Part 2 of this Game Boy series. Here I address the vertical line issue which plagues so many original Game Boys. This repair is very easy, you just need a triwing screwdriver to open it up, and a soldering iron.

I'm aiming for one a week consistently. If i can get more in around the holidays, I will, but it's challenging right now as I can't get as many broken systems with the Canada/US border closed.

My Gameboy would display almost nothing, maybe 5 little lines. This worked like a charm. Used my crappy soldering iron that I use for plastic, low at around 400f. Applied pressure and slowly dragged it across the ribbon like a loading bar and all of the black came back gradually. It was a pretty extreme case too. And when I took the rubber pad off, it took the adhesive off with it. That's lucky :)

Great video!! I actually used my hot air rework station at 600 degrees, moving back and forth quickly from one side to the other. I quickly put the rubber strip back in place after removing the heat and held down pressure on it for 10-15 seconds. It worked amazingly well!!

The screen from the GBP got black after I cleaned it a little bit... Turns out there was a contrast wheel on the right side and that was the culprit LOL The same thing happened when I got my hands on a Wonderswan for the first time, I had no idea that they had these Contrast Wheels

I bought one of these yesterday from a guy on gumtree. It had horrible lines. Couldn’t see the selector for Pokémon in the menu in Pokémon Red. I left it on a lower shelf on my bookcase and sun shined on it for a bit. Then when I turned it on about an hour ago, most of the dead pixel lines were gone!

It didn't work for me. Rubbing the soldering iron does affect the lines, but they never stay, and as soon as I get a few good black lines, others disappear. I can't get any more than about half of them on the screen at once.

what temperature did you put your iron at to let it melt solder but not the cable?
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 3 года назад
I had it at 500f, you can go even lower which may take longer, but will be safer. Higher temps need to ensure you're always moving as to not burn the ribbon connector. I'm not sure how much heat it can handle, but there's no real reason to go much higher

i always worry about battery leaks for health reasons because of my OCD. i'd like to know your opinion on it.
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 3 года назад
I don't imagine here's much of a health concern. If you do encounter a leak and you're worried about it, you can always wear gloves or just make sure you're washing your hands well if you touch it. Obviously you don't want it in your eyes, but I don't imagine you'll absorb much though your fingers which is usually pretty thick skin with a small leak like this.

Anyone have a recommended temp to do this at?
@madman216fpv
@madman216fpv 9 месяцев назад
Ok, so 99 percent of the time if this DOES NOT work, there is some kind of corrosion that can happen to the traces that the brown strip connects to just underneath the bottom glass edge. Also if any of the traces are ripped underneath the portion that solders onto the board at the opposite end of this ribbon, your pixel lines will not come back. Be sure to take a good look and see if the parts gameboy you buy off of ebay doesn't have rub marks on that ribbon, as it may have been tampered with already, or else you might as well yank the screen out and replace it with an IPS one.

What is that black material you are hitting with the iron? Do you think hot air might work as well?
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 3 года назад
I've never tried. My concern with hot air is that it isn't very accurate so you may actually make it worse
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 3 года назад
And you risk damaging the actual screen

@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 3 года назад
Similar process, except it's much more difficult to access. The ribbon is tucked behind the display so i assume the vertical ribbon needs to be desoldered to access it
@mint_kyuu99
@mint_kyuu99 3 года назад
@@RetroRepairs iirc there were some screws on the ribbon cable in the front of the screen, if you remove them you should access the ribbon cable on the back of the display without desoldering
@pentiummmx2294
@pentiummmx2294 3 года назад
i have heard that the screen is toast if you have horizontal lines, you're better off just getting a new dmg, or modding it with a IPS screen.
