This was filmed on her birthday. Apparently she was very sweet and well behaved as a child. She also confessed to having a huge crush on Charlie (Peter Ostrum) during filming
Fun Fact: The girl that played Veruca Salt had her birthday shortly after shooting this scene and she was given one 12 inch golden egg as a birthday present which then, many years later, sold at auction for thousands of dollars.
Fun Fact: Your Wrong This scene was filmed on her 13th Birthday. Producers have her a golden egg and she still has it to this day. It wasnt filmed before her birthday and she didnt sell the egg. Learn your facts before making yourself look like an idiot
@@ryansmith2149 Just curious if she still has it then how come it ended up on pawn stars? Not trying to start an argument just wanted your take on this. Thanks
ColwellNC1309 You do realise that practically every item on that show is a fake? She still has this egg to this day she has said it herself in an interview
Just like my brother. He wants an elephant for a pet when at 23 he should know that's illegal to have a largest land animal for a pet. He even made fun of my $40 donation to the National Zoo!
Oh wow! They also said it in my video too! Unless... WE WERE WATCHING THE SAME VIDEO! Wow, what a shocker, who could have guessed!? The sheer, dumb luck of a chance.
The ironic thing is that Julie Dawn Cole grew up in poverty and did not know who her father was (according to interviews). She had a blast playing this character!
In my opinion, this song is the reason why the word "no" exists. Also, it's pretty sad that there are actually some parents out there that spoil and pamper their kids like this.
So glad my parents weren’t. Especially about candy. I was a little shit but that’s normal for a kid with their brains are still developing. Grew out of it.
*Well, they're supposed to do that. FEELINGS COME FIRST, EVERY TIME, ALL THE TIME. YOU SAY NO TO THEM, AND THEIR FEELINGS ARE HURT. DUH. And those parents who do spoil and coddle and pamper their kids are GOOD parents; because they know how their children FEEL. EMOTIONS FIRST.*
This actress literally delivered some of the best work of an actress I have ever seen. She stole the scene in every part she was given, definitely the most memorable character for me. I used to do this whole number with my sister when we were little (with our stuffed animals as the Oompa Loompas) great times
@@danimorrison4293 Let's just say Charlie's actor was more book accurate to his character. In case you don't know what I mean, much of the original moral in Dahl's book was that Charlie simply did nothing to cause himself or Grandpa Joe trouble and just left the other kids to their own devices. Winning by indifference and distraction at the wonders the factory had to offer. While Charlie in this did not do that, Charlie's actor was wise enough to keep out of it between the two. Meaning even if neither one didn't win them over, he won by being smart about it.
That's always how you should react to children's attention-seeking histrionics. Always remember that YOU are the example that they must follow. When children realise that they're going to be just fine by adopting adult behaviour, the nonsense ends - and you've got a lovely young, intelligent, human being to nurture.
@@Goodiesfanfulor maybe he was trying to still remain polite and be the example of a calm and reasonable person, even though he was getting increasingly angry, and his anger happened to explode when Charlie happened to have been the only person left. Things like that can boil over time. And knowing how good Wonka is and how humans are, especially after a good night sleep to clear the head, I believe that even if he did dismiss Charlie and they left the factory…as long as Charlie did not partake in Grandpa Joe’s advice of revenge, Wonka would have reached out a few days later to Charlie’s family and said “I’m sorry for yelling, the drinks were not too serious of an infraction - I fly all the time with them to test them - you can come to the factory and meet with me to discuss ownership”, or he would have reached out and said, “Charlie, I’m sorry for yelling. I shouldn’t have reacted like I did. But those kids were more than I bargained for and I am too old to act as both a tour guide and a third parent of 4 nasty naughty children. Sadly, I can’t give you the chocolate because of the fizzy lifting drink incident, but the fact that you handled it gracefully and survived my tour shows that you have great things ahead of you. Thanks for partaking in my factory and I wish you and your family well.” I think Wonka only exploded because of everything that built up that day and the fact that he didn’t feel appreciated by the 4 kids nor their parents and Charlie just happened to have been there in the moment where he let loose.
Veruca is the only child in the movie who gets her own musical number. The actress was so talented that she upstaged everyone else. She's the most memorable character in this movie
This was the best scene in the whole movie for me. Veruca also looked so much like how my mom did in the 60s and early 70s as a child. I always thought that was really cool.
I am always impressed by the single cut that starts at 1:38. The yellow saran wrap twirls around Wonka improbably, Veruca destroys half the set, and knocks down that tower of boxes onto the oompa loompas perfectly. Veruca even does an extra little spin on the cart before shoving it. Very impressive.
This scene was, I think, incredibly well-acted. The whole thing is over-the-top without being fake; she's not actually making demands about parties and the like, just asserting that her word is law. Well-choreographed.
Her transition from mad to sweet at 1:16 is what won her the role in the audition. The producers were impressed at how quickly she could swing into different moods to get what she wants :)
@@bridgetsylvesterprice7379 ha ha ha mom is on the floor sobbing as the 7 year old daughter beats her and sends her to her room! That is one parenting strategy....
Yeah, I've done community musical theater and I am all about noticing when the actor rehearsed her blocking ahead of time. I'm guessing she didn't require too many takes. Those are relatively long takes, too.
Part of her little nice girl bipolar persona, as she skips and fake-smiles -- right after being totally frenzied with greed and anger -- so funny, and such a good interpretation from a 13-year-old on her birthday. Love this performance.
I love Willy Wonka's reaction in the background. He's probably thinking. 'Maybe I can make her disappear, and make it look like an accident'. I loved all the actors and actresses in this movie. A true classic.
Gooses, geeses I want my geese to lay gold eggs for easter At least a hundred a day And by the way I want a feast I want a bean feast Cream buns and doughnuts And fruitcake with no nuts So good you could go nuts No, now I want a ball I want a party Pink macaroons And a million balloons And performing baboons and Give it to me now I want the world I want the whole world I want to lock it All up in my pocket It's my bar of chocolate Give it to me now I want today I want tomorrow I want to wear 'em Like braids in my hair and I don't want to share 'em I want a party with roomfuls of laughter Ten thousand tons of ice cream And if I don't get the things I am after I'm going to scream I want the works I want the whole works Presents and prizes And sweets and surprises Of all shapes and sizes And now Don't care how, I want it now Don't care how, I want it now
I'm blown away by the scene at 1:40. The way she punches the basket and kicks the boxes in time with the music, then does the shopping cart spin and nails the roll is fucking baller.
Now Erin O'Toole and Canada's Conservative Party has ruined her forever as a result of doctoring that classic to use it as an attack against Justin Trudeau and the Liberals.
Have you noticed that everyone who likes the remake is like 12 years old? Like I know they grew up with the movie, but I didn't grow up with either one, and I have to say the original (Gene Wilder movie) is WAY better than the remake.
Actually, she had a pretty successful acting career. Far better than all the other children in this movie. Heck the "actor" that played Charlie didn't even do any other movies.
I wonder if the child actress who played Veruca had fun singing this song during both rehearsal and takes. Oh, what am I thinking? Of course, she must have! Singing for the cameras as every little girl's dream.
The commentary says it was her singing (pre-recorded of course)? That makes me happy. As an actor she didn't seem that great to me. But as an actor and a singer she is superb. And on reflection, the whole thing is a morality play anyway, a kind of anarchic heightened realism, so the acting is kind of perfect as well. There is no uncanny valley to fall into, as with the remake.
I love Mike TV, hands on his knees, watching this meltdown like it’s another great program. The way he jumps back when the cart she pushes topples over the stacks of boxes is so funny to me, it’s such a nice background thing.
Julie Dawn Cole, the girl who played Veruca Salt, went on to a long, successful acting and singing career in the UK. Her talent was apparent even in this movie, as she is the only child who was given a singing solo.
LOL. I love how Charlie didn’t pay no mind to this spoiled brat. Even when I saw this as a child, I knew Veruca was a bad egg. 9/10 times bad eggs typically produce bad eggs. And this was a beautiful example. To the furnace you go!
2:35 I can't help but notice that. When Vercua stood on the garbage chute, it took a few seconds before she finally fell down. However, the moment Mr. Salt touches it, he just IMMEDIATELY falls down.
Well, it was a large industrial type scale, I suppose it fell because it was much heavier than a golden egg, that made the difference from a good one since perhaps a heavier one could be rotten. So immediately when you step on the trapdoor it is activated to let it fall down the garbage chute. And her father, with much more weight than her, would immediately take ownership.
I always thought having her want a Golden Goose was a way to make this not just about spoiled children but also make something adults would crave, people don’t talk enough about how this movie manages to combine the morals of Dahl’s book with clever critique of society that was relevant then and now. Also, I find it interesting that Wonka barely moves or reacts throughout this scene. Almost like he anticipated it happening. Its like this the whole movie its like he’s the director placed inside his own movie.
Gooses! Geeses! I want my geese to lay gold eggs for easter. (It will sweet heart.) A hundred a day! (Anything you say!) By the way.... (What?) I want a feast. (You ate before you came to the factory.) I want a bean feast. (Huh. Onna those.) Cream buns and donuts and fruit cake with no nuts so good you could go nuts- (You can have all those things when you get home.) No now! I want a ball! I want a party. Pink macaroons and a million balloons and performing bafoons and- give it to me! (Give it to he- oo) Now! I want the world. I want the whole world! I want to lock it all up in my pocket! It's my bar of chocolate! Give it to me now! I want today. I want tomorrow! I want to wear all my braids in my hair and I don't want to share em'! I want a party with roomfuls of laughter. Ten thousand tons of ice cream. And if I don't get things I am after, I'm going to scream! I want the works. I want the whole works! Presents and prizes and sweets and surprises of all shapes and sizes and now! Don't care how- I want it now! Don't care how I want it- noooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww......
@@ataane2615 It's ok! She rolled her R's like that just for vocal effect and to make her sound more sophisticated in a way. But it's not a British thing. I hope that makes sense!
She own it. Love the energy and focus. What a wonderful and iconic performance... From the days when we just made movies... without thinking about sequels or building a 'universe'.
The Old Classic Veruca is so much better than the 2005 one! They really made her in to a spoiled brat rich girl!!!! And I also loved the fact how she portrayed it in her character a lot all throughout the original where as the 2005 one didn’t
Also she was more human as she was shocked of seeing her turned into a Blueberry and she deeply cared about her despite her brattiness and hatred she has against her.
When I first saw this movie, I was puzzled about the part where Rupert Salt and Wonka have a laugh. I thought that Rupert was relieved that he was finally free from Veruca’s demands and was laughing triumphantly. But then when Wonka revealed the furnace, he remembered it was his daughter and his daddy-side came back with him worriedly going after her.😂
I like how Wonka just stands there while she goes on her song-filled hissy fit. That’s how I feel when I see a child acting up at Walmart: face-palming Wonka
At 1:39, Notice how Wonka just stands there while she throws a tantrum. As he puts his hand over his mouth, shaking his head, it's as if he's thinking, "(sigh) Oh dear. What are we going to do with her?" in very calm way. Good acting by Gene Wilder.
As detestable as the character of Veruca Salt is, there’s no denying Julie Dawn Cole is fantastic in this role. Still blows me away she filmed this scene on her 13th birthday. “It’s my bar of chocolate, give it to me now” love that line specifically
She did a great job playing this role. She was my favorite as far as acting in the movie. My favorite part of this movie is that it teaches lessons. Don’t be bratty, greedy, obsessive, or love in a fantasy world. Too much of anything is bad. And 1:19 when someone calms down like that after being mad you better run. Lol
Its hard not to root for Veruca during this song. The girl knows what she wants, and she's not afraid to smack a few Oompa-Loompa's around to get it. You go girl!
Aww! That is what I call a very sweet ole father. He jumped into that thing to save his little girl & he would do anything in the work for her. In the right way that is.
Lol Thats really funny! Her clothes are going to get covered in garbage! I wish we can hear her going " My new dress! I want a new one! Give it to me! NOW"
Veruca Salt: I want it now! Me: So you want it now, you say? Veruca: Yes! I want it now. Me: If you say so... (Opens door, Pennywise the Clown steps in) Me: What? You want IT now....and here IT is.
you’d think with a dad that’s like veruca’s you’d think he’d actually start trying to re-teach his daughter. i mean, he should do something like the next time she asks for something say no and if she starts whining either look away and wait for her to get tired of throwing a fit or lock her up in a small room until she stops screaming
