Verdi - "Salce, salce" and "Ave Maria" from "Otello" (Montserrat Caballé) 

I remember hearing this live on PBS and thinking “can this be a 59 year old soprano”? I heard her in 1970-1975, her prime. Those who were in the Glyndebourne theater that night (this was the opening of the newly renovated theater) got to hear Caballé as she sounded in her prime-steady, effortless, shimmering, gorgeous tones pouring from her in long, perfectly controlled phrases that defied description. What a great artist. Not only her singing and musicality are exemplary. Her stage deportment here is phenomenal. This is the work of a prima donna assoluta for sure. Future generations, thankfully, will no longer need to depend only on the written word when researching great performances by great singers. They have the historic videos. Thank goodness this was filmed . Imagine this transcendental, once-in-a-lifetime performance being lost for all time. That would have been a tragedy beyond description.

And Verdi has smiled, again. Another sublime, divine moment with lovely Montserrat Caballe. I had an MRI, recently, that two very young technicians assisted me. After all prep, they asked what music I would like to listen (spotif) while in my procedure. I humored them that perhaps you could pull up MONTSERRAT CABALLE? I had to spell her name and EXPLAIN who she was. While I listened to Caballe for 30 minutes, I learned after, they were listening, too, and were impressed she was "hit" 50,000,000 times on spotify. I said, "I am not surprised, MONTSERRAT CABALLE is very missed, as she was the last of the great DIVAS of the 20th century." Their stillness told me that they heard someone they had never heard the likes of another in their lives. I was touched as my first time I ever heard her sing. Thank you! 🌹💖

Love the Diva moment she gave at 12:14 ... raising her arms and the ways she put it together with such emotion... she was way more than beautiful singing , she knew how to create great opera moments.. with art and finesse .

We love the fragility of Motserrat Caballe's voice, her Ave Maria with domain of the high notes without much transmission to the low register is the best interpretation of that aria, but Salce lacks the body of singing (the low notes are present and play very important rol in the development of the feelings of the protagonist of the opera)
