We're Americans retired to Figueira da Foz last year shortly before Covid so have not had a chance to see much else of beautiful Portugal but highly recommend Figueira da Foz on the Silver Coast. Good amenities and conveniences, train to Coimbra, can get by without a car if you live in the city, and lovely big beach. We're renting for now--no bargains to be had in FdF real estate. And if anyone questions, 'do you need central heat on the Silver Coast?'--YES! Having spent last winter in an un-heated and un-insulated quaint and charming typical Portuguese home, now in an apartment with piped gas, we are so much more comfortable. Cheers!

We are staying now in an apartament without insulation or heating and it's freezing. But we bought some appliances to heat the house, we hope to get better. You must have proper insulated house and proper central heat if you want to be comfortable.

My family is from the silver coast and live near Caldas da Rainha and Foz do Arelho. I love the entire area. I live in America and have been thinking about moving there. But to be honest the weather in Lisbon and Algarve is much better. It surprised me the first time going there. It was sunny and hot every day im Lisbon. I go 40 minutes north to visit my family and it was like 10 degree farenheit colder and not as sunny. But i still love it bc thats where my roots are.

I have to visit that area, everyone says the same about Caldas da Rainha! I don’t know about Lisbon, we will be in Lisbon soon and than head to Algarve 5 days apart so we will see if in October we observe this difference in temperature. So curious now on this subject 🤣

I visited the Silver Coast, and I can really think about living there. I think if I sell my small and cheap house here in Germany I could buy quite a large villa in Portugal... I hope this stays for a while like that, because I can't sell yet. And if I buy a cheap property it needs to be closer to an airport to come to Portugal for as many holidays as possible to work at the house.

Depending on the budget. For low budgets idealista.pt and olx.pt are the ones. For medium budgets i like rightmove.co.uk and for luxury I search specific sites of the luxury realtors that deal only in the area I am interested in😊

Foarte interesant, nu stiu de ce dar am banuit de unde sunteti. Ma aflu in UK de mai multi ani si de multe ori duc lipsa soarelui nu neaparat a caldurii, 17 grade aici sunt ca 25 acasa la noi. Sunt pensionar si tot invart globul uitandu-ma la diferite locatii: Bulgaria, Spania, Cipru, Grecia, Tailanda, Filipine, chiar si Africa, ....deci as fi vrut o casa unde sa locuim pentru mai multe luni pe an si sotia mai are cativa ani pana la pensie daca nu mai schimba astia ceva sa sfarsim la locul de munca! The people who are buying in this bracket are not going to spoil the balance you have in these places. And the people who indeed spoil the balance are not going to think to lead this sort of life. So in theory you have a point but in practice I guess it's not applicable. The problem from my point of view is not in these areas but in Lisbon, Porto, Algarve and in general in the big cities, areas. And another point it will be that you cannot stop the progress. Me, I understand the point you are making and every time I find something very secluded like a beach or a nice place I do not film it. But something that is already on the internet like these ads, I don't see the harm.

Depending on what you are looking for, there’s many different options. This is the first thing you need to consider. If you want a rural area and with snow you will look for cities near Serra da estrela, if it’s more of a Night life and university closer to Coimbra. Industrial closer to Aveiro or Leiria. Beaches you have from Aveiro to Lisbon. Then you have in the meddle the historical, the ecological and so on.

Atlantic Ocean is much rough than Mediterranean Sea. Silver coast is good for surfing while algarve coast beach is much enjoyable to walk on.

Mr. Jun, Portugal is all bath by the atlantic ocean. The big difference is that, Algarve has sea currents and wind that comes from the north of Africa, making the temperature of the water and air more warmer, than the rest of the country.

How much rainfall does Potugal get and does Potugal get monsoon rains in the summer months in Potugal and drought In summer .? The reason I ask is becsuse i am thinking about rain barrel water instead of city water . But of course if there is drought in winter months water will be difficult to supply Of course Solar energy should not be an issue , as the sun shines a lot of days in Potugal . I am living in Brasil In summer there are monsoon rains , the rain begins around 4pm and there is much flooding The winter is the dry time . The other day the temp was + 4 coldest day of the yr so far . The houses look simular to portugal . It does not sound like a rain barrel water system would be adequate . Thanks for the info . DML

In my opinion it’s very hard to construct something from zero by yourself in Portugal. The permits, birocracy and finding the right people to work with are just a few problems. But depens on your disponibility for this project.

Hello ! The buyers must be prepared to have a lawyer ( or similar) to get all documents . Sometimes The owners are died. Then you have 4 sons (ex) ...No easy. That´s a great work. If this was a bargain, it was not waing for you...so long time. In addition , you nedd licences to re-building . And , at least 150 000 euros . But at these areas the population is emigrated to France and Suisse. You hve not workers. Think-Think-Think. Carefully.

Every potential buyer should jolt down every point from you. I have seen a buyer got cheated on the size of the land. Boy, he was furious but it's his own fault for not checking it himself with the county.

Many reasons but I guess the most important is that people left those areas and left also the houses. Also many don’t have the money to take care of the houses. But this is just an oppinion, a Portuguese follower can have more insight on this. 👍
