice in operas but I've heard her with Bychkov performing this piece and it was sublime. Her voice has a smoother tone, better breathing control, she doesn't struggle during the long phrases and her "perdendosi lift" to pianissimo at 01:19:38 is the most ethereal. Not heard since the great Caballe. Her voice has got heft to it and of course, her final high C at the climax Libera Me explodes like a nuclear bomb. As I was listening to this, I was like "Urmana is literally right there! Let her sing it."
Like other well-known mezzos (Verrett, Bumbry, Horne, Ludwig), who have made forays into soprano realms with varying degrees of success, VE was obviously miscast as Aida (Met broadcast), but, later, superb as Amneris. Same with Eboli, another high mezzo role. And the Verdi Requiem. Has she ever sung Kundry? Ortrud? Would be a knockout.
Stupendous Requiem and outstanding performance! Verdi used his incompatible mastery of vocal ensemble in this masterpiece. For too long I was so enamored with Mozart’s Requiem, I wouldn’t want to listen to Verdi’s, even though I’ve known most of his operas by heart. I’m glad I came to my senses!
The performances were beyond first class! The soloists each had divine voices and many times were ecstatic. I did not know the piece being performed but was comfortably entertained by soloists and a fantastic chorus. The orchestra complemented the whole, giving clarity, and pure individual artistry, all drawn together by their conductor, who fine tuned the piece and imbibed it with his energy, enthusiasm and commitment to every note, each word. Superlatives desert me; it was simply superb!
Such an underrated orchestra. Though, it seems they are gaining popularity since the lockdown when their RU-vid videos became widely viewed. Well merited!
This superb Chorus is one of the finest I've heard. Beautiful singing throughout, especially in the very quiet sections of the piece. Lovely. Extremely clear diction. I can see why they have the superb reputation they have. Very well-deserved and I hope that the hr-Sinfonieorchester invites them to perform more often with them. Also enjoyed the bass soloist. And I always enjoy the outstandingly superb hr-Sinfonieorchester and watching them perform, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada is excellent at working with a Chorus (there are some conductors who are not). Enjoyed seeing the Cimbassina(?) at the end of the brass section. Danke.
I agree about the choir, but I feel the mikeing of the choir could have been better in the pianissimo portions. I have sung this as a member of the choir under the baton of Seiji Ozawa and believe me it was a peak experience, and this performance is the closest I've come since.
Absolutely wonderful. Loved the soloists, whose voices were so beautifully balanced between squillo and volume; conducting is just superb and the orchestra great in following. The choir amazing. BIG KUDOS to the sound engineers and camera production. This is becoming my favorite version although there are some fantastic versions in RU-vid. Here’s the epitome of masterful esa of the GREAT Giuseppe Verdi. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!! ❤❤❤
Many Thanks, John Stanbury! I rarely go a day without listening to the absolute Sublime Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Andres Orozco-Estrada is my Favorite, hands up/down. I will follow his career to the ends of the earth. One day, I shall hear him in person. Before I perish. FACTS. Thanks again.
1:00:00 is perhaps my favourite section of the piece, as, when i first listened to this, i was writing my first scientific essay. I was searching for the meaning of a variable central to the contents and when this part played i found it- it was a wonderful experience

Thanks youtube not to disturb this flight. Gracias youtube por no interrumpir este vuelo.
I think the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra is the greatest in the world. And the 1st chair oboe is the most handsome of all oboists--sorry I couldn't help myself. It has been wonderful to follow his career by watching these superb videos, and his different facial arrangements are always interesting. I would love an autographed photo of him. Anyone know how I might get one? This Verdi was the best ever by the way!!! And is it true that oboists have to make their own reeds?
Stunning. A great rendition of a work that I have been listening to for 70 years, live and recordings. The 1967 live performance in Montreal with Karajan conducting La Scala, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov, Price, Cosotto was unforgettable but this one comes close.
They praise the flute in this orchestra's version of Beethoven's 7th. I think I can see her here as well, and again the flute stands out in this piece, maybe there's a pattern here
thank's for adding this wonderful performance of the Verdi Requiem to your collection. I listened attentively to all of the parts, orchestral, chorus and solos. They were guided by the conductor in an excellelnt manner. I was able to hear orchestral parts rendered in a special manner that I had never heard before. S;uch detail and maestral touch is not always present. The chorus was well trained and performed spectacularly. The blending of the solo parts were also very well done. However, I think that Verdi perhaps intended that the soprano line should stand out. For me, it does not blend with the alto, tenor and bass vocal lines. However, this is an excellent recording of the Verdi Reequiem.
1:24:14 gives me goosebumps everytime. I like their unique interpretation, although I prefer the BBC proms performance with Semyon Bychov conducting and Marina Poplavskaya singing mezzo-soprano. But I absolutely love the perfect gran cassa hit at the end of this fortissimo part. Great performance!
I believe that, if Verdi could, by some miracle, see and hear this, would be ecstatic! The orchestra is getting better everiday and is certainly one of the best of the best. Estrada is a miracle conductor. One almost does'nt need a score to "read" the music. He "is" the music pouring out of his whole body, his face, his intensity. I know that some people prefer the "robotic" type of conductor, standing uprigth in "attention", stern face, baton barely moving....but, well, it's a free world (some say). The Libera Me is superb, almost made me cry and Erika Grimaldi, that didn't start very well (still "cold" perhaps)was a real star! But all the other singers were very well with, naturally, a special mention to the well known Urmana. A Requiem to cherish. They don't come much better.
